1 week away from captains practices, 2 weeks from official practices, any thoughts on the upcoming season, players to watch, can SC make it 3 in a row, how will coaching changes end up working out? Early season rankings?

Its been a heck of a spring / summer of water polo! Moose WP took players from the Cincinnati teams and went out to 4 different tournaments, including the J.O. Qualifier. There should be a big difference in the depth of the Cincy teams this year from that. Came across the C-bus team a few times, and they were playing great polo too! Love this time of the year!

Working on an updated roster list as I did last year. It should be ready soon.

Looking over the southern rosters, 4 1st Team All-Ohio athletes graduated from the south, and 6 second team All-Ohio athletes - that's a lot of talent that graduated. But with the high level of upperclassmen returning, it should provide each of those teams a great opportunity to fill those voids. Should be a deep region with a lot of competition.

Nice run down of the south Mukisa. Are you doing the same for the North? I know SC was dominated by their seniors so they will have alot of holes to fill. They do have their goalie back. Not certain of the Worthingtons or StF, but would expect those 4 teams to be contending for the top 2 places in the North. UA should make it out of the South, but I would say the number two spot is up for grabs. Good luck to all. As always it will be an exciting season.

Looking over the rosters - 5 1st team All-Ohio graduated, 4 2nd team All-Ohio graduated - 9 All-Ohio combined, so the north takes a large hit from the top, but with each team returning between 7 and 10 upper classmen, the depth should be there for them just like the South.

Top to bottom across the state - there are a lot of holes to be filled, but each hole has several potential replacements with the large amount of returning players.

Last year there were only 2 teams returning a goalie, this year many teams have a senior goalie that has at least 1 year of experience. This should be a very fun year for polo in Ohio.

Predictions? Rankings? Preseason rankings get posted August 1st on www.ohiowaterpolo.com - I encourage you all to get involved in the forums over there. Good luck to all!

As far as St. Francis goes, a lot of talent was lost to graduation. There are some very talented young men to replace them. This year's team will be very tall, lanky, and have some very fast swimmers with very long arms. They will just not have the upper body strength that Dan DiSalle, Matt Zimmerman, and DJ MacDonald had. If they can use their speed, then they could be very good. It looks like there will be two goalies, with one of them being an ex football player who blocks a lot of shots. After this week's Sectionals at Miami, the swimmers are looking forward to resting and starting to concentrate on water polo.

In the north you have to like TW chances, returning its goalie and most of its team. Although SC returns a high number and its goalie, most of the returnees were reserves. SC may make it out of the regional but don't see them repeating as state champ. Look for TW & UA in the championship game.

Dayton Oakwood joins the world of Ohio Water Polo this year. They will play JV games this year and will play varsity games next year. We continue to trend in the right direction in terms of total teams.

Always great news when a new team comes into existence. Hopefully they will compete in the various JV tournaments offered. Will Oakwood have both boys & girls? Are there any other new teams on the horizon?

Good question. Our moose team played them the last 2 years, and they had a co-Ed team. Not sure what to expect from them this year.

New teams? AMDG has a girls team this year (comprised of Ursuline, MND, an Lakota).

We will add a Jr high team with Moose this season, and look to make it high school next year.

Gotta get Cleveland in on the mix.

It appears that water polo is here to stay at St. X. It is listed as a varsity sport and has a team page on the school's website. Here's the link to X's 2012 schedule. http://www.stxavier.org/page.cfm?p=1491&teamID=67&display=Schedule It will be interesting to see how quickly they move up in high school water polo. It took SC 4 years to reach the top, having won the state title in their 4th & 5th years of existence. Should we expect a similar timeline for St. X?

No question that X will be a force in coming seasons. By year 4 they will basically be on equal footing with other teams as their seniors will have been playing for 4 years. Expect to see significant improvement in the X team this year. But remember that SC's program had a destinct advantange over many in having Geoff Gear who all would agree is one of the best if not the best high school coach in the state. SC's rapid rise to the top only surprised the more casual observers. It remains to be seen if X can match SC's success.

TW v. SC

Thomas Worthington plays St. Charles at TW outside tomorrow (8/22) at 5:00. (The inside pool is getting tiled before this year's Ohio Cup)

Thoughts on the game?

Should be a good game. Possibly a preview of the North Regional as these are probably the 2 best teams in the North. I'm picking St. Charles but would expect it to be close.

Should be a fun game to watch. Both teams looked really strong at the Napoleon tournament.

Geoff Gear will be the reason why SC will probably be in the title hunt again this year. TW will be very good this year as well; however if you look at how many sophmores and juniors they have on their team i believe next year will be their year. SC will come out of the north for sure and it will be a fight between TW and St. F for the #2 spot. The South is relatively weak this year compared to the north with the exception of UA of course. St. X will improve a lot this year I believe and will be playing at a high level in a couple years under Jeff Carr. He has done a great job with them so far.

13-9 tw without one of their starters, i heard it was not necessarily that close, anyone there to give a report? is sc in danger of not making states with a potentially strong st francis?

TW starter missing? Why? If SC is coached as normal I think Gear will bring them along just fine. I think he might be the best coach in Ohio. That said he does have to rebuild. Thomas must have played a good game, they did only lose 2 players from last season. Has anyone seen or heard anything from St. F.? The North Regional appears to shaping up to be region to watch from results already posted. In the South it looks like Sycamore may have the upper hand in the Cincy area, based on Napoleon results. Have not heard anything about UA this season either, appears they missed the Ohio tournament season opener. With Ohio Cup being played a little earlier this year if all teams show up it may still leave some questions unanswered. But is usually a good gauge of how things are shaping up. Good luck to all the teams this season!!

St. Francis opens play this weekend in Ann Arbor, with games Friday and Saturday. Hopefully, there is something good to report next week.

TW clearly outplayed SC in the second half. If I remember right, it was tied at the half (or very close), then TW pulled away in the later stages of the game. SC scored two quick goals late in the game when TW pulled most of their starters.

Obviously SC has a lot of work to do this season to get back to where they were last year (losing 5-6 solid, senior starters has to hurt), but it is too early in the season to count anybody out.

Looked like SC had 10-12 freshmen on the JV squad...will be interesting to see what that team looks like in 4 years.

Good luck to those going to Michigan this weekend, it might be rough, those guys play together pretty much year round. Good luck to all this year, it should be another fun season.

Word out.of Ann arbor 7-2 rockford over ua, seems like a solid first game for ua against a traditional power, not sure of any sf scores yet

Other than the loss to Rockford, which was expected with Rockford being a powerhouse, any other news or sightings of the Golden Bears from Upper Arlington this season? What about St. Francis? UA doesn't play in OH until the Mason Invite...

UA was 2 & 2. They beat Birmingham Groves & Okemos soundly. They lost to Ann Arbor Huron and Rockford.

St. Francis was 1 & 3. They beat Birmingham Groves. They lost to Dexter, Ann Arbor Pioneer and Ann Arbor Huron.

TW had a nice trip to Michigan, finishing second to Ann Arbor Skyline in the Skyline Invitational. SC lost to TW in the preliminary round and to Skyline in the semifinal. Kilbourne had no wins in the Skyline. TW certainly looks like the top team in the North (and perhaps the state) at this early stage of the season.
