This game was a fitting end to the Reds season. It was a perfect microcosm of the season from an offensive standpoint. Tons of runners left on base as a result of horrible hitting with chances to drive guys in. Upgrading the offense is an absolute must in the offseason. Jocketty needs to get out of his fantasyland where he thinks he has plenty of talent on the offensive end. It's simply not the case, i don't know how much more evidence he needs. Losing Scott Rolen will be a huge bonus on offense.

Cueto was lost in the postseason; Votto was a shell of himself. As long as they return to form, I'm not too worried about the Reds next year.

While this result was very disappointing, there are many things to be excited about in the Reds future. The bullpen will be absolutely stacked next year and i think the result of this series will force Jocketty to make some moves to give this offense a shot in the arm. It's still a pretty young team and many good years are still ahead of the team. The reds are still climbing to their apex, nowhere near on the way down.

I think Jocketty should seriously consider dealing Leake in the offseason in some sort of package to get a legit CF. Bring Chapman into the rotation. He's gotta learn how to pitch, but he is fully capable of being an elite starter which would make the rotation phenomenal.

This team is pretty close to world championship material. Just a couple holes to upgrade.

I'm not normally a Dusty basher but maybe it's time to go another direction. His teams always find a way to lose eventually whether it's the WS, LCS, or DCS.

At what point does just making the postseason become unacceptable?

Ryne Sandberg baby! I like Dusty, but you may be right, his postseason record is weak.

John Fay tweeted that Jocketty said he expects all coaches to return next season. Dusty deserves some blame, but if BP runs the bases smarter, Hanigan catches the ball and Rolen makes a play then we aren't having this conversation. He also can't make these guys hit better with RISP. That is all on the players.

Also, who is out there right now that is a better candidate, realistically? Francona is gone, so who else? Dusty has his flaws, but canning a guy after a 97-win season, much of it without his star player, seems a bit extreme. I would probably only extend him one year though and not two.

This is a solid post. I agree.

Someone with the Reds told Daugherty a month ago that the team will likely not bring back Ludwick. IMO, you have to bring him back and hit him cleanup. He was way too valuable to the team this year.

Solid post.

There were some great things this year though, off the top of my head:

1. Jay Bruce continues to get better.
2. Todd Frazier emerged as the third-baseman of the future.
3. Ryan Hanigan became a very dependable catcher.
4. Johnny Cueto became a legit Ace.
5. Mat Latos became an elite #2.
6. Homer Bailey seemingly turned the corner.
7. Bronson Arroyo bounced back from a bad 2011.
8. Zach Cozart proved to be a solid SS, especially for a rookie.
9. The bullpen was very good.
10. Ryan Ludwick became a legit run-producer.

There are more, but those are 10 things to be excited about. It was a good year with a sour end, but the next 5+ years look very promising.

Questionable NOT having Hannigan bunt and move runners to 2nd and 3rd with no outs. That could have blown up into a huge inning. Strike out/Throw out was probably more deflating than the grand slam. But I put that one on Hannigan. He usually gets the bat on the ball. Being at the game, I didn't get to see the pitch well, but he's GOT to at least swing in that situation. That's why they were running...to avoid a ground ball DP.

Shiity end to a really fun season. Have to get a high OPB guy to bat in front of Votto.

Time to hop on team schadenfreude. Go Nats.

I'd like to see the Reds get a legit leadoff hitter and hit BP second.

And yes, I know we joke about me being a Cards fan, but I'm rooting for the Nats so hard right now.

Down by three, why have a guy bunt? You're not playing for a run, you're playing for three. Let a guy who has swung a hot bat during the postseason hit. Bunting is a huge waste of an out. Plus Drew Stubbs was up next.

That's why I said questionable. Could argue either way. I'm moreso blaming Hanigan for looking at the 3rd strike instead of swinging. They were obviously running to avoid a DP.

I couldn't watch at that point, but was listening in my car. They said it was a questionable strike on the radio, but you have to at least foul it off.

It was a good season.

Once again, LF and CF should be offseason focal points. Ludwick will test the waters and may not be back.

Dusty should return next year.

Also, hopefully there is some young starting pitching depth in the minors who can contribute if needed. The Reds were really lucky to avoid SP injuries and ineffectiveness until the postseason. The odds of any team getting 2 straight years of perfect calm at SP is unlikely.

I didn't get to watch either.

I also heard that Latos was rattled by a different strike zone in the big inning. Man, you have to shake that crap off and get lesser players like Blanco and Crawford out. To his credit, he owned it.

I can't put anything on Latos. He was a gamer the entire last half of the season including playoffs. Even with a healthy Cueto, I would have felt more confident with Latos starting today anyway.

With a healthy Cueto, there is no Game 5 for Latos to pitch.

I'm as confident of that as I am that the Bengals would have won the Super Bowl if not for an injury to Carson Palmer and UC would have won the national title if not for Kenyon Martin's broken leg. :(

Who will not be back next year?
Rolen for sure
Cairo for sure
Who else? I am not sure of the contracts of guys like Valdez and Navarro.
I would like to see Ludwick back, I think we have the option on him but many people have said he will not be back, dont understand why??
I know there will be more moves but Rolen and Cairo are for sure. Anyone else?
