St.V-St.M 2022

Everyone who wants a change offensively is going to be sorely disappointed if this is all true. Cistone means Dallas stays as OC.
Ugh.....

This is beyond frustrating. I simply cannot get past the last game against Dover and the BRAINLESS decision to pass on the fateful 3rd down play.

The Irish had that game all but won. Dover was on their heels trying to withstand St. V's rushing attack. 3rd and 5 at the plus 35 with 2:00 to go.
Even the Dover You Tube announcers were saying at that point in the game, it was 4 down territory.

If you run the ball twice, the WORST position you will be in is giving the ball back to Dover - but the game is still tied and Dover has to go 65 yards in under a minute. (They were out of timeouts).

But nooooooooo - the coaches thought they were smarter than any of us. Let's put the season in the hands of a green, inexperienced sophomore in the biggest game of his life against a savvy veteran senior led defense..,..

Coach - bluntly what were you thinking? You are in a position where you are supposed to be smart enough NOT to take those risks....

And now you want to get re upped?
Seriously?

This is the right hire. For now.
I tend to agree with you. He will bring a sense of stability and familiarity back to the program; which has been lacking over the past couple of years. And for all of those who wanted the Irish to run the ball against Dover, I can assure you that if he is his father's son, you can bet he WILL run the ball if put in that same position!!!

I

It’s really not.

Makes me wonder how much undermining of the previous coach was taking place?

You sound like a disgruntled coach.
Why would there have to be undermining when obviously the previous coach was not up to par? His team went 4-7 this year and if the bracket wasn’t expanded due to Covid, they wouldn’t have made the playoffs at all for the second time since he was hired. In the years when they did make the playoffs, they were among the lowest seeded teams in the brackets both times. There was no undermining needed. He had plenty of talent to work with and he had no clue what to do with it.

I remember a presser of John Cistone's back in the day.....

"Three things happen when you pass the ball, and two of them are bad..."

I’m not a coach…and I support the coaching change.

That being said…Cistone is 39-42 as a head coach…and had to forfeit wins as a head coach because of player eligibility issues.

The school should have taken their time with this hire. Most times the easy choice isn’t the right choice.

39-42….

Well, as much as I wasn't a fan of the rushed selection process, the decision has been made and it is time to turn the page.

Does anyone have an inkling of what kind of team that Cistone will have next season as far as returnees? And will he have any input into who will appear on the 2022 schedule?

I wonder if Coach Cistone taps into his past and sees if Revere is interested.

GOt the name, probably has a good 3-4 years in him, and then pass it on to someone that will be a bit green under the collar now, but will be on the staff and learn. Who knows, it could work out. I would tend to think things have changed pretty drastically sine the days of Coach John Cistone, not only the game itself, but the politics with the Boosters and all of the rest of it. And don't forget King James...........

I 100% hope he can turn things around, but am very disappointed in the hastiness. I think they could have explored a little more, unless they had already done this. Possibly the decision to remove his predecessor was made, after the Hoban game. GO IRISH!!!

A big question is will this hire placate the slew of alumni football players who have sons ready for high school In September. Hoban and Walsh have been recruiting them hard. The Dads played for old Cistone in his last years. That may be a negative as he did not go out in a blaze of glory.

Another alum player told me they could hire Donald Duck for all he cared if he could bring in the kids to beat their rivals.

Alumni kids alone won’t be sufficient to beat the rivals. Hoban isn’t using CYO kids anymore, Walsh moving the same having a bigger draw.

Of course they aren’t but you don’t want to lose your legacy kids to your rivals.

Agree Hoban has built its success with non CYO kids, but it hasn’t stopped them from scouting and handpicking the ones they deem good enough.

I really wish him well and hope that he can return the program to prominence. It would be a great story.

That being said, I am skeptical. He's a 59 year old coach with a sub-.500 career record taking over a program whose varsity, JV and freshman team (28 players) were all sub-.500. Their main rival is getting the bulk of the top area football talent and their second biggest private school rival is improving in leaps and bounds. To re-establish that program he has to do something that makes kids the top kids and their families want to go to SVSM and I'm not sure he's that guy. I hope to hell I am wrong.

If they'd have done a search and come to the conclusion after screening and interviewing candidates that he was THE guy, I'd be a little less skeptical but the haste with which this went down indicates they they may have taken the easy way out. Like I said, I hope I am wrong in this one.

Exactly. All this just leads me to believe that they simply no longer care about the football team competing at the highest level. The AD is a former basketball teammate of Lebron. He made a hire that will excite the people with money - the older crowd of STV/STVM alums. It’s a name that you can sell to this crowd, and yet you don’t have to fork up the money for a competitive coach that will legitimately resonate with the modern players. They made a quick internal hire that saves them time, money in effort, so they can continue focusing on basketball.

They’re going all-in as the premiere basketball school in Akron. It’s a shame. It’s a football program that has a storied history in the state of Ohio, and this is a lazy hire that will not allow them to compete as they have in the past.

I’d like to be wrong but I doubt it. STVM has been relegated to the worst private school in football in the area. Would’ve honestly been better re-hiring Wattley. But, they’re all about appearances and don’t want to pay top-dollar because they have no interest in being a top-tier team.

I think you forget or were not aware the AD also played football all four years for SVSM. He went to Fairmont State on a football scholarship. So I don’t believe at all they’ve given up on football.

I do agree this seems the easiest hire. When Terry Cistone retired from Revere what initally brought him to SVSM? Working for health insurance since he’s too young for Medicare? Did he have it in the back of his mind the possibility of taking over the football program? Was the position “Director of Compliance“ created for him? Never had that before to my knowledge. Lots of questions here.

Walsh’s freshman QB and varsity starter in a year or two played CYO football
Yes but they are the exception, not saying there aren’t good CYO players cause there are. I mean look at Walsh baseball/ girls soccer or even StV basketball, in order to be competitive and compete now a days you need to have a larger pull than the local Catholic grade schools.

Can I just say, even as a Catholic school alum myself, the idea that we’re discussing who STVM should hire so they can properly recruit the area… it’s just wrong? For years I shrugged off public school people that complained about it, but I mean I get it. I’m not ignorant enough to believe that Catholic schools are alone in recruiting, but this isn’t what it’s supposed to be about.

I would feel better even if the schools could even argue that they have a proper Catholic education to kids and sought to spread the Catholic faith through education. But I don’t feel like these schools do that even. I know when I was at STVM, I would not say I received proper catechesis.

Plus, my parents actually paid for tuition all four years, yet I can’t even go to my alma mater for a game without a multitude of elderly STVM alums pressuring me to donate money. Hey, guys, how about you go ask for donations from the students that were given vouchers to go to the school for free?

Sorry about the rant. My kids will go to public school and go to PSR classes. The whole system has me jaded.

We could debate this subject all day. I have four children that went through the Catholic system. The Best investment in my lifetime. The foundation they were taught has paid huge dividends in their preparation for college and life.

Congrats to Seniors STVM RB George Lindberger (Youngstown State) who rushed for 1300 Yards in 2021 finishing his Career with 3000 yards and his teammate since 6th Grade (St Sebastian’s) 6-6 315 OT Tariq Montgomery (Marshall) for being named the top 5 in their position for the state of Ohio. STVM ☘️ ? high Academic Honor Roll. Congrats to these fine young men as they head off to college.

The Irish are blessed with one of the State’s Top Atheltic trainers in Brian Knight. This new state of the art Atheltic training facility in the Cosgrove building will be incredible. The Irish have also updated their huge weight room in the Costigan’s training Center with all new Rogue equipment. There more improvements in the planning stages.

Why take your time if you knew all fall who you wanted? It's not as though he wasn't already there.
