Ma

Spellacy played FS for a few qtrs and Martin had one carry at RB. Oh, and he proceeded to go for a TD.

Kid needs to be a huge part of the offense. 2 weeks of watching the offense try but with little speed. Outside of Lenihan.
Lenihan.(y)

Cats JV looked good against Mentor.

Martin once again made great plays.

Time for some of these young Cats to move up and see some time on Varsity.

The JV is odd in that they have few #s overall but a lot of talent. (And size at key positions)

I'm not suggesting the seniors move to the bench. Just mix in the younger kids more.
I wonder if the low numbers is aiding their decision to not mix in much? Either fearing injuries or hitting the weekly minutes limit if playing both levels? I dont know

I’m not sure how much of this was magnified by shorter than usual players in Mentor’s secondary, but the Ignatius receivers (and tight end) looked so big out there. What they lack in speed, the team makes up in size. I was surprised the offense didn’t try to keep it simple and take advantage of their heights more often. A fade/jump ball in one on one coverage in the corner of the end zone would’ve been very difficult for Mentor to defend against Vollmer. Not sure why they wouldn’t go that route on the two point conversion.

Lots of downfield passing, which doesn’t seem to fit into the strength and personnel.

This team will be at its best when they stick with relying on a good defense, Lenehen in the run game, using their big targets in a more simplified passing offense, and then mixing in some of the younger kids.

I respect that Ignatius figured out how to adjust their defense and be aggressive. It changed the game. Mentor’s defense stayed put and had very few blitzes and pressure from the linebackers. It was a big mistake.

This has been a recurring problem over last few years *not adjusting gameplans and play calling to the guys on the field*. It continues, and I don't understand the outright stubborness

If you look at the history of the football team, you can see that, very often, the players who start the season are not necessarily the players who finish. There have been significant changes during the season. For example, in the past few years, the qb who played the first few games is not the one who finished. Even last year, Pfaff did not start the season; Alexander didn't start his a couple seasons before. We have seen this at other positions also. The big difference is that in many previous years, the end of the season schedule was tougher than the first part. Now, every game is against a premier team. I expect that the younger players will get their shots, and that some of the seniors might lose their starting positions.

I didn't realize Ignatius brought a number of juniors down to play on the JV. I wondered where the bigger kids came from- now I know.

Sounds like us with our inept special teams (outside of field goal kicks) and crappy defensive coaching which leads to bad fundamentals

Great offense and coaching on that side has carried us

Agree.

One point of major concern was Mentor getting pressure sometimes with just 3 guys. Very impressed the Cardinals front 3.

Snow is a good QB. He made some very nice throws. He also throws the ball up more than I can recall from other Mentor QBs. (But he's young and will only get better)

I
They never led. Were down 21-7 at the half. And despite many mentor mistakes didn't comeback to win. But nice try ?
Ignatius won the 2d half soundly and convincingly 19-7. But for that late punt return, they would have won the 2d half in a 19-0 shutout as well as the game. Chew on that chief.

Mentor won the first half 21-7. If they didn't fumble the ball to give iggy one td and throw a dumb int after a self inflicted special teams errors to give another , the outcome is worse ...

And Ignatius never led

And Ignatius lost because games aren't based on hypotheticals , would haves and maybes.

You were wrong. Suck on that son

But that's not what you say in other posts now is it?

Good points. 3 man front should have been accompanied by more blitzes to rattle the QB early imo. Lots of work for both teams to do though. Think eds and medina are better but both teams will have shots at proving me wrong

Here is next week's opponent - Mt. St. Joseph from Baltimore. Another in the series of out-of-state opponents Ignatius is forced to play. One o'clock next Saturday against a team that won't bring a crowd means Byers will seem empty. Then Euclid and Hoban...

If I'm being honest I can see them beating Euclid, but not winning next week, Hoban or River Rouge.

I'm not sure about River Rouge. They lost 28-7 today. Last year's state championship game:

Now, mlive is reporting that River Rouge won 56-0. Yesterday, the score was reported that they lost 28-7, so who knows.

Mount St. Joseph (Baltimore) is now 1-0, having defeated Saint Mary’s Ryken (Leonardtown MD) 14-10 today.
The Gaels are coming into town on Friday night

Yes, correct, coach needs to break the "tradition" barrier and bring up the talent. New mentality, new angle of attack.
Bold move to be sure, but bold moves win a lot of things. It just can not hurt at this point. In the process you also build
for the future. As I posted -- the 90's are just that - the 90's No time to look back, things change. Time to think 2021/2022
and beyond. We all want to start posting of the wins today and the outlook for a new dynasty in the future.

May be time for Coach Kyle to think outside the "tradition" box and make a couple of
very difficult decisions. You are correct no longer 1990's - time to think 2021/2022 and beyond.
have to take the shots, it does not look like it would hurt.
In both losses, it appeared to me the main issue was taking FGs when they had great field position and opportunities for TDs

Actually, normally he takes more FG chances than I have seen the first 2 weeks. There are times he has gone on 4th that have usually been FG chances in past

Against Springfield, when they were up 20-10 in the 4th qtr, they were 1st n goal at the 5 I think and should have had the KO punch.

Wildcats, can one of you enlighten me on where home field has been for the Wildcats as far back as you know? Obviously it has been Byers for a while, but where did they play before that?
