U20 Worlds

Saw on FloWrestling that the U20 world championships is scheduled to start next week - and has been moved to Pontevedra, Spain. Starts on 9/2 (labor day here) and runs through 9/8. Mens freestyle scheduled to begin on Friday 9/6. Thought I'd throw this out here since I was surprised to see this. Had not heard anything since it was postponed from earlier schedule start to the tourney. I think Spain is a relatively safe place to have the tourney and not worry too much about it getting postponed again. I think.

Where was it originally? I know U17s was moved a while ago, couldn't remember U20s. Pontevedra was where U23s were in 2022, I don't remember any issues then. USA has a super talented but young men's freestyle team, I'll have a post over the weekend on it I'm sure. Ohio native Marcus Blaze at 61kg will be of interest to many on here.

From my view, this is one heck of a team.

55kg Isiah Cortez in finals. 63 kg Otto Black wrestling in semi up 3-2. Maybe hope in Greco?

Rogotzke got teched r1

Otto Black wrestled great and is in the finals! Won 7-2.

Team USA will have 2 wrestle for greco gold tomorrow! That's kinda cool.

Rogotzke can be pulled in if Gordon (ROU) wins semi coming up.

Cortez and Black in the finals, Rix McElhinney and Attao in repechage. Ryder didn't get pulled in and went 0-1. Still an amazing day for U20 Greco, 2 medals is amazing for them and that's just part of the first day

Greco team looked a little more American today. Combined 2-5 in the morning, no one pulled back in. 60 and 82kg won a match each. Cortez loses 11-3 to take silver, Black blanked 8-0 in the first for his silver.

On edit: Rix McElhinney goes 1-1 and out, Attao on deck for bronze!

Tried to whittle down men's freestyle entries to a couple notable names. Just selected anyone who had medaled at worlds or U20 Euros this year. Lots of notables for me- Aitmuhkan at 97kg won senior worlds last year, Masoumi is a top 5 285 in the world but is stuck behind Zare, Kadiev is an excellent young Russian that has separated himself from the 86kg field. Think the US has a ton of great wrestlers, but I think they are a bit young. Ages of the US team:

20- Barr, Kueter, Rademacher
19- Mirasola, Lilledahl
18- Bassett, Lockett, Ryder, Blaze, (I think Duke is a 2006)

Predictions: Six medals. Love Lilledahl and Mirasola. I think Duke, Blaze and Bassett could also cause problems to a lot of guys.

Blaze is 17

Blaze is 17
Sorry, should have mentioned that's their "age" year (so born in 2006). UWW goes by birth year, so Blaze is in his age 18 year. Like in 2027, even though he will be 20 when U20 worlds happens, he won't be eligible because he will turn 21 before the end of the year.

Correct. I understood what you were saying. I was just stating that he is in fact 17. Until late November.

Here are the bios: https://www.themat.com/news/2024/september/02/2024-u-s-u20-men-s-freestyle-world-team-bios

Some of those appear to be wrong (Lockett January 9, 2006 listed as 17, should be 18) and some have provided no age at all which is just comical to me.

Rodriquez just got a fairly quick (0:59) first period pin over Mongolia for gold at 55 women's FS. Made it look pretty easy. Probably spent :30 seconds or more trying to get the other shoulder on the mat. Checked it and yes - put her on her back with a feet to back throw at :20, then at :59 it was called. So :39 seconds fighting to get the 2nd shoulder to the mat.

Draws for men's freestyle are out. Rademacher with the worst draw of the 10, but everybody else I think has a more than favorable matchup. Bassett v Ukraine will be a good litmus test for the youngster.

U.S. Men’s Freestyle Draw

57 kg – Luke Lilledahl (St. Charles, Mo./Nittany Lion WC/Titan Mercury WC) vs Kabe Matjanov (Turkmenistan)

61 kg – Marcus Blaze (Perrysburg, Ohio/Perrysburg WC) vs Dohyung Kim (Korea)

65 kg – Bo Bassett (Windber, Pa./Bishop McCort HS) vs Valentyn Hryhoryshyn (Ukraine)

70 kg – PJ Duke (Slate Hill, N.Y./KD Training Center) vs Zelimkhan Mutsukhaev (Poland)

74 kg – Ladarion Lockett (Stillwater, Okla./Cowboy WC) vs Baitemir Tuleberdiev (Kyrgyzstan)

79 kg – Zack Ryder (Westtown, N.Y./Nittany Lion WC) vs Jinju Li (China)

86 kg – Josh Barr (Davison, Mich./Nittany Lion WC) vs Azael Garcia Almaden (Spain) or Sachin Sachin (India)

92 kg – Connor Mirasola (Jackson, Wis./Nittany Lion WC) vs Grigori Tomaili (Moldova)

97 kg – Justin Rademacher (Corvallis, Ore./Beaver Dam RTC) vs Shakhman Nukhaev (Individual Neutral Athlete)

125 kg – Ben Kueter (Iowa City, Iowa/Hawkeye WC) vs Alikhan Kussainov (Kazakhstan)

Janiak will go for gold at 59kg. She gets Onishi from Japan who won by fall in her semi. Janiak won 10-2 on the strength of a TD and 4 turns in succession. Had not other scoring except from that. Gave up a TD to her INA opponent. Tough match to get gold.

Jasmine Robinson won in semis of 72Kg. In finals tomorrow.
Naomi Simon lost in 1/4's at 76Kg to Orlevych of Ukraine by a close 9-8 score. Orlevych then won in Semis leaving Simon in the hunt for bronze
.

Janiak loses in a quick one. Take down in :17 followed by 4 turns and its over in :44 seconds. 10-0. Had to watch the replay. It was over during the time I wrote the notes above. Kept waiting for it to come up - then they showed bronze matches at 68kg was next up.

Hard to guess which Japanese women's wrestler is going to be the next star, but Onishi impressed me a ton yesterday/today. Will be 22 in 2028, a name to watch for sure.

Zack Ryder with a first period TF 10-0 over China at 79kg. in qualifying round. Gets a #5 seed from Brazil in 1/8ths.

Looking at brackets, also a 10-0 tf in qualfying round at :47 seconds by John Duke at 70Kg. Probably why I missed it if it only lasted :47

Still in qualifying rounds, but will see USA at 57, 65, and 125 opening rounds for them coming up in addition to 70 and 79 that had US entrants in qualifying rounds. So that will involve Lilledahl at 57, and Kueter at 125

Bassett should have a qualifying round match coming up soon vs. Ukraine at 65.

Blaze will be tomorrow morning at 61 vs. Korea in a qualifying round to start his tourney off.

Basssett match coming on now. Bassett attacking but not scoring. Not sure the Ukrainian knows what he is up against. Bassett scores first on a push out. Then he gets exposed and reverses out. 2-2. Flurry of action with Bassett coming out ahead 6-4 off a series of TD and back exposures. Now a challenge on scoring. Could be that Bassett ends up behind on points after challenge from what I saw.

Bassett needs to be a little careful. The Ukrainian looks adept at countering his aggressiveness. Don't like how long these challenges take. Like starting fresh when the Ukrainian was sucking for air. After challenge, score is 6-4 with Bassett down. Kind of expected that.

Bassett gets a TD just before the break 6-6 Ukrainian ahead on criteria -was awarded a 4 point move during the challenge. Must be another challenge going on. Taking forever for action to start up after break. I didn't see a 4-pointer in that earlier action. No indication a challenge is going on - but the delay is at least 2 minutes now

Challenge was lost by Ukraine. Bassett now up 7-6. Bassett gets turned. Down 8-7. TD by Bassett 9-8 with 1:48 left. Ukrainian gassed
