St Ignatius Football 2021

Some valid perspectives from posters above in this thread. A close loss on the road to a top team in the state week 1 shouldn't necessarily be that alarming. That said, I think some posters that largely or only follow football don't realize how spoiled we Ignatius fans are with success in other sports. As CatFan noted in the game thread, football is probably now near the bottom of programs at the school in terms of recent success. I'd likely put it ahead of only wrestling and bowling (perhaps these three sports have some demographic drivers in common vs sports where Ignatius is now excelling).

For the old timers, some fun game film to reminisce. 1986 Freshman Holy War - Pickens, Ruddy, Jaeckin, et al in their salad days.

Of course we're spoiled. Isn't that the nature of sports, especially successful sports? Even HS football where it's kids, especially new kids every season. I'll admit I tend to forget these are kids at times.

I also agree that the football program is way down now in the pecking order of Ignatius sports, and that's a shame.

It's just not easy to go from high expectations, to moderate expectations, to no expectations. It seems that's where we are at.

And having talked to Kyle at his camp and at my son's practice, his expectations don't seem to have changed.

I can only hope, seriously hope that the team never sees these posts.
I would estimate that 90% of the team has hopes and dreams of playing at college if not further.
They play for Ignatius because in many cases football may be there only route to the top. The team is ready and willing,
the team has talent, the team is ready to win. Last game at worst only exposed a few weaknesses which will be fixed.
Please do not tell me or post for the team to see that their head couch that they would run through a wall for has taken
and accepted a mediocre outlook for the season. Not the speech you give to your troops going into battle. If in fact
this program is near the bottom then EVERYONE has to pull together and put it back in it's rightful place --
Which is at the very top. That's why the kids (soon to be college men) proudly play for St Ignatius

You clearly need to brush up on your reading comprehension skills.

I typed this: "And having talked to Kyle at his camp and at my son's practice, his expectations don't seem to have changed."

I pointed out that while outsiders see the program as having slipped, he certainly doesn't see it that way.

You're obviously a parent of a current player, so I get your reaction.

Their only path to the "top"? What is the top? End of the day, academics are the path to the top, so I am a bit confused by this take, especially at SIHS.

Am I an sweetie for fearing that Zinger will get tired of waiting for the old man to retire and take the head coaching job at a top notch school that needs a young dynamic coach?

I thought the same thing. This isn’t Glenville. These football players at Ignatius have a great education and family support. They will have many opportunities for success in life that had nothing to do with football.

I’ve had that thought, but ultimately think RF truly loves the school and program and would be very unlikely to leave.

As an aside, X's Specht dealt with the same conundrum; it ultimately worked out to both X's and Specht's benefit that he chose to stay a bit longer as an assistant coach at his alma mater. Is RF an alum?

He is an alum, and a part of the 2001 championship team. Here he is in a memorable game:

I will be polite. Nothing wrong with my reading skills, You followed one sentence with another linking
the subject and the thought together. --- there now that's polite.

I do however stand by the remainder of post.

You don't need to be polite. I've been on this forum since 2001. I don't care what you or anyone thinks of what I type.

It's past due. Chico is revered by all Ignatius alum, so I'm sure this will be blasphemy. He needs to think about hanging it up. Sorry. He may still have the fire, but in most cases, he's the Great Grandfather the players never knew. It's tough to relate to kids that are 55 years your junior. It's worked for a long time at Iggy, times are changing. Sooner or later all Great men have to face the music. It would be better for Coach Kyle to go out on his terms than on the schools.

I'm 74, Chico is 70. I've noticed, besides the obvious physical deteroration, there a subtle but steady decline in my mental capabilities. It started when I turned 70. I realize everyone is different, but you can make general statements. So I say it's time to take the keys away from Chico, thank him for a job well done, and give him the golden watch, preferably a Rolex since he's earned it.

Why stop there? The man’s earned a Patek.

The only way to the top is athletics? Hm, as an alum please advise

I agree, I have fought with this in my own mind. I loved coach Kyle BOTH as a teacher and coach, he is an amazing man. But, I think it is time for young blood. To clarify, this diminishes nothing of what the greatest HS coach of all time accomplished

I fully expect Ignatius will beat Mentor soundly this week. I was impressed by them last week. They put up 20 points on a stingy defense. And, until the final minutes, they contained a high octane offense and generally controlled the game for 3 1/2 quarters.

There are no Ignatius fans here who would concur. While these matchups have had some surprises, I dont see an upset here, let alone "soundly"

Let's revisit this Friday night. I saw two good, well coached teams last night that their fans should have confidence in. Just my opinion.

Had Ignatius lost 24-20 to St Xavier the exact same way, i.e., poised to win until the final minutes, everyone would be talking about what a good team they are, how they're gonna have a great season and should beat Mentor. Well, Springfield was just 2 points away from beating X last year and they returned the entire team, and this year they have a couple of new weapons. Although it was a very tough loss, I really think Ignatius did well last week. It just seems like a shame people aren't seeing it that way.

I think this has more to do with looking ahead they see that the majority of their schedule is against teams that are of similar or better caliber than Springfield. Some of these guys are correctly seeing that due to the strength of schedule, they really could only win 3-4 games. Almost every week is brutally tough for them and every win is going to be at a premium.

Yes they always play a tough schedule. Always do. But that doesn't negate my point they would be feeling better if the loss last Friday was to X. I think it's because Springfield hasn't won State and therefore still doesnt have a big, well respected name amongst the elite programs yet.

Definitely a valid point. I think Ignatius fans would be reacting differently if Springfield had more name recognition and a couple titles to their name, even if it’s not necessarily rational.

For the record , Ignatius can beat Mentor . I just don't see them crushing us or solidly handling us like outside fan said above. I do think Ignatius fans are panicking way too quickly
