Ursuline & Cardinal Mooney prospects for 2025

Long time rivals SVSM & Austintown Fitch are no longer on the Cardinal's schedule in recent years. Was this by design?
I’m a Steubenville fan who has always respected the Mooney program. I don’t know the dynamics. I just know they run from nobody. An added bonus …. The Mooney fans I’ve met are super nice folks and they know their football!!

We declined because Ursuline is better by a “wide margin.”

In all seriousness, we usually don’t schedule Region 9 opponents in the regular season if we can find another option.
Perry is a good option and opponent. I don't know if we will get a week 4 game now or not. We have had a lot of teams turn us down so far. Im not sure if Indian Valley is still open but I would like to seeus play them. The Kinsey kid is the real deal and would love to see him against our defense.

If it is true that the Akron Irish will no longer play the Youngstown Irish beginning in '26, that will be a sad thing. SVSM is 9-1 against Ursuline the past decade so I find it curious. Maybe they'll pick up Mooney again thinking they might have a better chance against them. UHS stuck with SV's during the beak years....

Ursuline is in reload mode, not rebuild. I’d imagine SVSM isn’t the only school that is going to end a contract or not continue to play them. That 5-6 team Catholic conference, or whatever they want to call it, is a big deal for Ursuline to fill half of a schedule. It is not looking like any Mahoning valley teams will be filling any weeks. They will need the likes of Steubenville and teams like that to get 10 games in the next few seasons.

You are not wrong.

I'm also hearing that Austintown Fitch has dropped Ursuline after this coming season. So add that to another game we're going to need to pick up starting the following year.

I did not expect that. I definitely had the falcons as maybe the 1 or 2 local teams besides Mooney to remain a constant on the Ursuline schedule.

I love Wedgewood Pizza and Greenwood Chevrolet as much as anyone. However, this is weak sauce on the part of A-town if true.

East is understandable. Maybe Chaney too if they decide not to play the Irish. But teams like Fitch and St Vs certainly had no problem playing Ursuline when they were struggling. Dropping a rival when the rival is good is a b*tch move in my opinion. Suck it up, take your lumps, and get better. But hey, soft is the way of the world these days.

That is a shame. Those games have had some great crowds over the years.

I'm using last year's Garaway vs Indian Valley game as a reference here. The Kinsey kid is a stud for sure, but based on that game, Ursuline would outmatch I.V. at every other position. I'd think you'd be better served to look for a more competitive match-up.

I agree but so far everyone has turned us down
Massilon had signed a contract right before we contacted them. All others said no thank you. IV might be the only option left at this point.

As far as I know, Harding-Ursuline is locked in for a while. Unless Ursuline’s “scheduling alliance” with the Catholics has caused some confusion, but that’s doubtful as both schools were willing to work with each other had the conference came to fruition.

I should’ve clarified the statement better. WGH isn’t dropping Ursuline, and if, for some reason, they end up not playing each other, it’ll never be due to competitive issues. However, it does appear that Harding & Mooney will be the Irish’s only locally scheduled games. It is possible they run into a local team or two in the playoffs. Should that happen, I imagine coach Reardon will not take his foot off the gas.

Expect your last statement to happen a couple times this year, especially one game in particular.

Sorry for the book that follows lol

This is the same issue Reardon ran into his first time around at UHS. Ursuline became a state power and just about every local team scrammed.

I’m glad we are ripping off the Band aid so to speak. Let the teams that want to drop us do so now so we can build out a schedule down the road.

If Ursuline continues this up trend the schedule will look similar to 2014-2016 when our schedule reflected the three peat and we had the likes of both Massillons, Hoban, WJ and a few other teams that were at the time very good like Benedictine, St Vs and Mentor lake catholic.

Correct me if I’m wrong but I believe at some point we were playing Mentor and St Ed’s at one point as well.

I’m just hoping that UHS can maintain the enrollment increase that they have had. Worst case scenario at some point mooney keeps their academic building open but folds their players to Ursuline to compete with an assumably beefed up schedule.

Good luck to Ursuline, but Lake was terrible during that time frame. That was the middle of the 7 year stint with O’Donnell. Really set the program in the wrong direction.

I would love to see Ursuline and Lake start playing again. Many great games, but nothing tops the regional final back in 1992. Tim Tyrell at QB and Trevor Stargill who ran wild on the Lake defense that night. Lake was ranked #1 in the state the entire year that season and just completely dominated all their opponents. Stargill took the first play of the third quarter 75 yards for a TD and Ursuline went up 21-0. The Lake crowd was stunned. Lake stormed back and scored 21 unanswered. The Irish got the ball back after Lake tied the game and I believe it was the very first play, but Tyrell threw a terrible pass and it was picked. Jim Novacavich kicked a 38 yard FG with about 40 seconds left to secure a Lake victory 24-21. Lake then demolished Lima Bath in the semifinal and then destroyed Ironton for the championship.

This was one of the best high school games I’ve ever witnessed.
