St Ignatius Football 2021

PD isn't my paper. And those guys don't know about the state as a whole or the local teams. Many on here know way more than them

If you are using media rankings to try to sway people , you already lost. Especially after 1 game. What a goof ?
Let me get this straight. The Plain Dealer, one of the largest newspapers and media outlets in the country, doesn't cover Mentor and their sports writers don't know what they're talking about regarding football? And nobody cares what is in the PD's high school sports sections? Is that it? Maybe you could use a drink. And again, please show respect for Ignatius by taking your psychobabble to a Mentor thread or perhaps use PM. But, you've gone way too far.

Freshmen score:

Ignatius 42
Mentor 21

Cats with nice talent on offense especially.
Offensive skill players were very impressive. Lot of talent and depth. The QB looked excellent - first 3 passes were all on the money balls that went for touchdowns. Multiple fast, athletic RBs and a very good crew of WRs.

The defense had some athletes but seemed to still be figuring things out. Lots of Mentor receivers running around uncovered.

Not sure if anyone else is having trouble with the stream. Mine finally kicked right back in at the lost punt.

Punt fumble - How can they call it for Ignatius and then 30 seconds later reverse it and call it recovered for Mentor?

If it weren’t for sloppy play on special teams Ignatius would have won tonight.

I was at the game. The DBs on this team are not as fast as previous teams.

I sat on both sides. The Ignatius fans were clearly louder than the Mentor fans.

Yeah I don't buy that. Mentor made plenty of mistakes as well. Missed a pick 6. Did the stupidest 2nd and 2 play call from the iggy 4 which resulted in an int instead of a very possible TD drive. . Fumble the ball while killing the clock to give iggy a very short field to get a td late etc And our 2nd half coaching was pitiful.

Before the kickoff return for a td, our special teams was pitiful. Gave us 2 or 3 short fields by not being ready for the kick or simply not going to catch it... One of the times we got pinned, snow threw an int under pressure to give iggy yet another short field

I didn't see either team looking like state title contenders either

But at least I won't have to hear from the guy saying Ignatius would beat us soundly ?

My impression of Ignatius remains unchanged. Compared to previous years of this game, I wasn't very impressed at all. Then again I wasn't impressed by Springfield either

Ignatius beat Mentor soundly but unfortunately beat themselves to give the game away.

Didn’t catch the game. Did any of the younger kids get snaps?
Spellacy played FS for a few qtrs and Martin had one carry at RB. Oh, and he proceeded to go for a TD.

Kid needs to be a huge part of the offense. 2 weeks of watching the offense try but with little speed. Outside of Lenihan.

PDC did you get some local food before the game ?

May be time for Coach Kyle to think outside the "tradition" box and make a couple of
very difficult decisions. You are correct no longer 1990's - time to think 2021/2022 and beyond.
have to take the shots, it does not look like it would hurt.

The odd part is, and time will tell, I'm not sure R1 is very spread apart. I suspect Medina and Ed's are top 2 in talent, Mentor and Stow prob 3 and 4. But, I think there is enough parity that the 16 of 17 teams that make it will be fairly closely clustered in "talent". So, having said that, make some freaking decisions to use talent the next 8 weeks rather than upper class devotion. Just do it

From a neutral "no skin in the game" person here are a few takes I had from the game.
1. I loved the electricity I felt during the game. It was intense and I enjoyed the great atmosphere.
2. First half the long TD that Ignatius had 3 players around it and the Mentor WR outleaped them and scored on was big.
3. second half Iggy had 3 or 4 drives in a row that they got a big chunk run on first down, only to be brought back due to holding. So 3-4 drives all started first and 20. Those were killers.
4. Iggy's timeout to go for 2: not the best use of a timeout considering the play they called was not good.
5. Mentor with a HUGE pick 6 drop!
6. Ignatius' kicker has a booming leg. They/he should have kicked every kickoff out of the end zone. Huge mistake and great TD return. Probably cost Ignatius the game. That is mostly on coaching IMHO. They had ALL the momentum.
7. Week 1 the game I was at, every 15 minutes or so they would stop the game and announce "hydration break". I never heard that once or saw that in this game. Did I miss that. If they didn't have them, that is not good. Hopefully they did and I just missed them. The PA system is hard to hear there to me.
8. Ignatius clearly made some big time adjustments at half. They did outplay Mentor by quite a bit in the second half. IMHO. If you are not a fan of their staff, that would be something good to acknowledge.
9. the dropped punt by Ignatius. Who really recovered it? We may never know. But when the head official signaled Ignatius ball, then all of a sudden it was Mentors ball. That makes things rough. And if I'm not mistaken, Mentor scored 1-2 plays later on a bomb. Let's all assume and hope they got that right.
10. The second down and about 2 or 3 yard near the goal line reverse pass. Wow. That could have cost Mentor the game. That call was a shocker to me. But if it had worked the coach would have looked like a genius. But wow!

I'm sure there are many more plays and things that occurred that could be analyzed. Bottom line for me: I saw a real nice game, at a very nice venue, with a very good atmosphere, with 2 good teams. Both have a lot to clean up and both, barring major injuries, will be better and peaking at the end when it really matters. My thanks goes out to the Ignatius and Mentor kids that played their guts out in a fun to watch rivalry game in very tough humid conditions. Good luck to both teams going forward!
