The Official 2023 Cincinnati Reds Thread

Have you researched the trades that were made at the deadline? The pitchers involved in these trades didn’t exactly set the world on fire. Maybe teams were asking too much, who would you be willing to give up? It’s easy for us to second guess. You’re right about the off season, this will be the time to strengthen the pitching staff and bench for a right handed OF and a good defensive catcher
A history of making trades with no impact doesn’t mean to stop looking to strengthen a team that is in the midst of a playoff hunt and winning.

The trades for Verlander and Scherzer weren’t exactly earth shattering. The Rangers gave up their 3rd highest ranked prospect in a 1 to 1 trade for Scherzer. The Astros gave up their 1 or 4th ranked prospect depending on the source you use and an outfielder drafted in the 11th round. Not saying the Reds should have traded for Verlander or Scherzer, but they were probably the most expensive trades made as far as pitching.

With the flexibility of adding India to any deal, the Reds could have matched that value though.

The bigger concern is the attitude of the front office. Winning just doesn’t seem that important. The iron was hot and the team was contending. There’s absolutely no guarantee this team is contending by mid July next season.

If this is your mindset, prepare to be disappointed. I don't see this front office making many significant changes in the off season. The semi-regular lineup looks pretty set to me.

1b - CES
2b - McLain
SS - Elly
3B - Marte
CF - Friedl
C - Stephenson
LF - Steer

My guess is you bring Benson back next season and play him in right most of the time or platoon. I think Senzel and India are gone.
I'd try to bring Maile back to catch, or possibly go and get a starting catcher. Like Stephenson, but his defense is getting worse and he doesn't hit enough to justify being a starting catcher.

Starting pitching - Greene, Lodolo, Ashcraft, Williamson and Abbott all have spots for me. Phillips waiting in the wings.

Bullpen- take your pick, alot probably is going to be determined by their contract status.

I'm fine rolling into 24 with this group.
See my above post. Winning isn’t important and it’s certainly rubbing off on some fans…

You have zero idea if they tried to make any trades and what those trades would’ve cost. The Reds are committed to building a team with mostly home grown players and a few shrewd trades. Did you give the Reds any credit for the trades from last year?

Uh, you had zero idea as well, so that’s just a useless argument. I told you what those players cost other teams. It’s very reasonable to assume the same price would have applied to the Reds. I mentioned Verlander and Scherzer because those were the highest asking prices outside of Ohtani, which was never a realistic trade. Are you privy to secret knowledge that teams were overcharging the Reds and no one else?

Of course I did and thought they should’ve happened sooner. Feel free to go back and read my posts about the Reds needing to embrace rebuild mode and trade off veteran assets for prospects.

Where did I ever say I was privy? Y’all seem to have all the answers when you really don’t 😂

We don’t? Seems we know exactly what top tier pitching costed at the deadline because we know what other teams paid for it.

What part don’t you understand?

Well, here we go, the final week of the 2023 season. I'm going to be sad that it's over, regardless of a playoff spot. All the Reds have committed to as of today is Hunter Greene today, Andrew Abbott tomorrow. My guess is if they are mathematically eliminated, you will not see any of the normal starters in the Cardinal series. Greene could legitimately come back on Sunday if necessary. Supposedly Matt McLain will return today, probably too little too late. You wonder if after India hobbled through Sunday's game that he may just be replaced by McLain for the rest of '23.

All the Reds can do this week is win today, then hope the field comes back to them. Cubs are in Atlanta this week, Marlins are in NY for the Mets. Arizona is in Chicago for the White Sox.

This isn’t exactly Reds related, but did anyone catch the apparent rift over Josh Hader apparently refusing to make himself available for more than 3 outs in a do-or-die game last night? Especially watch the video in the second tweet, as a clearly exasperated Bob Melvin tries to calmly deflect media questions without saying what he really wants to say.

It could be that Hader doesn’t want to be overused ahead of his free-agent payday this winter. But that’s not exactly a ringing endorsement for him.

As for Bob Melvin, it’s been reported that he’s on the outs with the Padres front office. He’d be a sight for sore eyes as the 2024 Reds manager, but it’ll never happen.

Awkward. Agreed - if I am a GM considering Hader, that hurts his evaluation. Not a team guy.

Yep - it has been fun. But mathematical elimination won't happen if the Reds win tonight. Just keep plugging away.

If Reds go 4-1 somehow, that's 84 wins. We would need two of these things to happen:
- Arizona goes 2-4 to get to 84 wins. Reds have tiebreaker.
- Cubs go 2-4 to get to 84 wins. Reds have tiebreaker.
- Marlins go 2-4 to get to 83 wins. Marlins have tiebreaker.

It is a long shot at best. Cubs have hardest schedule by far, Braves and Brewers. I could see them going 2-4.

Wouldn’t it be something if my hapless White Sox rise up and sweep the D-Backs on the South Side? If that happens, Arizona is in trouble with Houston invading the desert this weekend to try to either win the West or more likely preserve a final wildcard spot. Root for Seattle to take a couple games from Houston the next couple days to keep Houston’s playoff fate in doubt ahead of the weekend.

The D-Backs-Sox series was supposed to be last night through Wednesday, but Monday’s game was moved to Thursday afternoon to accommodate the weather altering the D-Backs-Yankees series. The Sox have made tickets $1 for Thursday, with free parking, as a thank you/apology/please show up to this unscheduled time to the fanbase. It’ll probably still be empty.

When local Cincinnati news is starting to question EDLC then my opinions are the farthest thing from emotional or knee jerk. I've also been much more correct about this team and what they actually are vs any of the BS you've spewed over the past 3 months. Really not sure what Matt Mclain has anything to do with this though. Trying to make your golden boy look better I guess?

Cincinnati News are news reporters they report what they see, they are not devoted to in-depth sports reporting however, MLB is a 24-7 365 days a year in-depth baseball reporting. When they say things most of the time they are usually right, not all the time but mostly and most of their analysts are retired major leaguers and coaches they know what they see and know what their talking about. Not subjective news reporters.

So you like to put words in peoples mouth then argue or make fun of yourself.

That and your weird Stockholm Syndrome with Reds ownership just makes you kind of weird.
Aren’t we all? 😂 what words did I put in your mouth? You’re the one whining about what the Reds should have done. As far as Reds management, they deserve criticism for the past for sure but not right now. The Reds are one of the youngest, most talented teams in the league. Enjoy the ride dipshyte

Agreed, I care what baseball experts think. Not reporters looking for eyeballs and clicks. They will call him Elly De La Bench one day, and Elly De La God the next, if they think it will get them views. Then write an article about Biden or Trump the next day. They are uninformed clowns, and they are pandering to attract dummies, like our friend Spartacus.

Cubs lose!

Phillies have clinched a wildcard. Brewers have won the NL Central.

Braves’ magic number over the Dodgers is 1 to clinch NL home-field advantage, and their magic number over the Orioles is 2 to clinch World Series home field.

Tonight is going to be a tough one with Abbott facing Shane Bieber. It’s Abbott’s last start of the season, so hopefully he can reach back and find something one last time.

Thankfully the bullpen was pitch efficient last night after Greene’s short outing, so the bullpen isn’t decimated. With the off day Thursday, it’s all hands on deck.

Aside from the predictable White Sox crapfest against Arizona, it was a good night:

1. The Cubs choked away a 6-0 lead and lost 7-6 to the Braves, with Seiza Suzuki’s missed fly ball in the 8th evoking memories of the infamous Brant Brown drop nearly 25 years ago to the day (9/23/98):

2. The Marlins were postponed due to unplayable field conditions at Citi Field, angering Marlins execs. Apparently the Mets forgot or failed to cover the infield during the main Ophelia rain barrage over the weekend. Oops! This pushes Braxton Garrett back to tomorrow, meaning he either pitches on three days’ rest Sunday or the Marlins have to find someone else. Sandy Alcantara and Eury Perez are both unavailable with injuries.

3. The Mariners beat the Astros, climbing to within a half game of them for the last wildcard spot. With only one more game in that series, it ensures Houston will head into Arizona Friday night battling for its playoff life.

Just need to pass two of the three, so hopefully the Suzuki misplay snowballs on the Cubs, and the pitching injuries filet the Fish. Just keep winning Reds - it can happen.

BTW - Friedl is just amazing. 1.229 OPS in September - tops in entire MLB. He was platooning in LF/RF at the start of the season and now he has 100% earned the everyday CF job. Not even Bell can sit him now.

Also - Luke Maile - wow was I wrong about him.

FInally - nice to see Elly break out last night. As Welsh said, he has to feel like the weight of the world is off his shoulders.

Ooof. I'm in 5th place out of 16 in my fantasy league, just barely in the money. I drafted Bieber early and have gotten nothing out of him all year. Tonight I have to root against him. Hoping the game is 0-0 or 1-1 after 7 innings, Abbott and Bieber pitch well, and then the Reds pound the bullpen late to win. But if the Reds pound Bieber, I can live with that.

Aboot needs to be on a very short leash tonight. The hook for any pitcher getting into trouble needs to come out before runs cross the plate. Hipefully the bats come out early and often against Bieber.

I just was reminded that tonight will be Terry Francona’s final home game managing the Guardians. So they might have some extra juice to not send him out with a loss.

No word on whether @brian1227 will be throwing a postgame parade.

This is Beiber's 2nd start after coming off the DL. He was roughed up by Baltimore last week, 5 IP, 6 hits, 5 runs so hopefully we're not getting the real Bieber. Really want to see Abbot have a good outing, he's been scuffling a little lately. Cubs did choke that one away and the Braves just keep hitting.
Marlins other issue is the get to finish the season with 6 games in 5 days, so the bullpen will be taxed.

Reds just need to find a way to win today.
