2012 Water Polo

Regardless of who comes out of the North, they will be hammered by UA in the state tournament. UA is the premier aquatics program in the state for both boys & girls. For the 4th time they will win both the boys' & girls' state title. No other school has ever done that!

UA lost big to Princeton at Regionals last year. Dont be so quick to give them the trophy. They will fall! AviatorPolo!

Does anyone know if the game schedule for the North & South Regionals is posted on the web? South is at Mason and the North is at St. Charles...I think.

Rjones, I understand your excitement for this water polo season, as it looks like UA is the team to beat, but saying that UA is the premiere aquatic program in the state is a bit much. On the girls side, no one can dispute the history of the UA swim program, but on the boys side, I think both St. X and St. Francis do not take a back seat to UA. St. X does not have the history in water polo, but their swimming history speaks for itself, and St. Francis has multiple state titles in both sports.

Maybe you meant UA is the premiere co-ed program.

Schedules

Schedules have been posted on the championships page. Live updates will take place for both regionals and states. One can follow the live updates by going to the championships page and clicking on the results link (which is linked to a Google Document) or you can follow on twitter @OhioWaterPolo

I vote that this is a down year in Ohio, and Ohio has been down for a few years now. Take a look at the all-ohio list from 2007 that is linked above, and tell me how many players from this year are as good as the boys on the 1st team from 07? 1, maybe 2?? Several Ohio teams in 07 (and a few years prior, the years that I know best) were beating top Michigan teams outside of Rockford. What's the best win that an Ohio team has in the last couple of years?

St Charles beat a very good Chicago PD team at the Ohio Cup two years ago and several strong Michigan teams earlier that year. I would argue that last year's SC team was better than that one. My inclination is that the overall competition in Ohio is down this year, but showing good trends in numbers for the future. Regardless, it seems like a good year for parity. UA may be the favorite, but will be tested, I believe, at states.

I also know that Milford has beaten Huron, who won the Michigan state championship, a few times in the last few years as well as some other top teams from Michigan. With that being said yes this is definitely a down year in Ohio. One could almost predict it would be though with losing some great talents with Matulis, Cogan, and Rabe. But all this does is create for even better competition and closer games. Regionals this weekend should be exciting!

Standout players to watch

There were 3 good players from last year just mentioned, so who are the players to watch in the upcoming tournaments?

2 things
1. its funny no one even acknowledges rjones idiocy anymore
2. some players to watch, syc-#2 and fry, mason's sophomore can't remember name and number, sc-aslaner, calcara, tw-reed, zvorchak, harper, sf-borgman, trimble, ua-leanza as well as reardon

It seems for this years regionals the North will just depend on how TW, St.F and SC each play and the South will be UA and Syc. Thoughts?

Well, our friend jonesey is at least solid in his loyalty, but I am surprised that the entire UA team was not mentioned ;) there has never been a better squad, ever, in history. Well, maybe the Hungarians could give them a run. Have a great time at the regionals this weekend. GO TW!

South regional: UA boys 12, Sycam'ore 2, UA girls 14, Sycamore 1

At States no one is within 5 goals of the Bears. That's domination!

Great week end of water polo. North region played Friday in OWU's pool. That is a great venue that was deep at both ends and had the appropriate width. Only draw back is that referees were on the same side of the pool. Future regionals should be played there! Don't know the finances for that, but proper facilities for the tournament are worth the investment.

I agree! All championship tournaments should be in all deep pools. Just saw results congrats to all. Does anyone have the schedule for next week? Can't find it and would like to go if I can make it. Might call off ill if I have to.

I could not agree more on having the regionals in a different venue that has a deep pool. Not sure why only Friday matches were at OWU, but trying to play water polo in the small 6 lane pool at St. Charles is difficult to say the least. It leads to a very physical match in which the referees play a more vital role. St. Francis had two starters with two exclusions very early in the match with TW, and ultimately had 4 starters with two exclusions. They managed to navigate this and win to get the #1 seed. Now, they just want to beat Sycamore before they "get dominated" by UA!!!!

UA looked good on Saturday, but the Aves had 2 men down, with Charlie out and Aaron fouling out in the 1st quarter. They wont dominate anybody at States. We will bring the aerial attack. AVESPOLOROCKS!

Charlie is unlikely to play this weekend but there is still a possibility that he will play and sycamore looked to struggle against everyone they played this past weekend they were just getting some late goals to make their wins look larger and then vs mason to get to state they really should not have won that game but a 4th quarter buzzer beater to send it to OT saved them

Game times on Friday:

5:00 - Girls: Thomas vs. Sycamore
6:15 - Girls: Upper Arlington vs. Napoleon
7:30 - Boys: St. Francis vs. Sycamore
8:45 - Boys: Upper Arlington vs. Thomas

Winners to state finals, losers to 3rd place game on Saturday.

Games on Saturday:

2:00 Girls 3rd place
3:30 Boys 3rd place
5:00 Girls State Championship
6:30 Boys State Championship

Predictions for week end:
Girls: Sycamore over Thomas
Girls: UA over Napoleon
Boys: Stf over Sycamore
Boys: Thomas over UA (That should upset rjones)

Finals
Girls: UA
Boys: Stf

girls semi results:
sycamore 6 tw 4
ua 15 napoleon 5

boys semi results
sycamore 9 sf 7
ua 18 tw 8

can sycamore ride the cincy crowd to make the games closer then they appear on paper? or will we see a repeat of the 10 plus goal wins from last weekend?

Congratulations to all the teams this weekend. Sycamore Boys and Girls finish of strong seasons to each get 2nd in State. Close game on the girls side but the Aviator girls just couldnt finish. Got to hand it to the UA boys. When was the last time an Ohio team went undefeated in Ohio? I looked at the scores and their closest game was by 2 to X.

On to next year for the Aviators! Indian Pride!

not sure about the last undefeated in ohio team, maybe the first kilbourne team that won with denti and keller, i know the second kilbourne team lost one in state, and one of the milfords lost one in state, but its been a long time... even crazier thing about the ua scores was the x game was played with jv the last 3 quarters to save energy at ohio cup, they really only had one game within 7 or 8 all year and that was sc... i think the real argument that can be made now is that this was the most dominant team in the history of the state, i don't think the best, but i would say pretty clearly a strong argument could me made this was the most dominant... a team that was never really remotely challenged in state

Congratulations to all of the teams, but especially to UA. They deserve to be held in very high regard. We all saw some very good water polo and some very bad officiating!!!

On to swimming. The road to Canton begins today!!!

They were certainly dominant, but a lot of that has to do with the huge talent drop this year in the state overall. Besides UA there just wasn't the talent there, but im not going to take anything away from them. They did a fantastic job and certainly deserved it.

Let me get this straight... UA only won in Ohio because of the HUGE talent drop. The fact that they were far and away the strongest swimmers in years, had the best field players in recent years, the strongest goalie in memory had nothing to do with it. But you're not "going to take anything away from them." In reality the reason that "the huge talent drop" seemed to exist is because of how good UA was in comparison. No team in Ohio from the recent past compares to UA. They are a team without weakness!
