Cleveland Browns 2023 Edition

It's about time. Talk about an sweetie who ruined a career. Have fun stocking shelves at Aldi.

It's a shame. I was hoping this dude would turn out to be a draft steal. Risk reward pick and just so happen the risk won out, I guess. I just don't get why these guys have to act like this. You have millions. You don't need to do things like this. It's a shame. I really hate seeing people squander away such a great natural gift. I hope he is able to get things turned around.

Most of the article:

CLEVELAND, Ohio – When the GM Andrew Berry and coach Kevin Stefanski took over the Browns in 2020, they talked about the players being “tough, smart and accountable.” It’s one of the phrases teams use, like with “culture,” to describe how they want players to be behave. With many of the players young, wealthy and sometimes spoiled, immaturity is likely to pop up at times. But I liked the “tough, smart and accountable” mantra because it’s a worthy goal. The Browns can point to players such as Nick Chubb, Joel Bitonio, Amari Cooper and some other veterans as role models. In 2020, the Browns were “tough, smart and accountable.” Off-field drama and incidents were few. The team overachieved with an 11-5 record and a playoff victory over Pittsburgh. Since then, the Browns seem to have lost their way. In 2021, there was off-field drama between Baker Mayfield and Odell Beckham Jr. Stefanski had trouble figuring out when to bench Mayfield, who kept playing when obviously hurt.
There was division in the locker room on some issues. Last year, there was the trade for Deshaun Watson. He brought along the civil suits and an 11-game suspension for his conduct with message therapists, and the Browns staggered to a 7-10 record. More than a few fans have asked me, “Where is ‘tough, smart and accountable?’ "It was a fair question.

THE PERRION MOVE

That’s why I said, “It’s about time” when the Browns released Perrion Winfrey, their troubled defensive tackle. As cleveland.com’s Mary Kay Cabot wrote: ”Cleveland Police Public Affairs Sgt. Jennifer Ciaccia said in an email response Winfrey is listed as a suspect in an aggravated robbery incident and that the law department is processing the report.”

This was first reported by Fox8 News, an incident where a woman wrote an Instagram post saying that Winfrey threatened her with a gun in downtown Cleveland on Tuesday night. Winfrey has had other brushes with the law. He was suspended for a game last season for an unnamed team violation. He should have been gone last spring when he was arrested on misdemeanor assault charges. They later were dropped.
How would you like to be among the “tough, smart and accountable” Browns players watching the team be so patient with Winfrey?
The guy is a young backup, a fourth-round pick in 2022. He’s done nothing to help the team. He seems to ignore warnings about his off-field behavior. This stuff has to stop.

The Winfrey release is a step in the proper direction. The Browns are in the rugged AFC North division. A way to win is “tough, smart and accountable.”

It’s up to everyone from Berry to Stefanski to Schwartz and the other coaches to bring it back.

The undeniable truth is that this dimwit, at minimum, continues to put himself in bad situations.

It's apparent that he's learned nothing from his years of conflict with the law, but someone sometime will probably pick him up for their team. The Browns have had too many years of distractions. Can't we have just one year where the emphasis is on football?

Another undeniable truth - maybe the Browns have to realize that their organization is not the ideal environment to bring in a dimwit such as Winfrey. Another guy Winfrey reminded me of was the Browns wr Corey Coleman. Josh Gordon was another who probably needed a stable environment to have a chance at succeeding. At least with DeShaun Watson he was a on field NFL proven commodity…..but at the price of 3 first rd draft picks and $232 million guaranteed…….questionable.

I know you are not a believer in the Watson trade, and right now there isn’t much ammo to defend it, but I still believe it was a gamble the Browns needed to take. The trade was basically a result of the previous GM blowing the chance to get the franchise QB when he foolishly took Baker Mayfield. The roster was good enough to keep the Browns up enough in the draft order to not be able to draft their franchise QB. Thankfully they were turned down by Seattle for Wilson. A QB of Watson’s age and ability is rarely available, and only due to unusual circumstances and the Browns were right to take the gamble, IMO. It’s now up to Stefanski and Watson to make the gamble pay off. I believe it will succeed, but even if it fails I will not hold it against the Browns for gambling on greatness.

I don’t disagree with Watson’s age and ability or what he had accomplished in the NFL in his 3 seasons of play. I question
* Watson the person for putting himself in this situation because of his actions.
* if Watson can mentally overcome what he has gone through (because his actions put him in this situation) and can he get back to the level of play that he was prior.

The early results were not impressive for $232 mil guaranteed. Yes, Watson has to overcome some rust and a full training camp and a preseason game can only help. But at $232 mil guaranteed - Watson needs to be the reason why the Browns win and not just along for the ride as a game manager.

This season will be telling.
