Ursuline & Cardinal Mooney prospects for 2025

Good luck to Ursuline, but Lake was terrible during that time frame. That was the middle of the 7 year stint with O’Donnell. Really set the program in the wrong direction.

I would love to see Ursuline and Lake start playing again. Many great games, but nothing tops the regional final back in 1992. Tim Tyrell at QB and Trevor Stargill who ran wild on the Lake defense that night. Lake was ranked #1 in the state the entire year that season and just completely dominated all their opponents. Stargill took the first play of the third quarter 75 yards for a TD and Ursuline went up 21-0. The Lake crowd was stunned. Lake stormed back and scored 21 unanswered. The Irish got the ball back after Lake tied the game and I believe it was the very first play, but Tyrell threw a terrible pass and it was picked. Jim Novacavich kicked a 38 yard FG with about 40 seconds left to secure a Lake victory 24-21. Lake then demolished Lima Bath in the semifinal and then destroyed Ironton for the championship.

This was one of the best high school games I’ve ever witnessed.
yeah you’re right. That one was more from my prospective. The game I played against them a player had just died so they played a really hard nose game and I suppose I just associated that with a successful season, but after an easy search that is not the case. They had a pretty difficult schedule

That was an unbelievable game... Irish really blew it. Knocked jurevicius out of the game early but just made a few bad mistakes. Tyrrell and i talked about that game awhile back. That Lake team was very good.

The 92 play-off game against Lake Catholic and the 93 play-off game against Bellaire were absolute classics. That 92 Irish team with Tyrell deserved a shot at the title. That loss was a severe gut punch. I'd love to see the Cougars on the schedule regularly. I have a lot of respect for their program.

Every school with open enrollment is the same. There’s no difference between a private school and an open enrollment school. Mahoning Valley has a lot of these schools. Ursuline’s schedule is all open enrollment opponents, except maybe Farrell, Pa.

I think every open enrollment school is different. There are a lot of open enrollment schools where they can only except a certain number of “out of district” kids due to enrollment restrictions.

I’d like to know what those numbers look like because I have no idea how that applies to each open enrollment school. That makes a difference, and in turn makes it different, in my opinion.

That said, I am against any split between public and private.

Also, there are plenty of NEO public schools that refuse to schedule local private schools. I don’t find it odd what’s happening to Ursuline in the Valley.

You dont know the history between Fitch and Ursuline, and how Fitch has constructed its program in recent years. That's why we're upset. As somebody said earlier, Fitch had no problem scheduling Ursuline when Ursuline was licking its wounds. Now that Ursuline is back up and running, they run away.

Ursuline fans aren't up in arms about East, Chaney, etc. dropping us. But Fitch dropping us is a complete joke.

Accepting so many kids is the same thing as private schools. While Mooney’s enrollment has fallen, and Ursuline has increased, neither school can nor will accept an unlimited number of kids. There are only so many they can take, and the spots are first offered to feeder schools, then they open up to kids outside of those. The majority of the kids in these schools come from feeder schools. As for teams not playing Ursuline, I don’t think they truly care. The Fitch game would bring a big crowd and represent some fun local bragging rights. However, it appears those are 2 programs going in different directions. Ursuline wants to prepare to beat the TCC & Watterson's and Fitch has no interest in preparing to beat the WJ & Hoban's. Ursuline is the only team in that area that’ll be competing year in and year out for the state championship.

I was surprised to learn that Ursuline caps their enrollment. Is this is a diocese decision, or....? It seems against their interest to cap. Is this done to maintain balance across Ursuline, Mooney, and JFK?

More than likely to limit classroom size, would think it’s not the easiest to bring in a lot more faculty with most teachers preferring the state retirement system

My response wasn’t solely addressing Fitch not playing Ursuline. There have been plenty of comments made on this thread about Youngstown public schools not willing to play Ursuline, which was the premise of my post.

Ursuline is a great program, and having difficulty scheduling games is a compliment. I look forward to the Hilltoppers meeting up with them again in Region 9.

After this season I suspect that Farrell PA will look elsewhere to fill week 3. Ursuline joins the ranks of St. Edward, St. Ignatius, Steubenville, Elder, Archbishop Moeller, Massillon, Toledo Central Catholic, St. Xavier, Bishop Watterson, Archbishop Hoban, etc. in struggling to fill a schedule. What other Ohio schools are in this august body?

For a Geneva fan, you know a lot about the Mahoning Valley!

I was actually shocked that the Steelers didn't back out of this years game. We could of beat them by 80 last year. At one point the refs let them snap the ball while the Irish D was on the sidelines talking to the coaches after a time out and they still didn't score. I give Farrell credit, they aren't afraid to play anybody, they just aren't the Farrell of ol right now.

I know a little bit, and graduated from Youngstown State a long, long time ago. I always loved the importance of HS football in the valley. I have some friends and family who are connected to a handful of teams. As for my username, I had cousins who played for Geneva in the early 2000s and am still a fan. Not that they were great, but they used to beat Kirtland.

Farrell might get manhandled again, but they are one of those teams that backs down from nobody. As we know, they also played WGH recently. Also, not the exact same thing, but their Jr High team played Austintown a few years ago. Kinda like Aliquippa- thats one tough community
I remember reading a thread a few years ago about Farrell dropping Canton CC. Crusader nation was convinced that the Steelers were duckung them. Sytotyk had to set them straight on the WPIAL scheduling that made that matchup unavailable.

I grew up playing Farrell against the likes of Lorenzo Styles and Bobby Bloodsaw. I still work in Farrell. I know how tough they are and how passionate the fans are. They definitely have my respect. I was pretty shocked at how uncompetitive they were against us last year. I know they were young but it was bad. They should be better this year, but so should we.

AJ Snyder racked up some solid offers the other day. He received offers from Army, Navy, Air Force, Brown and U Penn.
There will be more coming for sure. Great kid, great player, great grades, it all adds up. I expect more offers for some more kids in the offing this summer. Their camp trip this year is a pretty epic one. Alabama, Florida, Florida St, South Florida and Coastal Carolina. Im jealous. Im trying to figure out how to dusguise myself as a player. Haha

Would Ursuline ever play against Hoban, St. Ignatius or Massillon in the future? I know Massillon has played Warren Harding and Austintown Fitch in recent years, and Fitch played (and beat) Ignatius in 2023.

We reached out to Massillon to fill week 4 this year but they had just signed the contract to play the team from NY. The Irish have played Hoban in the past. Im not too sure about Iggy though.

The Irish went up against Massillon several times in the past. As for Cleveland Saint Ignatius only once --- the final game in 1936.
Ursuline 7, St. Ignatius 0. The northsiders took on Cleveland Benedictine that year as well, winning 26-7.

In the 2000's, every member from the old SVC (Austintown Fitch, Boardman, Cardinal Mooney, Ursuline, & Warren G. Harding) got at least one double-digit win over Hoban. That illustrates just how far that the Knights' program has come over the years. They were always solid, but Coach Tyrrell took them over the top.

Meanwhile, I can't speak for Ursuline, but while it wouldn't shock me if Coach Reardon would welcome the challenge of scheduling Iggy, the Wildcats' slate and current situation doesn't suggest that many computer points would be up for grabs. That MIGHT deter Ursuline from entertaining the idea, but as an outsider, I'd love to see it!

Tyrell's Irish hung 53 on Hoban in 1992.
