What is the goal/expectations for your school's football program?

Based on your impression, what is the goal/expectations of your football program from your BOE/Admin

So I had this conversation with someone in my local community recently and I figured I would put this out there to see what others say. What are the expectations of your football program from your admin, BOE and community in general?

I can only answer for the community......Bare minimum in a year you are down: Regional Finals.

Success is a blessing, and a curse, in that if you do not make it to State it is seen as a failed season. While it is not fair, it is reality.

Think the BOE would define a good season as win most of your games most of the time. Be competitive in the losses. Have a team full of good or great students that are assets to the community.

Coaches would say win conference yearly and compete for regional titles.
 
The program I support have expectations of going into every season and compete for a state title. I firmly believe that high expectations contribute to high achievement and vice versa. Some people would consider those expectations as unreasonable. But, it just how it is. The coaches, administrators, the boys and the community all share in those expectations.

I am a fan of setting multiple season goals each year. Set a few that should be easy to achieve and then set some that are progressively harder. It doesn't do anyone any good to set the singular goal as winning a title just to fall short and the entire season is a failure.

That’s the ultimate goal. Their goals in order are

Make the playoffs
Get 2 home games
Win the region……that’s what coach says every year.
 
I think there are differences in goals and expectations. I heard our coach say that his expectation is for his kids to have the time of their life and learn to be successful. His goals are always the same. Win conference, win region, win state.

For mine IMO contend for the league title and win one or two playoff games. Anything more is icing on the cake.
 
Depends on the school and the area. Before Goodwin came to Marion Local people in the Flyer community were saying why can't we (ML) be as good as Versailles or St. Henry 2 powerhouses at the time. Marion Local fired a relatively good coach (record wise .634 winning pct.) hired another coach who lasted 2 years than hired Goodwin. I think Goodwin and the players expect to win state every year, after the loss to New Bremen in 20 Goodwin and I am paraphrasing said the state title was taken from us and we want it back. I think most fans at ML would not be as disappointed if Marion Local did not win state as much as the coaching staff and the players. Just the reality of the situation. I think Kirtland has the same expectations.
 
The expectation for every program is that you will build young men into successful adults. That is why football is included in the education program. However, you must win more than you lose in order to continue building successful young men. I think the question really is location centric. I think the goal of most programs is to win the conference, make the playoffs, get home field.
 
I would say that in my community, there are three levels of expectations depending on who you are talking to:

1. Some good years, some bad years based on how good the class of kids is
2. Expect to have winning records most seasons, an occasional down season is acceptable
3. Should be competing for league titles and making the playoffs annually

I personally think we are closer to #1. That is a change from 10-15 years ago.
 
Finish 8-2 or better.
Win the league championship.
Host 2 playoff games.
Make a deep playoff run.
When you meet Kirtland or a MAC school … play your hardest and pray a lot.

I could see that more from a coaches viewpoint than a student athlete. 90% of the kids would not know a BOE member from any other person in the community. The AD you would hope for some expectations. Either way you want people who are in the middle they don’t meddle and they don’t completely ignore.

Depends on the size of the school. If you live in a community where everyone knows everyone it's a little different. At some schools kids can tell you who was at the game supporting them and who never comes to games to watch them.

It's like that Marion Local article in the NYT from a few years ago where the pastor asked the players why he didn't see them in church on Sunday mornings and they asked why they didn't see him in the stands on Friday nights.

At some schools it's very clear to the kids.
 
For Aquinas (not Florida) it's just to field a team.

For Louisville (Ohio) it used to be to have a winning season and an NBC crown. Now, it's just to win a game. *Sigh*...
 
A playoff run and a league title. Every 5 years or so it's seems, we make a run at the regional title and a state title game.
 
Akron Coventry historically speaking isn’t a football school. Haven’t had back to back winning seasons since the 90s, before I was alive. Three winning seasons since ‘04. 2-8/3-7 in 2024 will be considered a step in the right direction, but I always hope for better, and that one day Coventry can become a good program that the community can get behind, which I think community support lacked this year. Coventry did have one of their worst seasons in years though.
