Western Buckeye League Playoff Picks & Discussion Thread

Pretty accurate I would say (including the score of the Shelby-Elida game)!
Much appreciated - think I did well MINUS the Riders having a rough night, but throwing for 115+ yards and a game winning 50 yard TD after countless mistakes and errors. 2 fumbles, 1 lost, gave up an onside kick, missed a field goal, about 8 false starts, offsides, PI, holding, 2 turnovers on downs (1 on their own side!) and many, many, many more - That was the Riders worst (as-a-whole, definitely not passing) performance on the season with a 41 yard, nearly 50 in the air TD pass from Aidan Meinerding to Parker Beam (with his 2nd ever catch!!!) on 4th and 20 with 40 seconds left to STILL survive and advance.

Man, I totally forgot that BG uses michiscum’s fight song for its own. Thank God both times I’ve watched Defiance play them in the playoffs, we have shut them out and I’ve only had to hear that effing song once each game. Bulldogs dominated both lines of scrimmage but BG hurt itself as well with numerous penalties and bad punting and two interceptions. It wasn’t like Defiance racked up a crapton of yards. A 38 point differential doesn’t exactly equate to a difference of about 150 total yards. Of course, the running clock for the entire second half helped that. But I don’t know if BG ran more than two or three plays on the Defiance side of the field, so Defiance had short fields all game. I forget what BG averages rushing the ball but Defiance held it to 69 yards, 110 total, and 3 first downs. Of note, Zipfel set the new record for career passing yards at Defiance and according to the newspaper article can set career records for attempts and completions next week - they are going to need him to have his best game of the season next week for sure.

As for other WBL scores, a little surprised that it sounded like St. Marys needed a long pass at the end to pull off the win, and Elida hung with Shelby for at least a half. I think O-G can keep it closer than Elida did, but that's gonna be a tough game for the Titans. Good for Bath getting its first playoff win since 2003 I think - does it have a shot against the #1 seed next week? I don't know if Greeneview has ever even played in a regional final game. A little surprised Celina was handled that badly, but most WBL teams have been so up and down this season and it was down this week I guess.

Bath could very well win Region 20.

Impressive athletic campus @ Defiance. I agree, I noticed that Defiance came out Physical & FLYING to the football. Bg losing starting center first play from scrimmage didn't help. Plus having # 7 out on both sides of the ball since week 10. But that's ball. Score at half 31-0 was almost the same in 97' 35-0 Bulldogs. But unlike 97' Bulldogs added 7 in the 2nd half. BG's frosh. Q.B. hung in there. Defiance # 55, # 11 can ball. Coach Cooper got to work on that onside kick after half. lololol

Defiance Bulldogs 2-1 vs. Bobcats in playoffs.

According to the newspaper, this also breaks an all-time series tie, at 18-17-2 now, I think? These teams played a lot before the 70s. I wish they hadn’t played in 2020, that was one of Defiance’s worst teams ever and was not worthy of a playoff designation.

I was really hoping Defiance could get matched up with Rocky River in the second round - I realize it won big tonight but that's probably a winnable game, considering it lost to Bay last week and Defiance has fairly easily beaten Bay twice in the last four years. But now it's another state power in round 2...A few notes on Defiance: It is now 3-0 in home playoff games, and it doesn't seem possible but this is the first time Defiance has made the playoffs in three straight seasons. Also, I was looking over some stuff and I could be wrong, but according to my documents - this win got Defiance back to an all-time record of .500. It would be nice if someone from the school could verify or refute that.

Is there any site that post stats from the games? Doesn’t seem WBL has a site like most of us do in this area, we have game and conference scores stats usually going back for years. Just interested in seeing some of the kids stats in your league and the games Swbl vs in playoffs.

wblsports.com is your savior. Although I don't think it has week 10 stats updated yet. Scroll down to find stats through week 9.

Records from last week. Pretty good records.
7-0: MAC_CrazyFan, StateChampion2012, Stirred Not Shaken, GoRiders!!, Nash, and tucson
6-1: ctown14, Clase8821, 933York
5-2: TiGgEr3, Moonlight SOS, Just, LICKING COUNTY FAN
4-3: PantherSkin

We have five games next week:
(7-4) Defiance at Benedictine (9-2)
(7-4) Wilmington at Wapak (11-0)
(9-2) St. Marys at Tippecanoe (11-0)
(6-5) O-G at Shelby (11-0)
(6-5) Bath at Greeneview (11-0)

Tough task with three WBL teams playing at undefeated teams and a fourth playing at a state power. We could very well be down to picking only one team next week.

Hey there! Greeneview is a bit undersized but very physical. Would this give Bath problems? I am not too familiar with the Wildcats but would appreciate any insight. Thanks.

Just a heads up, the Greeneview football stadium is not at the high school. It is by the middle school. The address is as follows:

Don Nock Field
69 North Limestone Street
Jamestown 45335

The WBL is just a PHYSICAL league.
Personal example, St Marys fan edition - St Marys ran well on them (Wing T, multiple BIG dudes, basically never-throw, run-it-at-you-you-can't-stop-it definition of physicality football), but St Marys (9-2 D3) ran it well on basically everyone this year. Bath didn't get completely owned at all.
For a more general example, they're a AVERAGE running defense in a league where the teams MOSTLY just want to push you around with physicality. Old school ball. Bath is the only d5 team in the WBL (mostly D3).
My answer would be probably not. Watching them play my team, who ONLY really wins with physicality, they hung in there. They can be as physical as anyone in D5 R20.

Benedictine over Defiance, 35-7
Wapak over Wilmington, 35-7
Shelby over O-G, 42-14
Bath over Greenview (game to watch!!) 42-38
BIAS INCOMING, PROBABLY TO RUIN MY PERFECT RECORD
St Marys over Tippecanoe, 28-21

Bold call but Tipp offense looks as good or not a little better than Wapak same with defense

So what don't i know about Greensview that everyone is picking them? They have not played close to the schedule Bath has. Greensview has played D5,6,7. Bath has played D3,4,5.

If SM can go out and set the tone early, especially physically, you have a good at winning. Go back and watch Celina play Tipp last year. Tipp was out of the game after Celina blocked a punt for TD to make it 14-0 midway through the first.

Feeling pretty confident in the Benny, Wapak, and Shelby wins. Shelby-OG is perhaps the least confident of those three, but I don't think OG will be able to match the firepower of Shelby. The most OG has scored this season is 34 points; Shelby has scored at or above that 8 times this season. I think Tipp-St Marys and Bath-Greeneview are the games that might be more competitive. I think Tipp will win by two touchdowns. I'm still impressed by Tipp's win over Bellbrook. Really no idea about Greeneview; being an undefeated #1 seed is not nothing, just choosing Bath because they've been so fun to follow this season and I don't want that to end.

Benedictine (9-2)- Good season Bulldogs 35-14

Wapak (11-0)- Easiest pick 35-7

(9-2) St. Marys - Just a hunch 21-14

Shelby (11-0)- Titans D not enough for the Whippet O 28-7

(6-5) Bath- Wins a shootout over a good Rams team. 42-41
