gotta try to beat Hoban and Walsh with the players who don't want to go to Hoban or aren't good enough to get recruited by Hoban.
gotta deal with lofty expectations, a brutal schedule and the basketball program bringing in kids from multiple area codes and states, most of whom just want to play basketball.
tough, tough gig in the current environment.
If you know anything about the Catholic HS programs in Akron…it’s very cyclical. All 3 programs have gone through tough times in the last ten years.

The key here is to hire the right coach. Look at what Nick Alexander has done in his 3 years at Walsh…and it was a tough, tough, gig there as well.

Bingo, FF1.

A successful HS FB program is like any other successfully run business in America. Nothing will ever be perfect all the time, so the guidelines you establish for your team/company will be tailored to what you see as what is in its best interest. Adjustments will be needed from time to time.

But the key to success will be putting the right people in place who will have the fortitude to stay the course when the inevitable hiccups happen. And you mostly must stay true to the program and realize that you are never going to keep everyone happy.

I agree that it is cyclical, but Hoban's cycle (much to my chagrin) is a historic cycle and includes something we've not seen before, what is essentially an AAU type youth program.

correct. Hoban now has an official youth AAU program when it was already getting the best players in the city (and the more than occasional transfer from 10-50 miles away). I can agree that it's been cyclical historically, but not that there's ever been one program doing what Hoban has done or that one coach winning a handful of playoff games at Walsh means the code has been cracked. It's Walsh!

Walsh also took Hoban to double OT this year on their field. AAU program must be struggling to develop quarterbacks as the leader of The Armour and QB coach of many of the top QB’s in NE Ohio has already offered a top QB at another school the QB job at Hoban next year.

I think it is in its infancy so I am not sure it has produced players for them yet. It's just in addition for the future to the community relationships they've built. I'm hoping Walsh has cracked the code. We'll find out in the next couple of weeks if week 3 was a fluke.

The Maendler guy that used to coach at Hudson?

I’ve always thought, give a coach 3 years, to get his program running. St.V seemed to be headed in the right direction, given the schedule they play. Then came year 4. What a disappointment. The turnovers and especially the penalties, reflect shortcomings in the coaching staff instilling team discipline. I 100% agree a change was warranted. I sincerely hope they find the right person for the job. Go Irish !!!

Whether it plays out with Terry, this is more than likely how it plays out. They won’t got the Hoban, McKinley Massillon route of giving a coach an AD position and paying them accordingly. They won’t bring a coach into the building so they are severely restricting their pool of candidates. They are looking for another Boarman situation where they can hire a retired coach, pay him a football stipend and hope and pray they catch lightning in a bottle again. I thought with a new President things might change, but it looks like they will stay the same. Some people up above asked if they are now all in on basketball - from the outside looking in it seems so.
This is no knock on Terry - he is a good coach, but if it comes down this way, it was just an easy way out.

Amen. They don't need a 60 year old coach. I've always though the coach should have a historical connection to the school and Terry fits that bill, but I don't see him building something that will bring kids to SVSM. I'd hope he could assemble guys of the ilk of SVSM assistants of the past like Provie Tomei, Joe Pappano and Larry Naymik, but I'd still rather see a young energetic guy with ties to the community than Revere's retired coach.

If Hoban and WJ recruit well in Nov Dec Jan 2022 it will provide 3 consecutive classes of superior talent. It could take years for the ☘️ to close the gap unless they dummy down the schedule to a D5 level while removing the rivals off the schedule.
I love the open admission of recruiting. Yet Hoban and Walsh are still allowed to be in d2 and Sv perenially disappoints in d3.

No question the last couple of years have been disappointing for the Irish…but “perennially” is a little harsh. 2012 and 2013 State Champions…2014 and 2017 lost in the State Semi Finals. The 2014 loss was to a team that had some kid named Burrow play quarterback for them.

Regarding things being cyclical - I remember the expression that I think has a lot of truth to it "Teenagers buy with their eyes...."

Meaning if you are a 7th or 8th grader (or potential high school transfer) with the talent to play at either Walsh, St. V, or Hoban - the weight room facility at Hoban may be a huge factor in your decision. It can't hurt Hoban's chances of getting the top athletes to stay on top.

Walsh in the process of building a state of the art weight room as well.

Sitting in 3rd place with Talent and weight room amenities Coach Cistone has his hands full. He will have the support of the older alumni and hopefully be allowed to raise funds used STRICTLY for the FOOTBALL program. The program will require more discipline in 2022. Far to many unsportsmanlike penalties and turnovers (PLAY CALLING) in the 2021 season. Coach Cistone is a positive move for the stability of the program and assembling a competent staff top to bottom. Dropping down to D4 would give the Irish ☘️ a real opportunity to compete.
Division isn’t really their choice unless they restrict enrollment.

I won't be happy with the selection process if Terry Cistone is selected as Head Coach.

Sure, he is Irish royalty and it would play well as a homecoming PR. But once you get past the hiring and into the season, what are you left with? I have zero clues if his heart, at 60 years young, would be engaged enough into the program to resurrect it to its former level of success.

I think the first thing you need to take a cold, hard look at is where the program is today, and how it got there. A school with this much tradition should be able to find a suitable alumnus with the drive and desire this program needs.

But I think the Irish will do themselves a huge disservice if they heavily favor only alumni in their search.

I would hope that assistants or former head coaches with proven track records are thoroughly vetted and considered. This program has a crying need for change, and this hire is too important to limit your search parameters so you can facilitate the hire.

Id it's true, I think the fact that he essentially had the job within a day or two of Nickol stepping down tells us all we need to know about the level of commitment to find the right guy. Maybe he's the right guy, but the hastiness of the decision demonstrates a real lack of due diligence.

Has this been announced as official by the school yet? I haven't seen anything like that yet.

Or is it one of those deals that it is a done deal already, just not announced yet?
