Who will be Ohio’s Mr. Football

Also am I missing something? Is the conference Cincinatti Wyoming plays in full of world beaters? Roger Bacon? Evan Prater and Corey Kiner won it back to back respectively at those schools but they had Cincinnati offers so I'm guessing everybody was ok with it. I promise you if this kid had D1 offers at least half of yall would not be on here talking strength of schedule lmao. But I do agree he will not win it. And it'll be a mistake just like last year.

Hold on man... I just noticed Cade Stover won it at LEXINGTON and they went 6-4. So yeah it's pretty clear who SHOULD win the award but I digress
Maybe that means as long as none of these guys standing on the competition soap box get a ballot the kid may have a chance. He sure as hell deserves one.

But the consensus seems to be that if he wants to have a chance at Mr. Football he should abandon his community and shop around for the school that people take seriously and showcase his talents there. That probably would be easier than playing both ways on a team that starts 7 sophomores and 2 freshmen and managing to have some of the best stats in the nation.

You see it lol. Also I would argue the competition factor is already baked into the equation because if he had 1550 and 17 TDs (in 13 games) like last years winner he'd have no shot but like you said he has some of the best stats in the whole nation

Last year? You don’t think that Jordan Marshall was deserving last season?

Both of these guys were deserving. But what does their ranking and recruiting stars have to do with winning the award?
Exactly. I don’t understand the recruiting and offers argument at all. Sperling only had the Buffalo offer the year he won, he did get a Kentucky offer but that was after he was awarded Mr. Football, should he not have won because he only had a MAC offer?

I think we are getting a little too defensive over an award, but okay.

I'm not trying to disrespect a kid or a program. I've mentioned the kid is really frican good.

My only argument is that competition level should be a factor when deciding who wins. I don't think anyone in here would argue that Indian Valley has played a difficult schedule.

The award is for the best HS football player in Ohio. Their ranking and college commitment/ offers is the best proof of their ability compared to others in the state no matter what size school they play for. If not it’s just a popularity contest..

Agree that its not a popularity contest nor should school size matter. However, their rankings and school commitments dont reflect what they did for the year. What if a kid is a 5 star and has offers from several D1 programs his junior year and is a total bust his senior year. Should he win it based on his recruiting status his junior year?

It should be a combination of factors. D1 fbs recruiters make a living on determining talent and that should weigh in.

Agree with recruiters and how they make a living. But, to me, this has no bearing on a yearly award given to a player on how they did in a particular year. Im sure there are quite a few that won the award and did nothing in college.
We can agree to disagree on this.

There are to many factors that go into how a player does in a particular year. Competition they play against is largest, followed by their supporting staff. You can be the best QB in the nation, but If his receivers can’t catch the ball he will never have the stats to reflect how good they really are. I guess I need a definition of what actually constitutes Ohio”s Mr. Football. Maybe I’m wrong in thinking that it is awarded to the best player in the state? We have an Ohio player that is a 5 star with a .99+ composite QB, and to not consider this to me is crazy.

It is judged purely off high school football. College projections have nothing to do with the award

Then it’s a popularity contest. If a voter doesn’t take some consideration of experts that rank their ability, then it’s nothing more IMHO.

He was 6/8 for 235 yards and the 3 TD and also rushed for 55 yards on 7 carries and 2 TD.

Don't forget to mention the 80yd TD run he had that was called back on a hold that occurred after he had run past the defender. Not saying it wasn't a hold, only stating that he would've scored anyway. The hold was by a sophomore WR down the field.

Strong disagree on this. I know kids holding D1 offers that have barely played varsity football. The younger brother of the Hoban RB held D1 offers before playing in a single game.

D1 offers are, for the most part, based on pure projections and have little to do with performance on the high school field performance.

IMO, offers should have ZERO to do with who is named Mr. Football.

There composite should.

This would happen because the coach leaves him in, while the WJ coach pulls his starters early.
The coach actually doesn’t leave him in, there’s only 3 games that he played in all 4 quarters. But maybe in this made up scenario of a game he was left in, hard to tell

Again, here is the list of players that have been mentioned in this thread. Any others that should be added to the watchlist?

Keller Moten, QB - Walsh Jesuit
Matt Ponatoski, QB - Moeller
Bo Jackson - VASJ
Grady Kinsey, RB - Indian Valley
Trenton Barraza - Columbus Grove
Preston Bowman, WR - Pickerington North
Trent Wolpert, WR - Upper Arlington
Jake Uhlenhake, WR - Watterson
Shaun Terry, WR - Ironton
Devonte Taylor - Ursuline
Brayden DeVito, QB - Shelby
DC Ferrell - Ursuline
Nathan Bernard - Ashland
Nolan Good - Avon
Ja'Niaus Hall, QB - Lima Senior
Casey Myser - Highland
Chris Maloney - Benedictine
Marquise Davis - Cleveland Heights

Also, for any of the players mentioned above, please post websites that have the players stats for this season.

Gimme the dude from G-hutten indian valley...crazy production both ways...throw the eastern part of the state a bone.I will take him next year too.

I am completely conflicted after reviewing maxpreps, watching Hudl, clips on X and any other media I could get my eyes on to see this kid. All things considered, he definitely deserves consideration as he appears very quick and intuitive out of the gate. The conflict comes from the fact that his team’s SoS is #67 in D4 and 7 of 10 of the teams they have played are D5/D6. If he would like to compete for and win Mr. Football next season, the coach should try and schedule better teams in higher divisions, not lower, especially if that’s the feedback that keeps him from winning.

Guys - you can't trust anything on MaxPreps that has to do with scores or statistics. They rely on dads and fans putting info in. I'm not saying these stats are wrong, but I would say use a more trusted source. I've see 150-0 scores on that site before.

He was deserving, but Davis should have won it IMHO.
Agree. Davis should have won it last year. But not this year.

The stats match up with media coverage and video streams of games but yeah I’m sure his dad is behind that too

The kid from Lima Senior that I mentioned before threw for 562 yds and 10 TD in Week 8..........in the first half. They were up 79-0 at halftime.

Now has 3740 yds and 49 TD on the season. Up to 467.5 yds per game.

Competition they play is terrible, but the team is #10 in the state in D2.
