The Official 2023 Cincinnati Reds Thread

Just need to pass two of the three, so hopefully the Suzuki misplay snowballs on the Cubs, and the pitching injuries filet the Fish. Just keep winning Reds - it can happen.

BTW - Friedl is just amazing. 1.229 OPS in September - tops in entire MLB. He was platooning in LF/RF at the start of the season and now he has 100% earned the everyday CF job. Not even Bell can sit him now.

Also - Luke Maile - wow was I wrong about him.

FInally - nice to see Elly break out last night. As Welsh said, he has to feel like the weight of the world is off his shoulders.
Outside of Spencer Steer, Friedl has been the Reds MVP this year. I'd still take Steer due to his full season body of work and his ability to play so many positions.
Elly's first homer was on a 79 mph changeup, maybe not a big deal but I think it shows some maturity from him. 2 strikes and he took a pitch in the dirt previously, a pitch he's struck out on alot. Look it's going to be a process with him. So many were getting down on him already. He's a long lanky guy so I do think you will see him go in and out of slumps. His plate discipline has been better, but what a talent. Did you see the single by Maile to put the Reds up for good? Elly was on 2nd, that was a bullett to the left fielder, who wasn't playing deep, a two hopper and Elly beat the throw home. Even a great throw doesn't get him. It's insane his physical tools. I do feel going into 2024, he needs to be near the top of the batting order. You want him with as many at bats as possible.

Weekend probably pitchers are listed.... Phillips, Williamson and Greene to finish the regular season.

I've said for years Francona is the best manager in baseball. The Indians/ Guardians had no business winning as much as they have the last few years. He does a great job managing young players and getting the most out of them.

How do football fans do it? Only 1 game a week? I have a hard time listening to talk shows that focus so much on football because it's celebrate/ bash for 3 days then preview/ predict for 3 days before the game is played. That's just way too much airtime to fill.

I simply watch and enjoy the football games. I have no need for 6 days of chatter on TV/radio. Just tune it out.

I’m sick of the Indians owning Cincinnati. Reds need to take the games against them more serious. It really does seem like Cleveland takes this rivalry much more serious.
Curious as to why you think the Reds do not take the games seriously? What have you seen/not seen to come to that illogical conclusion? The Reds need these two games far worse the Cleveland. I saw plenty of energy and excitement from the Reds dugout last night. What are you basing your comment on?

Should the Reds be mental cases like you and say "I f---ing hate them"? This is baseball. Getting all fired up and emotional about it does not help you win.

The Indians just appear to play with more fire than the Reds when they play each other. I’ve heard Indians players in the past comment on wanting to keep the Ohio cup in Cleveland on STO. I’ve never heard a Red say such a thing.

I don't know that I'd agree with this. But I do feel the Guardians have a better sense of who they are and overall play a brand of baseball that's more old school, move runners, hit behind the runners. Now the Reds have come miles and miles from where they used to be. I think a big sign of that was last night when catcher Luke Maile stole second base. YES, a CATCHER stole second! Nothing is more frustrating to me than seeing runners just anchor to a base, pitcher not even paying attention to the runners and no one runs. And we did that for YEARS. Now some of you will say the Reds were really slow before and of course analytics say don't steal. Of course this is hogwash because winning teams have a running component, always have.
I LOVE that the Reds have finally embraced running baseball. Yes, you get some guys thrown out, but I'd guess if we go back over the entire year, those places where it was questionable to send a runner has worked out more in our favor than not. Case in point, last night, Elly singled up the middle and Votto of all people went first to third. A good throw would had got him, but the throw was up the line and Elly goes to 2nd. Maile knocks both in.
I've not questioned the Reds EFFORT all season. This team has played hard and played with as much baseball intensity as you can ask for in a 162 game season.

I'm sorry, but Who Cares about the Ohio cup??? This is a fabricated thing for Ohio to drum up interest in the games. They count no more or less than any other games we play.

When you grow up in Northeast Ohio as a Reds fan dealing with that cult fan base you would have a much better understanding.

Unfortunately with the Guardians/ they stripped away alot of their fan base going woke. I remember in the 90's the Indians were one of the hottest franchises in baseball. Consecutive sell outs, young stars. It seems like when the team lost to the Cubs in the world series, followed up by changing the nickname, ALOT of people left that franchise. They've actually been in contention the last few years, made playoffs and they still struggle to draw anymore. Maybe Phil Castelini should had gone there and said "what else you gonna do?" Apparently Indians fans did find other things.

So it came out yesterday that Matt McLain re-aggravated his oblique and is done for the season. Swell. I guess it's going to be good to have all this young talent in the infield because like pitchers today, we'll probably need 6-7 infielders to get through seasons anymore.
Pretty much last nights lineup, except Fraley in for Votto.

This post has “Major League Baseball as told by FOX News” written all over it.

Good luck finding anyone outside of a few Yappi Debate Forum lunatics who abandoned the Guardians because they’re no longer called the Indians.

Finally, Bell goes with the “don’t fix it if it ain’t broke” approach.

I turn on my TVs Saturday morning and then watch games all and night. Then I do the same thing Sunday at 1 pm through the rest of the night. Then I watch MNF. Then I watch TNF. Then I watch any good college games Friday night.

That seems like more than one game a week. And no need to listen to any of the pointless talking-head shows. Most football fans don’t pay attention to that nonsense.

What's the tag line, go woke, go broke. The Indians sold their soul to the MLB devil, crippling their fanbase. I've run into alot of fans who still call them the Indians and always will even young people. You call it Fox News, I call it reality. The Redskins in Washington are the same way.

You must watch a different league, my team only plays once a week? :ROFLMAO:

But seriously, you can watch two teams you don't give a rip about?

No, their fan base got stripped away when the Browns came back and they started to not have as great of teams as they did in the mid 90s. They are a total bandwagon/cultish fan base.

Did the Browns come back or is it just the popularity of fantasy football and gambling?

Absolutely, yes. I care about the whole NFL. Just like millions of other fans. The 4:25 Sunday window routinely draws around 24 to 25 million viewers. SNF is around 16 to 18 million usually. Most of those viewers aren’t fans of the specific teams playing in that slot.

The Guardians drew 1.8 million fans in 2023, surpassing Indians’ attendance of 2021, 2019, 2016, 2015, 2014, 2013, 2012, 2010, 2009 and 2003.

But sure, the name change after 2021 crippled the franchise and killed off the fanbase.

Reds should have probably shut Abbott down a few weeks ago, I realize they had nobody else but the young man is obviously out of gas
