Western Buckeye League Playoff Picks & Discussion Thread

If SM can go out and set the tone early, especially physically, you have a good at winning. Go back and watch Celina play Tipp last year. Tipp was out of the game after Celina blocked a punt for TD to make it 14-0 midway through the first.
I don’t understand how you can’t seem to realize that last year was last year and this Tipp team is miles better than last years team. Tipp will be the most physical team that St. Mary’s has played outside of Wapak and they are so much more explosive on offense than they were last year. Evidenced by a Soph. QB who has thrown for 2,400 yards and 36 TDs vs 6 INTs. Through 11 games Tipp has scored 466 points, last year through 11 games they had scored 368, nearly 100 less points.
Also the Braylon Gabes kid is the best high school football player I’ve ever watched in person, he beat Tipp pretty much on his own. St. Mary’s doesn’t have a guy like that kid.

@GoRiders!! besides your bias to pick St. Mary’s, I’m curious on your thoughts about Tipp and this game in general, if you can through a non biased lens
I love how you constantly ask people for their unbiased picks and reasoning, when every time you talk about Tipp, you have to speak around the proverbial tipp that is lodged in your throat.

Nobody cares about Tipp like you do, congrats pal I hope they all love you for your unrequited ramblings on the internet.

According to Drew Pasteur Bath has the #1 SOS in D5. Greenview is #86
Jeff Sagarin has UCLA with the toughest strength of schedule in college football. I think strength of wins is a much better indicator. With that being said I think Greenview will have a lot of trouble containing Bath’s quarterback and hopefully that will be enough for them to get the win.

Bath lost to a very average D7 team. With the exception of their Defiance win they don’t reall have a quality win.
That "average" D7 you are referring to is a MAC school who would win this region if they were in it. Don't believe me? Look at the teams in this region who matched up against MAC schools and what the outcomes were. Anna over Indian lake 37-0 , Versailles (before injuries started mounting up) over Milton Union 33-0.

No, V beat NB 18 - 17, highly doubtful NB would not win this division.

That's what I was saying. They would win it if they were in it. Bath is playing better now than they were 1st game also.
You asked why people are picking Greenview instead of Bath? When Bath obviously played a tougher schedule. My point is yes they played a tougher schedule, but with the exception of Defiance, they didn’t beat any of the teams that made their schedule tougher. I will be rooting for Bath, I think the future looks bright there, I just think they lose this one.

I didn't ask any anything. I was responding to a post that called NB an average D7 which they are not.

According to Fantastic50.net the lowest rated team on Bath's schedule is rated higher than every team on Greenview's except 2. There's a reason Bath wasn't winning those games lol

I'll oblige. Completely level, neutral observer tier take.
It will depend on how this thing starts. If SM gets the long ground drives and finishes them, and manages to get a turnover, bounce of the ball, what have you, we have a ball game. If Tipp scores early and often it will be very hard for SM to win. Not impossible, but Wapak took advantage of some early SM coverage busts and didn't make any mistakes. Hard to win like that. I'd imagine it's 50% it goes something like the Wapak game, with Tipp up 10-21 most of the 2nd half, and 50% it goes like the SM games against Perkins, the really good recent Van Wert teams, where it's anybody's game.

I have no dog in the fight, though I know a few Bath people, like Panther said I don't care about SOS if you lose, win those games yes. Kirtland year in year out does not have a quality SOS but they consistently win state titles. As for this game I would think it could be high scoring and entertaining. Big week for the WBL, some tough games good time to "show" out.

Benedictine – It really does suck to have to face big city private schools in the playoffs.
Wapak – easily.
Tippecanoe – it sounds like Tipp is really good. SM could put up a fight but not enough.
Shelby – again, I can see O-G keeping it closer than people think but they don’t have enough firepower.
Bath – I went back & forth on this numerous times, as the very last pick of all the statewide playoff games...eff it, I’m going with Bath. I was originally set on Greeneview, but I don’t want to pick only one out of five WBL teams to win.

Defiance down 7-6 after the first quarter. Nice long drive from its own 15 resulted on a TD and 4th & goal from the 8 but then for some dumb reason went for two and missed, then gave up a 73-yard TD run. And now Defiance has to punt for the first time just into the 2nd quarter.

St. Marys tied at 7 halfway through the 2nd quarter and just received a kickoff from Tipp's own 20, must have been a penalty.

St. Marys punts with 3:30 left before half.

Defiance gave up a methodical drive for TD, then threw a pick into the end zone on 4th down in what essentially was a punt. Losing 14-6.

I didn't see how but Tippecanoe scored with under a minute left to head into halftime up 14-7.

Tipp runs rollout out routes and slants - occasional deep post - hand-offs and draws. Reminds me a lot of 2022 Van Wert minus they probably wouldn't contend with that year's Glenville. But I didn't expect that of VW either so 🤷

Benedictine ends the half at midfield to lead Defiance 14-6. I believe Defiance gets the ball on the second half kickoff but the game is trending toward not being able to stop Benedictine, and while Defiance is getting a decent amount of 5-8 yard gains on the ground, there are too many no gains/losses and incomplete passes to get more points.

I didn't hear all the stats but it sounds like SM might have around 100 yards, Tippecanoe more. SM has one more punt, and both teams have had 40-50 penalty yards. Tippcanoe is better on 3rd down conversions.

It's always interesting that these big city private schools can attract such great football talent year after year and then come out here with a 30-member marching band.
