Sports Talk Radio - The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly

CBS Sports Radio and Fox Sports radio is kicking ESPN's tail now. You want a new favorite, how about Fox Sports radio's Clay Travis? He's good!

I thought he was okay at the beginning, but he has become a pompous blowhard. I want more sports talk and less social commentary. He overuses the "I was a lawyer" thing and speaks well outside of his base of knowledge. Also, his handling of the Greg Schiano thing was over the top.

Yes,an unusual track to being a sports talk show host. Must had decided being a laywer wasn't going to be much fun. Pompous blowhard?? I think to be a sports talk show host that's almost a requirement!

This is actually not a bad time for sports talk. Many times alot of the hosts take time off during the holidays and you get some refreshing replacements.

Fox has some interesting characters in their stable of "experts". Eric Dickerson, Michael Vick, TJ Houshmandedeh, Bucky Brooks??

The "bad" of sports talk ... nearly every day, we get a Dallas Cowboys, New England Patriots and LeBron updates. Good or bad. We've literally had the last 16 weeks of A. Jerry Jones B. Dak Prescott C. When's Jason Garrett getting canned Incredibly mind numbing.

Listening to Brinda .Reminded why I couldn't stand this jerk on WKNR week nights .Old, stale ,and a grumpy, arrogant pizz ant. Adam the bull$hit is another blowhard .Goldhammer and Rizzo's spawn are blowhards as well.Lima on 92 sucks bad as well.Phelps is like watching paint dry. Garret Bush who calls his show the barbershop on 92.3 on Sat. mornings seems to be the only fair and balanced guy capable of having meaningful sports talk. Doesn't belittle those who oppose him and welcomes real dialogue. Virtually nobody on either station is funny, informative or entertaining. Pat Kirwin on Sirius NFL weekdays...….Moving the chains.... is calm,no BS ,football talk.Very well done.

Major purge at iHeart nationwide yesterday.

And CBS Sports Radio tweaked their weekday lineup to add the Pat McAfee show. A few days after that, Scott Ferrall was suddenly off the air. Word is he may have said a few things about Dan Gilbert and Rocket Mortgage is a big sponsor.

I'm ok with Ferrall being gone, his act was getting stale. I'm a big CBS/ Fox sports guy now. I don't listen to ESPN anymore. Stephen A was the last decent guy left. If you can, take a listen in the mornings to Clay Travis and Outkick the Coverage, really good show. The DA Show is good, Cowherd, Doug Gotleib, Ken Carmen, Zack Gelb, just a good lineup.

What do you think of Ken Carmen?

What do you think of Ken Carmen?
I used to really enjoy him when he was on weeknights on 92.3. Mornings with Lima I can do without. When Carmen does the weekend spots on cbs radio he is easier to listen to. He has gotten more cocky and condesending and less humorous the longer he is on the radio.

Not that it's any consolation to Sam Bourquin, but WAKR flipped formats. They are keeping the morning guy and the play by play sports (Cavs, Indians, Browns, Ohio State). The rest of the time will be Adult Contemporary music.

Phelps recently said the reason the Giants hired Judge without interviewing McDanials (While the hiring process was playing out,and well before he met with the Browns for his interview) was because they OBVIOUSLY felt he was a better coach??? WTF??? Never mentioned any number of reasons like...….He could have wanted way more money/years than NY was offering, not wanting Gettleman as his GM,Not wanting to work with their roster/QB,or maybe knowing Cleve. was Josh's only destination outside of staying in NE. Im sure there were other potential reasons on both sides as well. But to say that with no knowledge is just stupid for a supposed professional talk show host. Do some due diligence or shut the eff up.Two days ago he was heaping praise on a caller for agreeing with him that kitchens should have been given another year to coach this shipwreck. WTF???? I can get stupid shyte like that from the town drunk over his 6th Budweiser.Problem is this fool has never even tasted a drop of alcohol....Fact!!!!! Maybe he should give it a try? It could'nt make him any dumber.

I only know him from his Saturday CBS gig, actually started on Sunday night 10P-2A then moved. CBS likes to move those guys around. Unfortunately for a lot of those guys, they do have a shelf life. Very few guys can stay a long time and be good.

WARF- 1350, the Akron Fox Sports station has moved to a new format and is calling itself "The Gambler" and will be focused on sports gambling. They moved Munch Bishop to the morning drive but are keeping Patrick, Cowherd and Gottleib. They spent yesterday looping the song "The Gambler." The station has also added the BetR Network’s “My Guys in the Desert” hosted by Brent Musberger. WARF will also carry BetR’s “The Green Zone” from 9pm-12am. They've also repackaged themselves as a Cleveland station.

I listened to about 30 seconds of Bishop this morning and turned it off.

Never liked Munch, Cowherd and Gottleib are good, can't stand Patrick. Didn't know Musberger was doing radio. He's got to be ancient, I'm in my 50's and he was on the air doing games as a broadcaster in the late 70's.
I really don't like the direction many states have gone in this country with legalized gambling. I think it's going to just continue to chip away at society. Don't we have enough ills for people to get into? I know I'm a little strange, but I can watch sports without betting on games. I don't care about point spreads and overs and unders. The games themselves are enough for me. And let's face it, states are not doing it because they feel it's good or safe, they are simply doing it so they can tax the money and keep it in state. Just like marijuana.

Just wait as companies like DraftKings Sportsbook gets more into states that have legal gambling. That will make it as easy as pulling up the app on your cell phone.

I'm okay with Patrick. Cowherd has become merely a soundbite attention grabber type. Gottleib is okay. I'd prefer stations to opt for Rich Eisen over Cowherd. As I recall, you're not an Eisen fan.

Fascinating discussion on Clay Travis's "Outkick the Coverage" show this morning. Travis is in Miami for the super bowl and had an experience helicopter pilot on just discussing the crash that claimed the life of Kobe Bryant and 8 others. Couple of interesting talking points about helicopters. First of all, no black boxes are required on helicopters. There is some audio history from the pilot's last conversation with the tower. Also this was a massive helicopter, two engines, capable of carrying more than the 9 that were on board. Pilots basically have the final decision on weather to fly or not. The LA police had grounded their copters that morning due to visibility, but there is no governing body that makes any final decisions on if you can fly. The last words from the pilot was that he wanted to climb, which is not unusual if you're in a situation where visibility is bad, basically he wanted to "get above" the fog.

Not and Eisen fan and I'm not sure why...I guess guys who go from SportsCenter anchors to talk show hosts isn't as easy as it seems.

I'd say Cowherd is entertainment, I can't say I agree with him all the time or even a lot, but he delivers passionately and it entertaining. My one knock on him is he's way too big time, glitz / glam guy. I still feel at the end of the day, talent wins. Cowherd jumps on the marketing side and rides certain players. If Cowherd was commissioner of pro sports, he'd eliminate about 60% of the teams and all the stars would be in big markets. Pro sports are good when most teams at least feel like they are a few years from a championship.

ESPN radio has gone in the dumper... the popular Mike & Mike has gone through 2-3 rebrandings and can't figure it out. Trey Wingo isn't a host and Golic can't carry as show, the younger Golic tries too hard. I've yet to find anyone who likes or listens to Dan Lebatard. Stephen A is all TV now and Will Cane isn't good either. Fox Sports and CBS is taking over the radio sports talk world.

Never been happier for the start of the NBA season again. Hopefully the Astros sign stealing can go to the back pages for awhile. New NFL proposed scheduled and added playoff teams should get some run too.
Seeing a sad narrative develop, and remember I said this. Patrick Mahomes is already being compared to the greats in NFL history. Anything less than 5-6 super bowl wins will be a failed career in the minds of some of these football whack job talking heads. It takes so many things and luck to accomplish things in the NFL. I just hate to see a kid with a burden of unrealistic goals put on him. He may have the best team he'll ever have at KC last season and maybe next year. Then the weight of guys wanting to get paid will take over.

ESPN cancels the TV show High Noon with Bomani Jones and Pablo Torre. I never watched that show. Now they need to take the next step and can Lebatard.

The Titans did the dirty work beating the Pats in New England and the Ratbirds in Baltimore. That made KC's path much easier to the Super Bowl. 3rd and 16 play fails they probably lose to Frisco. If Shanahan remembers to run the ball and Jimmy G see's Kittle all alone instead of overthrowing an open receiver that also would have resulted in a game winning TD than the narrative on Mahomes and Reid would be much different. I don't see the dynasty the talking heads see in KC. Coming from behind may be clutch but dynasties don't rely on that mode of operation the way KC had this past playoff season.
