A history of making trades with no impact doesn’t mean to stop looking to strengthen a team that is in the midst of a playoff hunt and winning.Have you researched the trades that were made at the deadline? The pitchers involved in these trades didn’t exactly set the world on fire. Maybe teams were asking too much, who would you be willing to give up? It’s easy for us to second guess. You’re right about the off season, this will be the time to strengthen the pitching staff and bench for a right handed OF and a good defensive catcher
The trades for Verlander and Scherzer weren’t exactly earth shattering. The Rangers gave up their 3rd highest ranked prospect in a 1 to 1 trade for Scherzer. The Astros gave up their 1 or 4th ranked prospect depending on the source you use and an outfielder drafted in the 11th round. Not saying the Reds should have traded for Verlander or Scherzer, but they were probably the most expensive trades made as far as pitching.
With the flexibility of adding India to any deal, the Reds could have matched that value though.
The bigger concern is the attitude of the front office. Winning just doesn’t seem that important. The iron was hot and the team was contending. There’s absolutely no guarantee this team is contending by mid July next season.
