U20 Worlds

Next up will be Lockett for gold against very tough Iranian. Had a somewhat difficult match vs. Austrian in 1/4 finals - winning 17-10. Looked worn out after that match. Show the Iranian as a 15 seed with Lockett being a 24 seed. Why even bother seeding if that is the best they can do. #1 seed lost 11-0 in the 1/8 finals to Gaurav of India - who #24 seed Lockett then beat 11-0 in the 1/4 finals...

Austrian is wrestling for bronze now vs Japanese wrestler who lost to Iranian by 10-0 TF in 4:27

They aren't seeded- it's random draw at U20s. Whatever numbers you are seeing are probably just their bracket location. Only tourney that is seeded is Senior worlds

I don't know - could be. I just looked at the fact the numbers added to 33 in the qualifying rounds, then 17 in the first round (assuming the top seed won) etc. etc. Never considered those might be pre-set numbered brackets for a seeded tourney. At least that helps it make sense. No conference of wrestling officials could be that bad at seeding - could they?

Also noticed that other brackets have numbering different, others the same way. For example, Mirasola did not get a "number" but his opponent in qualifying round was assigned a 14. Regardless, I agree that you are right - those can't be seed numbers.

No score :30 seconds into Lockett match. Almost missed that it was on the other mat.

Lockett put on clock

Little aggressiveness now between Lockett and Iranian.

Clock expires and Lockett down 1-0

Iranian put on clock 1:53 left

Lockett drops to his knees as about to be shoved out.
Clock expires 3-1
Iranian with TD shortly after 3-3 Iranian with criteria on last score

:49 left

Lockett looking for an opening. Iranian just playing defense. Lockett worn out

Can't get a score and loses 3-3

Lockett refuses to shake hands with Iranian. Can't say as that I blame him. Iranian shoved him a couple of times on the mat when Lockett did not back up out of center of circle. That is for the ref to address. Happened 2 or 3 times.

As someone, who will remain unnamed, once said about Iran "we begin bombing in 5 minutes" ;)

BTW - the Japanese wrestler Ono that beat Blaze won the gold with a 10-0 victory over Khari of Iran. Sources told me he is a distant relative to Yoko, but does not have any of her "music" on his Beats Flex headphones.

I'm going to say Blaze is the true silver medalist based on transitive properties by who lost by less.

Barr taken down in 13 seconds. 2 points + 1 for shove out or fleeing? Down 3-0

Barr gets in on a leg. Loses it. No score

In on a leg again. Elevates it and gets a push out. 3-1 Time stoppage for bloody nose on Barr. ;15 left in 1st.

He's battling. Good opponent

start of 2nd after long time at break with Iranian having leg checked out :)

Still 3-1 with 2:20 left.

Barr keeps stuffing the head. Now he pushes Barr.

Barr looks to have had back exposed. Score shows 5-1 Barr challenging. And AIN wrestler is back to claiming leg is hurting. Doesn't matter time stopped for challenge.

Now 6-1 on challenge lost. Expected that.

Barr pushing hard. Gets a push out but only :12 left.

Gives up a late TD off attempted shot. Final is 8-2

Barr gives a half hearted slap of hands as he looks away while that happens.

Ref just retired in the middle of the mat by taking his shoes off. No idea who it is. Walks away and someone else will have to go get the shoes and toss them out....

No gold today and only win is from Blaze. Still have a bronze needed from Mirasola and the gold at 125 vs. another Iranian will be tough. Medal ceremony going on for 74. Will have to see if Lockett continues to ignore the Iranian.

Has not looked at him once so far. I have a feeling he heads off the podium once the anthem for Islamic Republic of Iran is completed.

No - Lockett moves over to top step for photos and puts his arm around the back of champ. Looks like the bad blood is over.

Mirasola gets push out :30 in. 1-0

Fights off near TD.

:48 left in first. Still 1-0. No warnings issued to either wrestler. As it should be.

Now a warning to AZE wrestler for passivity.

Mirasola sizing up distance to the legs.

Then he takes the shot 13 seconds later and gets a push out. 2-0

Mirasola with step out 2-1

Again he gets pushed out 2-2 down on critera

In on a leg - and he gets back exposed on a roll over by AZE 4-2 down

Not looking good here

And he gets taken down near the end of match. Final 6-2 and Mirasola loses. Only one without a medal on the team - which is surprising in itself.

Only 1 win today. Up to Kueter to get 2nd gold for the tourney and 2nd win today. Another Iranian who will be favored.

Would be a huge upset if Kueter were to win. Iranian is huge. His arms look bigger than Kueter's thighs...not quite, but gives an idea of the difference in size.

Kueter put on clock and does not score. Down 1-0 with :22 left in 1st.

Then a quick push out on Kueter. down 2-0 at the break. Brands in the corner. Doesn't quite get his head up to Kueter's shoulder top.

Take down by Iranian. 4-0 Avoids a turn and gets out from under him

Has to hope this beast gets tired.

Yesss He gets an ankle and trips him up. TD 4-2 Only :16 left.

And it ends 4-2. Valiant effort. Maybe after a year of trying to add 40 pounds he'll be able to get it done. 3 golds for Iran, but 9 medals for the US takes the trophy for 1st place. Iran with no points at 92 and only 4 at 97 and 6 at 57 makes the difference. US will end with 175 - only 1 win today by Blaze gets 5 points for the 3rd. Iran - I think will end with 150 3 wins in 4 matches.

Trophy presentation had a bit of an awkward moment between the Iranian coach and the Asian woman that moved over to shake his hand after presenting Cox with the 1st place trophy.

Yoko!😂

Japan's 61 obviously put on a show this weekend but i was actually equally impressed by their 70kg champ. He buzz sawed 2 very good opponents in the semi and finals. Japans mfs have some real good young guns

Would y'all like some stats/facts? My records go back to 2003:

- Nine medals is a modern record for the US U20 men, surpassing the eight won last year. In 2017, with only eight weights, Team USA won seven medals with three golds.
- Luke Lilledahl became the third wrestler to win U17s and U20, after a couple guys named Spencer Lee and Mark Hall. Both obviously became NCAA champs and Lee won Olympic silver this year.
- Lilledahl also won his fourth age-group medal (silver/gold at both U17s and U20). Daton Fix I think is the only other man to do that, with a U17 bronze and 1 gold, 2 bronze at U20s.
- Last but not least, Lilledahl also became the third Missourian to win U20s after Rocky Elam (2021) and Dom Bradley (2009)
- Both 70kgs and 97kgs have had a US medalist the last four years, the longest active streak for any weight.
- Rademacher is the first medalist with Oregon listed as his hometown.
- Keuter is the first man to go gold and then silver in his two appearances. Lilledahl and Mesenbrink did the opposite in their appearances.

Honestly, what a fantastic team. Nine medals with a fifth, five finalists, and I think seven of the ten guys eligible for another year of U20s. If I was a betting man, I'd put a couple bucks on one of these 10 men being a 2028 Olympian and more than a couple on one being a 2032 Olympian.

Going through the list who could make the Olympic teams in years to come, looking at 2028:

57: Luke Lilledahl - Interested to see if he stays at 57 for life or not. I imagine he's got some growing left to do, so hopefully he can break the 65 KG curse for us at the olympics, but in 2028 he'll most likely have to compete against the next guy. Also Spencer would only be 29 by 2028 and honestly after his olympic run it's his weight to lose

61: Marcus Blaze - Blaze will more than likely be 65KG by the time 2028 rolls around and there's a good chance he grows into that weight and makes some noise. Could he break the 65KG Curse? Blaze Making the National Team is impressive!

65: Bo Bassett - At 20/21 Years old could he make the olympic team at 65KG ?... Man 65KG for 2028 is starting to look interesting... Along the same lines as the others though, I just can't pick him to beat Yianni or Zain by 2028.

70KG: PJ Duke - He's going to be in the most congested weight class for America at 74KG in 2028. I just don't see how he navigates past our current 74KG Reps, let alone adding in Carr and O'Toole.

74KG: Ladarion Lockett- He's going to have the same problem as Duke, but I'd give him the edge over a match with Duke. Still don't think he makes it in 2028 just because of his weight class.

79KG: Zack Ryder - If he cuts to 74 he runs into the same problem as the last 2. If he bulks to 86 he runs into olympic bronze medalist Aaron Brooks... Either way he's not making it out in 2028

86KG: Josh Barr - Oh look, a Penn State Guy who's good ar 86KG, never seen that before. Now that would be interesting to see if he could replicate what Brooks did to Taylor, to Brooks, but again just don't see that happening from a guy who will be 24 in 2028... could be wrong though.

92KG: Connor Mirasola - Dude will be 22 in 2028 and also has that fun choice of cutting down to 86 or bumping up to 97. Either way you're more than likely wrestling an olympic medalist to make the team. He'll for sure medal at World's for U20's the next couple of years (unless this year he turns 19), but again don't think he makes 2028

97KG: Justin Rademacher - What a great weekend for the young beaver! Kollin Moore won a bronze medal at U20's and that ultimately propelled him into being one of Ohio State's better wrestlers. I wonder if the same happens for Rademacher. I see the same thing happening for him in 2028 at the OTT as it has for Kollin where he just can't get past Snyder

125: Ben Keuter- Ben has to put on some pretty good size to be able to hang with Parris and Gwiz. I don't see him beating Parris, and in fact I see Kerkvliet being our 125KG rep in LA

I think unfortunately for these guys, the next generation of US Greats is ready for 2028, and these guys won't crack it until 2032

What college programs have these guys committed to? If any.
Luke Lilledahl - Penn State (Current Frosh)
Marcus Blaze - Senior @ Perrysburg in Ohio - No Commit Yet
Bo Bassett - Junior @ Bishop McCourt - No Commit Yet
PJ Duke - Penn State (Commit)
Ladarion Lockett - Oklahoma State (Commit)
Zack Ryder - Penn State (Current Frosh)
Josh Barr - Penn State (Current Soph)
Connor Mirasola - Penn State (Commit)
Justin Rademacher - Oregon State (Current Soph)
Ben Keuter - Iowa (Current Soph)

The sophomores and freshman could redshirt or be redshirts themselves, just going off of what was listed last year... lots of PSU guys....
