The Official 2021 Cincinnati Reds Thread

Lineup has been disclosed...

So imagine being Shogo Akyama...a guy just called up from triple A is starting in CF tonight in TJ Friedel. And Suarez is starting vs. a right hander, that's actually a good thing. Mike Moustaks shouldn't start anymore.

Akiyama has had plenty of time to prove himself. End of that discussion.
If the Reds would have gone .500 after being 12 games over they would only be a half game up on the Cards at this point. Have to credit the Redbirds for playing well.

So, you are in favor of socialism? Compensation is earned by those that can produce more revenue for the employer.

Two more HR and 3 RBI for Joey. But hey, keep on hating Votto if it gets you through the day. Sorry that you are so angry all the time. Maybe moving to a socialist country would make you happy? They probably have terrible movies there, so you would enjoy that too.

How do you get that from my post. Just to be clear, NO, I am not in favor of socialism/marxism but those who kneel for the anthem are as long as it does not include their stature and pay. Basically, calling Votto a hypocrite.

Try paying a little bit more attention to my post before wrongfully accusing me of something horrid like that.

I hope Votto does great and helps the REDS win games but I do not like him or any other professional athlete or actor/actress who kneels for the anthem.

Put a fork in it again as Votto once again cannot get runners in from 3rd with less than two outs. EPIC fail by Votto leads to the REDS being finished in the race.

16 base runners, 2 runs scored. Exact opposite of clutch hitting, and that cements the fate for this year.

I'd like to see Greene and Lodolo get a start down the stretch in place of Miley and Gutierrez.

Those of you that have already anointed Gutierrez for the rotation next year, might want to look again. From mid-July to mid-August he was very good. His last 5 starts his ERA is 8.84 and his WHIP is 1.75. That is the same level of terrible as Castillo was in April/May. Now maybe he is just out of gas. But it should not a given that he is in the rotation next year. He does not have the track record of Castillo.

Miley also has a Sept ERA over 8.00, with a WHIP of 2.10. That is batting practice pitching. Yes, the offense disappeared down the stretch, but Miley and Gutierrez also played a big role in the Sept. collapse.

Sorry - thought your post was talking about minor leaguers and ground crews getting paid as much as Votto - guess I read it wrong.

Agree Miley and Gutierrez have fallen off at the end of the year. Do you think they are tired? Not having a full season last year, Miley’s age and Gutierrez’s rookie status factors?
They should still have not lost all of these games down the stretch bc as you mentioned, clutch hitting didn’t exist. Especially last night. ?

At this point I'd give Gutierrez a better chance than Miley going into 2022. Miley stuff, he has to be perfect to be effective. Gutierrez may be fatigued to a certain degree, but I really hate that excuse. Who cares if they didn't pitch last season? That just means they should be well rested for this year. He's been on a normal rotation, it's not like he's throwing 8-9 innings and 140 pitches per outing. I think major league pitchers are coddled more than any other athlete in sports.

What you talking about Willis? Maybe you got banned

We're back!

I would like to see a pitching plan that puts emphasis on getting outs rather than strikeouts. The major reason we can’t extend our starters is that their pitch counts approach 100 pitches by the 5th inning. Mahle Castillo and Gray are all guilty of this and is also why they walk a lot of guys. Get ahead then try to put a hitter away with pitches out of the zone. Then it’s 2-2/3-2 and we walk guys. There are situations where need to go after the k. But most times I think they are chasing Ks too much. Too me it’s once again a fundamental thing
How about a major league cf throwing to the plate late to allow the hitter/runner to advance to second on the throw. Only for the next hitter to drive him in with single. Happened again last night and allowed a 2-1 lead to evaporate to a 3-2 deficit. Overthrew the cut man with no chance to cut down the second run.
Yes let’s give the manager of that team another two years.

Of course Gutierrez has a better chance than Miley - he is younger and cheaper. But his season long numbers are just so-so, and his Sept numbers are atrocious. I'll certainly root for the kid, but he should not be considered a lock for the rotation next year. Castillo, Mahle and Gray are locks. Greene and Lodolo should both get a hard look.

Why the rush to extend Bell? Not saying re-hiring him was right or wrong, but the timing is very odd. Seems like it would make more sense to wait for the off-season. Take a little time to digest everything, have management plan the direction, make player and coaching decisions.

Speculating (and hoping).
(1) I wonder if Castellanos really likes Bell and his agent communicated that to management. Maybe an early move like this was to try and influence the player's decision??
(2) Could be that they are trying to give the players a signal that management believes in the group they have, and that they are going to give it one more shot next year with most of the same core group??

I cannot think of any other reasons to rush to re-sign Bell in late September instead of November, after giving it some thought. Other than straight-up mis-management, which is certainly a possibility with the Reds.

I will go another way with a thought. They may have targeted another person to bring in and were turned down. Also with the minor league coordinators resigning there certainly could have been a thought to move beyond Krall/Bell from within. No idea, just seems strange to not extend him earlier but do it after they broke an ankle falling off the win wagon.

I believe I predicted 73 wins on Opening Day. 3-5 the rest of the way seems likely, considering how the wheels have completely fallen off.

Slight improvement I guess, but still incredibly disappointing. Just looking at pitching alone, relief pitchers have taken 30 of the Reds' 75 losses so far. With a decent bullpen and this team would be in contention right now, no question.

100%.

To go from 12 games over .500 and in control to 3 games over hopelessly out of it 3-4 weeks later is really disappointing. Funny thing is, during the collapse, the bullpen has been decent. Everything thing else fell apart.

I predicted 81-81 at the start of the season and unfortunately we will be right around there. I was much happier being wrong when they were 12 games over .500.

I think the major reason Bell was resigned is because the players like him so much. We can complain about a lot of things, but this team has had next to no clubhouse issues under Bell.
And really judging the way he managed the team down the stretch, did is he ever seem like guy who was fighting to keep his job? My biggest complaint with Bell is his lack of energy and fire. I do believe the players are too "comfortable" with him. Now of course I have no idea what he's like behind closed doors, but I'd be shocked if he's much different than the guy we see in those horrible pre and post game interviews. Does he make you want to go out an fight hard for a win?
I would LOVE to see Castellenos stay, but I just can't believe the Reds can make that happen. He'd have to take a pretty good discount and can this franchise really put that many resources into one position player?

But you’re a baseball God! You had to know your prediction would be right, it would be blasphemous if you made a mistake

why can't we post new comments on here? Has the moderator ended the season for us?
This post left me scratching my head. If you can't post anything on here that means you can't ask the question why you can't post anything on here. The mere fact we can read your post means it is working.

I have a lot of trouble posting on Yappi around 1:30-3:30 in the morning when I get up. Figure it's a server issue?

Will the Reds finish above .500?
That is unlikely IMO. that would require an 82-80 record. I just don't see them having any fight left in them as clearly the race is over. I predict 80-81 wins.

3-6 =81/81. That's right where they have been playing for the last week or two. 4-5 would be overachieving at this point.
