2025 St. Ignatius Football

Since Bentley has been there the program has gotten worse and that’s just a fact. Just because he played in the NFL means nothing. Just ask guys who went to school with him , none of them have anything good to say about him.
You seem very concerned about the Ignatius football program because you certainly comment on it enough.

This is all on Franzinger. He picked these coaches and knew what they were like.

Well that may be a fact, but from my vantage point he’s not even close to the top of the “blame list”. But for sure an easy out when looking to place blame.

from the streams I watched. The ignatius O line’s when healthy got bullied by Mentor, Avon, Walsh. All d-lines with great high school football players, but nobody with Conroy type offers. From fanvu it looked like the ignatius o line had no idea “who” to block, but were athletic and big. He definitely is a major blaming piece imo. D line stunk but looked tiny and slow. O line stunk with studs.

That’s a very accurate description.

Calling any outside of Conroy studs is crazy to me.

And I’m not saying he isn’t to blame but again two years now- all Franzinger’s choices. Live and fly with them.

I do think it’s funny that some Ignatius and even non Ignatius people are acting like the issue isn’t equally talent overall.

Completely overmatched on both sides by almost every team on the schedule. The scores are proof of that.

franzinger isn’t going anywhere any time soon. They will try to give him everything he needs to succeed, but I don’t know how he can survive after another year like the two we just experienced. Other area teams have done far more with less talent than we have.
Life is many times about support in the right places rather than performance. Same here, unfortunately

On Goul, he puts in the hours and has an impossible task of basically being a one man show for all HS sports coverage. I’ve always felt he comes across as not being a native Clevelander, but I respect the hustle. His coverage is more equitable of all the local schools than his predecessors, for better or worse.

On Bentley, I’ve met him but don’t know him. I have mostly heard extremely positive things from his former teammates. He is clearly a big personality and very opinionated. I can see why someone like that could be tough to have as an assistant, especially with a HC who has a more mild temperament. So is Bentley a bit divisive and a difficult personality? Possibly. But most people I’ve spoken with who know him well would want him by their side in the trenches.

I will post more later but I also think the OL performed better than most people are giving credit for (with room for improvement, like every aspect of the team).

I took a look at some stats and improvement from 2023 to 2024. I think much of the offensive improvement is getting lost in the overall record and peoples' negative feelings about the program, but the running game really was quite successful this season and the offense improved significantly overall. This is all regular season only.

2023 > 2024
Rushing YPC: 3.3 > 5.3
Rushing YPG: 93 > 166
Rushing TDs: 5 > 14
Yards per Completion: 11.0 > 15.0
Interceptions: 13 > 4
Passing TDs: 5 > 10
Sacks allowed: 20 > 7
Yards per game: 222 > 291
Yards per play: 4.5 > 6.0
Penalties: 67 > 47 (only one more than total from opponents)

Still a long way to go, but that is a lot of improvement. I think the offensive numbers were fair overall given the QB situation (started 1 junior and 2 sophs who collectively had 0 Varsity snaps coming into the season) and starting 4 different sophs at various points on the offensive line. This was also the first season with a new OC and new QB coach.

The extremely glaring problem with the team this year was they gave up 7.2 yards per rush. They also only had 6 sacks. Fixing those problems will go a long way toward overall team improvement.

That, and mental errors ( penalties at the worst times).

There's a punch line from this part of the survey right!?!?!?!?

If you viewed both broadcast types, FanVu and SIBN, this season, please describe which broadcast type you preferred and why. (This is strictly for broadcast purposes, not an assessment of the football team.) 140-character limit.

So, if the fans overwhelmingly vote for SIBN ( which they should), would the kids get their broadcasts back? Or, will the numbers be rigged to justify FanVu again?

It's odd to feel the need to state survey isn't fir feedback on the team itself. Seems telling the feedback they must be hearing

Congrats to Conroy on his commitment to Oklahoma. Can’t remember an Ignatius player ever going there in the past.
Congrats to him. Although, unfortunately, in these days of poaching commitments, one never knows where a player will eventually end up or finish his playing days. Commitments used to mean something.

If it is paywalled:

One of Northeast Ohio’s top offensive linemen in the Class of 2026 is off the recruiting board. St. Ignatius junior tackle Will Conroy announced Monday on social media he is committed to Oklahoma. The 6-foot-3, 285-pounder picked the Sooners over the likes of Ohio State, Michigan, Florida, Oregon and many more. He had been down to a top five of Oklahoma, Arizona State, Michigan, Miami and Florida since late July.

In choosing the Sooners, he becomes their third commitment in the Class of 2026 with four-star quarterback Jaden O’Neal of Habor City, Calif., and three-star tight end Ryder Mix of Frisco, Texas.

Although Conroy plays tackle for the Wildcats, he is projected as an interior offensive lineman at the next level and is rated three stars. Conroy is ranked as the No. 16 prospect in Ohio for the Class of 2026, according to 247Sports, which has him 17th nationally among interior offensive linemen. He also is among a talented junior class in the Cleveland and Akron area that includes four-star tackles Max Riley of Avon Lake and Sam Greer of Archbishop Hoban. Both are uncommitted.

The Wildcats (1-10) are projected to return most of the starters from their final game of the season, a 31-7 loss to top-seeded Mentor in the first round of the OHSAA Division I playoffs. St. Ignatius finished 1-10 and endured injuries to several key starters, including Conroy, Ohio State commit Cody Haddad and starting quarterback Daniel Chalhoub. Conroy is slated to be a third-year starter on St. Ignatius’ offensive line.

Traditionally speaking, not a whole lot of Ohio guys that end up at Oklahoma period. Usually the guys that are worthy of an Oklahoma offer also have offers from the Midwest powers, OSU, Michigan, ND, etc., and end up staying closer to home. Eagle TE Sam Grant did go there back in 2011 or so. He converted to the o-line, but I don't think saw a ton of action. He also happened to pursue a career in petroleum engineering, so the trek to Oklahoma made sense.

While Conway going to Oklahoma was an eye-opener, IMO the most outlandish example of an Ignatius athlete going to a surprise school was Chris Dowling '67, younger brother of Pat and Brian, who received a basketball scholarship to BYU. I think that the number of Ignatius students who went to BYU could be counted on one hand.

I do remember that. Think he was initially committed to Michigan and changed late in his recruitment.

Taking an early guess at starters for next year:

QB: Chalhoub / Donovan - should be an interesting QB competition. Both are capable, will be up to who develops more in the offseason
RB: Colwell / Bobinski - both were very productive last season. I think Colwell will be great as the featured back
TE: O’Leary / Blasko - two more kids with good potential. I think Blasko has a higher ceiling in the passing game, but he missed his entire sophomore season
WR: Trey Haddad
WR: Simms
WR: Tekancic
WR: a number of others that could be in the mix: Paull, Xander Smith, Lamirand
LT: Van der Oord
LG: Miller
C: Halkiadakis
RG: Janosek
RT: Conroy
Others in the mix on o line: Leskovec (started several games this year), a number of the rising sophs (lots of size, need to get quicker and more powerful)

Defense assuming they stick with the 4-2-5

DE: Taylor
DT: Hughes - he grew a lot from freshman to sophomore year, if it keeps up my guess is he grows into a DT and moves inside
DT: Votypka, Hanson, Spinos
DE: Conrad - he will have a chance to be the best player on D next year. May play LB as well, especially if they go back to the 3-3-5
LB: Rivera
LB: Baker, Bykowski
Rising soph Matthias Machowski will be in the mix somewhere in the front 6
CB: McLean
CB: Packer
SS: Thomas
FS: Whelan
SS: Kennedy / Cupp. Both could see some time on offense as well

This would be a stark change from the last couple seasons with no sophs as full time starters to begin the year. Youth will no longer be an excuse, so expectations among the community for a significantly more competitive season will be fully justified.

No QB competition. Franzinger named Chalhoub a captain already.
