Reports that Clemson and Alabama coaches were at school today.
As far as I know no Bomber has ever played for the Crimson Tide and Matt Bockhorst (class of 2016) is the lone Clemson Tiger
Exciting times!

I knew he worked with Tony Pike last year but not since 7th grade.
It was evident the summer of his frosh year that he was a special talent
His scrambling ability and arm strength coupled with Cam Taylor’s ability to get behind defenses made it easy to either loft it 60 yards or tuck and head for the end zone.

It might have paid dividends to limit the runs and bombs and force him to read defenses, scroll through progressions, change plays and make short and intermediate throws. When he was brought up to JV games late frosh year he struggled mightily.

The article fairly lists him as a true athlete rather than a QB as he is far more dangerous rushing and kick returning than throwing (at this time)

HIs throws in the St. Ignatius game in crappy weather were impressive (zip, timing, accuracy) and he's been showcasing his abilities on the camp circuit.

Hopefully he continues to work with Pike during the lacrosse season and when he hangs up the stick in mid May he’ll be ready to devote all his time to the sport that is his ticket for a free college education.

The kid is a machine. Works out almost everyday. Currently doing lacrosse. Extra speed and agility work as well as qb work on weekends. He may rest a few hours on Sunday and is right back at it. Upcoming season is going to be an interesting one.

Add UC to Vollmers list. This is interesting as I believe he and Chase visited the same day.
I’m told Herbstreit and Vollmer are good friends…..also live near each other.
Also that Herbstreit is a leader in the weight room and the film room.
If their attributes could be combined X would have a all state dual threat QB

Expect at least 4 players (them plus McDonald and Soloria) to be given reps and an objective evaluation for the position

As far as college offers Vollmer’s measurables for a sophomore as such that tells recruiters he’s a D1 prospect at some position.
Not so much for Herbstreit…..he has to rely on the intangibles and immeasurables
He could have benefited from a growth spurt to get him to 6’3” or 6’4” but apparently that hasn’t happened.

It seems he made a wise decision to stay off social media.
Early on it was his friend as he got a lot of positive press having had a fairly successful sophomore year when he took over for Jack in week 5.
The hype heading into last season was palpable but the bloom came off the rose with a sputtering offense.
In hindsight it was a revamped offensive line and a limited wide receiver corps whose leading receiver was a converted backup cornerback

All the kids get along great with Chase from what I know. It's us adults that make it seem like otherwise. Coverdale and Specht need to get it figured out, have the hard conversations (regardless of who the guy is emphasizing they can and will be replaced if not up to snuff) and proceed.

Clapper picks up an offer from Rutgers

Solid numbers for a sophomore

If you're not familiar with the ratings system here is detailed information

In March (now) they will release ratings for the Class of 2026
Will be interesting to see what ratings are given Clapper and Vollmer.
Then in May they do a spring update and in October a mid season update.

The 5 star rating system of high school football players began around 20 years ago

In that time the Bombers have had one 5 star player, six 4 star players and twenty-eight 3 star players

Long time Bomber fans: can you name the 5 star player and the six 4 star players since 2005?

Parris Johnson 5 star
Ted Hammond 4
Justin Hilliard 4
Rob Schoenhoft 4
I didn't initially include Johnson since he didn't graduate from X but he was a former Bomber
So including him then the Bombers have had two 5 star players....Johnson and Justin Hilliard

Hammond was a 3 star

Schoenhoft was both an interesting and controversial recruit.
3 of the 4 scouting outfits (ON3, ESPN and 247sports) did not rank him whereas rivals had him as a 4 star

Based on his college career the majority had it correct.
He was an enigma as the 4 outfits are in agreement almost all the time.
I used ON3 to categorize the players

So the 2 5 star players Paris Johnson Jr. and Justin Hilliard (both of whom went to Ohio State) have been named
And 2 of the six 4 star players (Matt James - Notre Dame and Sean Clifford - Penn State) have been named.
Who were the other four 4 star players?

To help zero in here are the 3 star players (28) and the year of their senior season

Ted Hammond (23), Rob Fogler (22), Brian Parker (21), Max Klare (21), Grant Lyons (21), Cam Collins (21), Liam Clifford (20), Marshall Lang (19), Blake Bacevich (17), Noah Davis (15), Andrew Homer (15), Ben Glines (14), C.J. Hilliard (13), Nick Carovillano (13), Trey Kilgore (12), Nathan Gerbus (11), Connor Hundley (11), Brandyn Cook (10), Sean Duggan (10), Luke Massa (09), Luke Kuechly (08), Pat Muldoon (08), Greg Scruggs (07), Stephon Ball (07), Danny Milligan (07) and Alex Albright (05)

Time's up

4 Star Bombers and the year of their senior season and college(s)
Matt Bockhorst (16) Clemson
Sean Clifford (16) Penn State, Green Bay Packers
Steven Daniels (10) Vanderbilt
Matt James (09) Notre Dame
Darius Ashley (07) Louisville
Fred Craig (07) Stanford, Penn

So the only 5 star Bombers along with Schoenhoft have been the only Bombers to play at Ohio State who were on scholarship.
And I don't think Alabama has ever offered a Bomber.
Will Clapper (or anyone else) need a 5 star rating to get an offer from these programs??

Since 2000 only 3 players from the Cincinnati area have signed with Alabama
Derek Kief and Devonta Smith of LaSalle and Ryan Kelly of Lakota West

Specht tried in vain to get high profile programs to offer Luke Kuechly but all passed because of his 3 star rating.
Boston College defensive coordinator Frank Spaziani who succeeded head coach Tom O'Brien (a 1967 StX grad) "took a chance" on Kuechly and the rest is history. After Kuechly's freshman season saw him make 158 tackles and be named 1st team All-American, the same coaches who passed on Kuechly came back at Specht and blamed him for not convincing them to offer him lol

Joe Thuney, from Alter HS, is a similar story to Kuechly. He was unheralded and shunned by the local schools but ended up a 4-year starter at NC State. I think while there Joe played center, guard and tackle. In the 2015 draft, he went to the Patriots in the third round and career-to-date has won 4 SBs (played in 5). He won 2 with the Patriots/Brady and two with the Chiefs/Mahomes. Storybook career.

Saw Andrew Weber now has offers from West Point (Army) and a PWO from Kentucky - I am surprised Elder kids don't get more offers. I wonder if Specht works harder than Ramsey at this? Elder always has a lot of good football players, but do not get a lot of offers. Ryan Brass (Elder) going to Navy and playing with Noah Beck will be very cool. Both Visitation kids. West side Pride.

Specht is proactive in marketing his players and college coaches know he’s going to be honest about the players
He’s well known across the country (2008-2010 USA Football, 2013 NFL HS Coach of the Year, 2017 Authored 4th and Redemption re the 2016 championship season, active on the Nike Football Coaches speaking circuit etc)

Last year 42 former Bomber players/grads were playing college football.

I remember when Pitt coach Paul Chryst rescinded a players scholarship (2013) and Specht put a ban on Chryst and any of his staff from stepping foot into StX HS. When Chryst left Pitt and became HC at Wisconsin Specht said the ban still stands and Wisconsin isn't allowed at X.
That caused a problem in 2017 when Wisconsin wanted to recruit Chase Wolf. Former Bomber player Pat Muldoon was on staff at Wisconsin and between him and Steve Wolf (Chase's dad and XU all time leading basketball scorer) they forced Specht to rescind the ban (funny stuff)
Here's the hit piece from WCPO that made it even more hilarious

I don’t know, but would guess Ramsey’s not nearly as proactive or connected across the country
And I’ve been told that a lot of the potential college players at Elder choose Mt St Joe or Thomas More and it’s called another 4 years of Elder.
Don't know that for sure but Elder does seem to have a lot of players go to those 2 schools
