Walsh Jesuit 2025

Can they throw strikes? That is what wins you games in HS baseball. I've just started to follow HS baseball again after many years of not paying that much attention. I'm hearing that while pitching seems to be Walsh's strength, there are concerns about their accuracy. Any truth to that? If I'm going to a game, I assume I should try to see Sullivan pitch?
They’re probably not as good as the 2023 pitchers but it may take years to have a group that talented.

Sullivan is definitely the headliner on the staff this season. He started the first game and only gave up 1 walk.

Hopefully I'll get a chance to see him sometime this year.

Walsh has 5 rising seniors with D1 FBS offers.
Milan Parris 6-5 200 WR 2nd Team All State- Iowa State commit, offers from Wisconsin, Purdue, Kentucky
Jay Brewer CB- 8 offers including Ohio U, Miami OH, Bowling Green
Colton Crosley OL 2nd Team All State- 8 offers including Ohio U, Toledo, Bowling Green, Miami OH, Toledo
Caden Carter LB 3rd Team All State-10 offers including Ohio U, Miami OH, Bowling Green, Marshall
Grant Blaschak S- 6 offers including Miami OH, Bowling Green, Toledo, Buffalo

That's the most players with D1 offers in a single class for the Warriors. The previous high was the Class of 2000 with Sam Ruhe (Penn State), Ryan Robinette (Eastern Michigan), Dan Basch (Akron), and Dennis Thompson (Ohio U).
Gonna be a great season

Beacon article on the scheduling pact Walsh has joined-

I love it. Give me Watterson, Desales, Hartley, Ursuline, Hoban, SVSM, Ignatius, Benedictine and a couple rotating games in the future. (come on home Benny, i know your fans are on board).

I’m still thinking about the possibility of Watterson, Ursuline, Hoban, and Toledo Central Catholic in 2026.

Ryan Piech ‘23 was named Big East Pitcher of the Week. He is the #1 starter for Xavier. Ryan is a redshirt freshman.

I was going to ask if Coach Alexander could do the job full time but it appears they will look for a full time candidate.

It’s been a nice start of the season for the spring sports.
Softball team is #1 in the State (all divisions) according to MaxPreps. They were ranked #6 in the Nation last week. They haven’t lost a game yet. Their closest game was 9-4.

Baseball is ranked #3 in D2 according to the Coaches Poll. They are 3-1.

Boys Lacrosse is ranked #6 in D2. They won today and are currently 8-0.

Walsh baseball beats D1 #5 St Ignatius 5-3.
David Ternosky with the big 3 run homer in the top of the 5th.
The winner was Shawn Sullivan (Alabama commit), who was impressive giving up 1 unearned run in 5 innings on 1 hit with 10K.

Ryan Feltner ‘15 has had a nice start of the season for the Colorado Rockies. In 3 starts he has an ERA of 2.81 which is 32nd in MLB. He is also 37th in K and 42nd in WHIP.

Dominic Canzone ‘16 was called up to the Seattle Mariners last week. For a few days Walsh was the only high school in Ohio with 2 active players in MLB. However, Jackson’s Kyle Nicolas was called up today and joins former teammate Dillon Dingler

Impressed how Walsh always has a solid baseball team. I saw they beat Ed’s. Eds hadn’t been competitive for a while and not sure why?

Walsh beat Mayfield in baseball 7-3 this afternoon. Of note Carlos Smith, a RB on the football team, went 3-4 with a Grand Slam and 6 RBI.

The Eagles have had some outstanding players like Max McClellan (South Carolina) and Grant Wilson (Tulane) but haven’t had the overall depth.

Walsh has 10 players currently playing D1 college baseball with 6 who are starters. The starters play for South Carolina, OSU, Xavier, OSU, Kent State and South Carolina Upstate. That doesnt include Tyler Pettorini, who went to Walsh his freshman year. Tyler leads OSU in several categories including HR, RBI, BA.

Hassman will be tough to replace. Grant Conzaman was well respected and there for a long time. I never heard anything but negative comments about Barb Salata. Hassman steadied the ship, and having formerly been administrator and teacher at Walsh knew the inner workings of the school and things have gone great under him.

Besides these 3 State or Nationally ranked teams, the boys track team has had a nice start to the season. They’ve come in 2nd in all 3 of their Invitationals so far. They’ve lost to only Solon in the Austintown Early Bird Invitational and Brunswick in the Avon Lake Invitational and in the Nordonia Relays.
They beat a total of 32 teams in these Invitaitonals.

Baseball stayed at #3 in D2 according to the Coaches Poll. They are ranked below Steele and Hudson.

Softball is #1 in D2 (Tied with Anthony Wayne) in the initial Coaches Poll. On Maxpreps, they dropped to #3 in the State and #2 in D2. They remain undefeated but tied Lake on Monday.

Boys Lacrosse moved up to #5 in D2. They remain undefeated and play Hoban tomorrow.

A couple of my Yappi buddies and I are looking for you pal, don't come in and rejoice your schools' success on this site!

Walsh fans, would you say that the Warriors athletic program (taking all sports into account) is currently the strongest in the state? It's got to be in the top 5 at least, right?

St. Xavier, Moeller, St. Ignatius and Hoban are always very impressive, and for public schools Olentangy Liberty and Marion Local come to mind as being exceptionally strong in multiple sports.

The Boys Track team won their own Walsh Jesuit John Hasenstab Warrior Relays. They had 116 points, Solon was 2nd with 106, and Massillon Perry was 3rd with 74.5.

This was their first win at their home Invitational since 2003. They also avenged a loss to one of the 2 teams to beat them in an Invitational this season by beating Solon.

I'd include Mentor for publics but Walsh is certainly up there and if you're including boys and girls sports hard to say anyone is better.

Excellent question. I wouldn't say top 5 but maybe top 10.

Walsh ranks #7 in the State in OHSAA Team Championships. 3 of the schools ranked ahead of them have won more than 1/2 of their titles in one sport, which reflects more on one sport dominance rather than success of the entire athletic program. Walsh has also won Titles in 10 different sports, which ranks #4 behind only Upper Arlington, Centerville, and Columbus DeSales.
In the last 4 years Walsh has made it to at least the Elite 8 in 6 different sports: Football x 2, Boys Soccer x 2, Girls Soccer x4, Ice Hockey, Baseball x 3, and Softball x 2. Plus Top 10 finishes in Boys Golf and Girls Golf in the last 4 years.
If you change the timeframe to 6 years, you can add Girls Lacrosse and Boys Volleyball to the list.

The argument against is that the Warriors have only won 3 Team State Championships in the last 10 years.

That's very impressive. As far as the Akron Catholic schools go obviously Hoban has the reputation as THE football school and STVM is THE basketball school, but Walsh might have the most success overall.

I would think that if you added up each school in the state's total wins and losses across all sports for the year and compared percentages, WJ would be at or near the top.

I kind of thought they'd take a couple of steps backwards after Kaczmar retired. But that hasn't happened. From what I understand, they are incredibly loaded with pitchers. If they don't win the D2 state championship it will either be because their hitting isn't quite good enough (it is just ok, but definitely their weak spot) or one of their pitchers has a bad game where they can't find the strike zone (and they have a few that are susceptible to this). But the move down to D2 is really going to help them come tournament time. Their only obstacles are public schools. Having said that, there are some really tough D2 public schools. So while it will be easier to win vs previous years when they were in D1, it is still no easy and certain task.

I didn’t realize how many public schools were in the new D2. Walsh, Toledo St John, and Columbus St Charles are the only privates.

The pitchers are really carrying the team so far. After 8 games they’ve only given up 4 earned runs for an ERA of 0.538 with 3 shutouts.
