yeah you’re right. That one was more from my prospective. The game I played against them a player had just died so they played a really hard nose game and I suppose I just associated that with a successful season, but after an easy search that is not the case. They had a pretty difficult scheduleGood luck to Ursuline, but Lake was terrible during that time frame. That was the middle of the 7 year stint with O’Donnell. Really set the program in the wrong direction.
I would love to see Ursuline and Lake start playing again. Many great games, but nothing tops the regional final back in 1992. Tim Tyrell at QB and Trevor Stargill who ran wild on the Lake defense that night. Lake was ranked #1 in the state the entire year that season and just completely dominated all their opponents. Stargill took the first play of the third quarter 75 yards for a TD and Ursuline went up 21-0. The Lake crowd was stunned. Lake stormed back and scored 21 unanswered. The Irish got the ball back after Lake tied the game and I believe it was the very first play, but Tyrell threw a terrible pass and it was picked. Jim Novacavich kicked a 38 yard FG with about 40 seconds left to secure a Lake victory 24-21. Lake then demolished Lima Bath in the semifinal and then destroyed Ironton for the championship.
This was one of the best high school games I’ve ever witnessed.
