Colerain Going Forward

This ultimately happened to Coach Minton at Wayne. People in the community started complaining about his "salary", and it ultimately led to him resigning. You get what you pay for with these elite coaches. Incredible culture, phenomenal results, and a significant revenue boost to not only the school, but to local businesses.
Does the revenue boost for schools come out above the amount spent on football? For the overwhelming majority, it's a no. And winning football games is significantly boosting local businesses? Not so much. Even with dominant teams and programs, stadiums are usually nowhere close to capacity. And there's a handful of home games per year, 5-7 days of being more busy than usual at a restaurant isn't moving the bottom line much if any.

This was my point when Bolden got the job at LW....an absolute joke and slap in the face to those more qualified. Colerain has refused to do this under past leadership and I assume it is the same under current leadership. No hard feelings towards Bolden, we'd all jump at the chance.

thats crazy how quickly it went in the wrong direction once Bolden left. I knew Huber WAY before he was the Head Football coach , dude is an AWESOME person. there is NO WAY someone can put all of this on him for that quickly of a decline.
Not his fault, yes he was not Big school ready as a HC he did what he could do...NWLSD needs to pay other coaches to have a total coaching effort. Also when the school was competetiave the students got priviate instruction to help their play in many sports.

not sure what 'was politely asked to leave colerain 10-12 yrs ago" has to do with anything.... Huber is a good guy. There's more than a few current GMC head coaches with their own past (or current) marital issues family / 'personal leadership' issues......, etc - see LW (back at NW) FF and Hamilton if you dig deep enough..... If being a good guy was factor, Huber would still be head coach. #justwinbaby
Most Schools that ask someone to leave don't usually ask them to come back! Huber=Zack Taylor. Great person, Terrible Football Coach!

So are youOK with private schools doing it? (because you know it happens there too LOL)
Bolden being a GREAT example I am sure 10X brings $$ into the district that it pays to him.

* dean of students
* head of security
* safety director

the list can go on w/job titles private or public jobs get created for people they want in the building.
Private Schools can make up whatever job they want, majority of their money not tax payer money. How does LW make $$$ off of Kids College Scholarships?

Who is getting the Colerain job? Who WANTS the Colerain job? I'm curious what the expectations are for whoever comes in.

I don't blame Bolden for the move he made. He "got the bag" as the younger folks say and he deserved it. (Personally, I'm not comfortable with public school districts who create fake jobs for football coaches, but I'm not a tax payer in the Lakota Local School District.)

I think Bolden's departure left a scar on the psyche of the Colerain and NWLSD community that has probably only worsened because of the collapse of the football program. My wife left teaching in the Lakota school district for a job teaching in the Northwest school district the same year that Bolden went in the opposite direction and said that she had multiple colleagues--people who were Colerain High School grads and NWLSD employees--who asked her why she would leave a district like Lakota to teach in a district like theirs. Those questions weren't entirely because of Bolden but it all comes back to a lack of leadership in the district.
I disagree with the notion of it being a "fake job". Investing in athletics yields better results in academics. Kids that participate in extracurriculars have lower drop out rates, fewer discipline issues, and better grades than the students who are not involved in sports or clubs. The football program *when run the right way* is invaluable to the culture of a school. The football team is often the largest collection of students in a school and certainly the most visible. That part is often left behind the scenes, since wins/losses are what matter most. But keeping the HC out of the classroom is not an unusual thing in other states. It gives that coach the time to monitor their athlete's grades, meet with college coaches to help with recruitment, build relationships with the middle schools, maintain facilities, and do all of the other work that makes a football program more than just a football team.

I think Colerain needs to hire a young guy to take over and let him build the culture he wants. I think getting a Colerain alum would be a good move myself.
It really does not matter who they hire, They need TALENT...Look what happened to the top players that jumped ship to other schools. Went from starters at key positions to backups or having to change sides of the ball to see the field. The GMC is packed with talent thus why CHS struggles in almost all sports...Now if they change leagues, they could be competitive or merge HS with NW. Outside of that look for not much to change over the next few years.

I can agree with this, but I think getting a younger coach would be better. And while yes they could jump ship to a new league, are they really going to give up their spot in the GMC?

There is a lot more needed than just a head coach.
Any coach hired needs to be able to bring in “quality” assistant coaches and young coaches tend need to work up the ranks as assistants then they can network to pull together a staff for HC opportunities.

As far as the GMC as a good fit? Its should be and, for years was. But declining district enrolment has had a negative impact not only with athletes but in the ability to field teams at all levels of play.

CHS has struggled in the GMC for years in most sports. Now that football has made the turn to non-competitive in the league there is limited options to bring back the athletics to have some degree of competitive programs.
The best option is to combine HS. While this is no guarantee it will help as Northwest is in even worse shape in most sports, but having more available athletes has to have some positive impact and could attract a younger or more established coach and coaching. They could look for a league most sports could be competitive (ECC if they want to Expand). GMC brings on a couple more schools but that too is no guarantee that the schools would not be stronger than CHS or those schools would open up spots in a league that wouldwant a CHS, Open enrollment. With declining enrolment at both HS open enrolment could help if, the schools could attract the right students from a Mt Healthy, CPS, WW or NCH that does not bring.

Many are surprised when they look at what all programs have done the past 10 years in the league.

I mean I agree 100% that Colerain isn’t competitive in the GMC, there’s no arguing that. I think a merger with Northwest is also the best option, but neither school has a great amount of talent at any level, but having a greater amount of players to pick from would be the best option to try and compete again.

As for their future in the GMC, I would think administration is open to leaving the league. The ECC I would think wouldn’t take them as they are at 10 teams. I think their best bet is what remains of the SWOC. Let Harrison have their spot in the GMC and Colerain, Northwest and Mt Healthy can form something. But if they combine with Northwest they will be staying in the GMC 100%

Great post.

This isn't as easy as the "school is most important" crowd wants you to think. Those people don't live the reality of what alot of these kids go through every day.

If you don't understand it, then that's ok. When you have a successful program, your population count rises. People want to move to those "successful" districts so their kids can have better opportunities. Increased population means more tax revenue. Increased population means more businesses being willing to open there. I could go on, but I'm guessing you get what I was saying.

Leaving the GMC because of a few bad seasons would be short sighted IMO. We had this same discussion about Princeton leaving the GMC in when they had 1 winning season from 2012-2018. Now they are a top 5 team in the region and won the GMC back to back years. If Colerain can keep all the Colerain kids in Colerain, and combine with Northwest, they'll have some talented classes come through and be competitive again. May not get back to 20 consecutive GMC championships good, but will have competitive seasons. No reason to leave a strong conference because of some bad years. Admins need to invest in athletics, get the right coaches in there and get to work. The talent will come back around at some point.

Yeah no, this isn't the NFL or major college football.

It is all about disposable income and demographics. If Colerain becomes a top program tomorrow, Northgate Mall isn't becoming Kenwood.

This is a silly post.

Your response is silly. My replies weren't talking about Colerain Township. My replies have been on the topic of how significant of an impact a great coach can have, not only on the field, but in the community as well. Let's take athletics out of the equation and talk about the City of Mason. Over the last 20+ years, Mason's population has more than tripled. People want to live in that district because of the academics. With that influx in population, Mason has experienced tremendous growth from a commerce perspective, thus generating a revenue boom for the City.

You clearly have a great misunderstanding of lots of things. There are not floods of people moving into Lakota's district because West is good at football. There may be a handful, even a dozen, but that's not enough to move the needle on tax revenue, businesses opening, etc. I remember when Lakota was talking about opening a 3rd high school, that went away because the overall high school population leveled off. The student population hasn't skyrocketed suddenly because Bolden is there, so try again. No businesses opened because of the football team. Like I said, none of this makes ANY economic sense, and neither does a ridiculous claim that Bolden's exorbitant salary returns over a million in revenue to the school.

I mean if Oak Hills left the GMC their only other plausible option is what remains of the SWOC lol. The ECC is a hard no, they are at 10 teams, I am sure Oak Hills wants nothing to do with the CMAC. But hey, an Oak Hills/Harrison rivalry does sound fun. Let them bring Colerain too!
😂 definitely not that much but… he is bringing in more than he makes for sure. And for the gent that said he has a made up position at LW… this is not true. He works his tail off on a day to day basis in that school with the kids and staff.

So what's his job? Why does he have an admin job without an admin license? Why did that job not exist before he got there?

It was literally made up for him.

The job did exist before he was employed at Lakota. He handles discipline, safety, and basically about 1,000 random tasks on a daily basis. The guy has changed the culture at LW. Who cares about a license?

You are incorrect in stating that the position was made up for him.

Are you mad because he left your precious Colerain or because he’s a winner?

No dog in this fight, but to answer the question you have posted above... Who cares about a license?

Most jobs in the educational system in the state of Ohio require some type of license/certification. Many districts make up jobs, sometimes that do not require a teacher/administrative license that fits the coach's needs. A lot of licensed professionals in education get really irritated by positions that are made up for coaches.... many of these positions pay more than a teacher's salary without direct student responsibility. (For example, required to teach a class with students assigned to them daily) Hall duty/cafeteria duties have student responsibilities, but not directly with students.

If they are irritated by that … then they should push to put themselves in a position to get a gig like that. The man is great at what he does and is being rewarded for it. Sorry to all that are offended , irritated or don’t like it.

Ohio Department of Education, taxpayers, just about everyone because you wouldn't want just anyone in schools. This may be the dumbest comment ever.

Who had the position before him? What is the position called? What's the job description for said job?

So you claim he's in charge of discipline and safety and handles 1000 random things daily. He's absolutely super human then, and the most efficient person in the history of education to accomplish 1000 tasks in a 7 hour school day. Incredible.

Look, I like Coach Bolden, and he's done a great job with the West program. He's a top notch coach. The issue is schools, which are strapped for money, suddenly find money to create 6 figure jobs that the classify as admin jobs, and give them to people who are unqualified. That's the problem. These jobs also violate board policies that vacancies be open to current employees first. Again, why have policies, rules when you don't follow them?
