The Official 2023 Cincinnati Reds Thread

So that it?
Not yet, Cubs lost and Marlins are winning. Both those teams play tomorrow so worst case scenario would be Reds 2 games behind both teams with 3 to play. Reds at Cardinals, Marlins at Pirates and Cubs at Brewer all this weekend. Best case would be the Cubs and Marlins lose tomorrow and Reds would be one game back with 3 to play. Crazy

So as it stands right now the Reds are 1 1/2 games back of both the Chubs and the Marlins. Chubs have one game left with the Braves, then three with Milwaukee. Miami has one game left with the Mets, then three with Pittsburgh. Reds go to St.Louis for final three this weekend. Reds hold tiebreaker over the Chubs, Marlins hold tiebreaker over the Redlegs. If the Chubs and Marlins lose their games today, it should make for one helluva interesting weekend......

What's the tag line, go woke, go broke. The Indians sold their soul to the MLB devil, crippling their fanbase. I've run into alot of fans who still call them the Indians and always will even young people. You call it Fox News, I call it reality. The Redskins in Washington are the same way.
"crippling their fan base"???? :ROFLMAO: How? I swear you just regurgitate whatever nonsense you hear on talk radio and/or TV talk shows.

Maybe you meant "alienating their fan base"? If so, only a small percentage for the rename. Most of the fan base is alienated because their sh__ty owner is even cheaper than the Castellini's and do not even try to field a good roster. Go read the last few years of the Guardians thread you will see that I am right.

Yep, not quite dead. FWIW, Marlins also have tiebreak on Cubs, as well as the easier opponents. They are the favorite at this point.

Reds WC elimination number is listed as 3, but I really think it is 2 with the Marlins, since they have the tiebreaker. A miracle 3-0 finish for the Reds is 84 wins would mean the Marlins just need 2-2 to hold on to the final spot.

Really need both Cubs and Marlins to lose today.
Today's matchups:
- Fish have Luzardo vs. Petersen (both struggling in Sept but advantage Fish)

- Cubs have Stroman vs. Smith-Shawver (Stroman has more neck tattoos than Smith-Shawver has MLB appearances (5) - advantage Cubs. But Stroman's last six outings have all been less than 4 innings.)

If two of these happen, the Reds are eliminated:

1. Arizona wins 1 of their last 4.
2. Miami wins 2 of their last 4.
3. Cubs win 3 of their last 4.

And those numbers go down by one for any Reds loss this weekend. In other words, Miami is the team to focus on, but it’s very close to over.

Interesting in New York last night. Mets leading Marlins 1-0 after 8 innings. Marlins get 2 in top of 9th, inning still in progress, and the game was suspended for weather. The Marlins have to finish this afternoon at 1pm and then get to Pittsburgh for game tonight! Hope the Mets can pull it out. The rule:

According to Rule 7.02 (a)(5):
A suspended game shall be resumed and completed as follows:
Weather, if the game is called before it is a regulation game, or if a regulation game is called while an inning is in progress and before the inning is completed, and the visiting team has scored one or more runs to take the lead, and the home team has not retaken the lead.

That Marlins-Mets game resumes Monday if it’s still relevant in determining a playoff spot. Otherwise, it won’t be resumed.

Reds need to sweep the Cards first of all and then two of these three has to happen:
Cubs lose 2 of three to Brewers
Arizona gets swept by Astros
Marlins lose 2 of three to Pirates assuming they win the suspended game. I could see the Cubs losing 2-3 to the Brewers and Arizona has the potential to lose all 3 to the Astros who are battling the Marlins for the last wild card spot

If the Marlins win the suspended game, the Pirates would have to sweep them. They own a tiebreaker over the Reds.

While that is true were the other 73 losses after blowing leads late? Or losing when up 9-0? You don’t have to be a dyck every day
It still counts as 1 loss.

If the Reds had gone 17-10 in August instead of 10-17 blowing that 9 run lead wouldn’t matter as much.

Nah, just tired of the stupidity that fans and teams run out every year that "it's early" and "it's a long season".

Every game matters.

Would the Reds be in this position if they had brought the young guys up sooner? Maybe they win 2 or 3 more games in May or April and make the playoffs.
Nobody said they didn’t, you’re trying too hard

It’s true that the Reds bizarrely waited until after blowing key series with the Brewers in June and July to bring up both Elly De La Cruz and Christian Encarnacion-Strand. Had they been more aggressive in bringing those guys up, who knows how much of a difference there might have been.

As for this weekend, the Cardinals have a bevy of guys on the IL, including:

Willson Contreras
Nolan Gorman
Nolan Arenado
Brendan Donovan
Tyler O’Neill
Dylan Carlson
Alec Burleson

They’re down to Goldschmidt, Walker, Nootbaar, Edman, and a lot of filler and young guys. The Reds will never have a better shot at sweeping in St. Louis.

On the other hand, there’s a chance it all ends tonight. A Reds loss and a Marlins win tonight would eliminate the Reds.
