Southwest District/State Predictions

Hudson looks to be replacing a couple of graduated seniors from last year. Mulcahey split a 23.28 fly in the medley and Palazzo will go fast in the breast. Clampfer split a 22.08 in the 200 free relay, so they will be in contention if they can find a backstroker in the medley from their large pool of swimmers.

This is an unbiased opinion with me being from the Northwest, but I see St. Francis as the favorite in the Medley and the 2 free. As for the 4, I see it up for grabs with X, Moeller, and Frannies as the favorites. St. Francis could push the medley and the 2 free relay state records if they stack those two relays.. The medley with Sobzcak, Barone, Disalle, and Brodie could be unbelievably fast

What splits do you think they can go?

In the medley, I see Sobczak at a 24.1-24.0, Barone at a 24.5, Disalle at a 23.0 and Brodie pushing a 20.0.. That would put them at a 1:31 low which would be right on that record.. They could easily go faster than this too with a better taper than last year. The 2 free may be a little more difficult with the loss of Gustafson as he was a 20.8 in that relay. They actually beat the state record last year at Districts last year but a slight false start got them disqualified. The relay last year was Brodie, Barone, Disalle, and Gustafson and it will be interesting to see who replaces Gustafson for the 4th but regardless, the other 3 are capable of splitting 20 point.. The only issue is here though that if they do go after these 2 records, they're 400 relay could be hurting and with them being in contention for a team title, they may spread out their faster swimmers

It should be a battle for second. There Centerville may have the edge as they scored 36 points in diving while Moeller didn't have any divers and they have more room to move up in the relays.

Odds are Moeller has someone in the student body who could dive and make probably make a pretty good diver. But, that student just doesn't know he could dive for Moeller, due to lack of getting lack of getting the word out at Moeller. I've seen it before at other schools. Students hear "swim team" enough, they don't consider that diving is part of a swim meet anymore.

Buckeye Dr., and early thoughts on the new coach at St. Francis?

Brent Ransom has stepped into a very difficult situation and has proven to all that he is the right choice for the St. Francis and GTAC programs. He has brought an energy to the program that was sorely lacking last year. He is working them very hard, but that has never been an issue with St. Francis swimmers. They worked very hard last year (actually too hard for them to recover for the district and state meets), but were all trained the same. This year, coach Ransom is teaching proper technique to each individual, which in turn has earned their respect. To say that the Knight Brotherhood is excited about having Coach Ransom is an understatement.

How can you work too hard?

How can you work too hard?

Last year, the philosophy of the head coach was to train the entire team in the same manner. They were trained hard from the first to the last practice. Most teams modify the workouts depending on the time of the season and then taper them for the district and/or state meets. The St. Francis swimmers were trained too much, as they all hit the wall toward the end of January. Their legs never recovered.

Reviewed the results from the 2013 state meet. Good swims from the St. Francis men. The DQ of the 200 free relay at Districts was a tough break for them. In the end, it's a numbers game, need a bunch of guys to make it back and score. I think tapering for some of the Bomber swimmers does not seem to start until after Districts.

I think St. Francis' taper will be extremely different this year and may be more similar to their years before the new district. With the graduation of some of the upper-end swimmers in the district such as Derek Hren, Dietrich Hinesman, Mitchell Delventhal, and Kyle Hopkins, I think it gives them more room to take a chance and do more of a full-taper for state. The top-end of the district outside of the St. Francis swimmers will be weaker in my opinion, and it will definitely be interesting to see what they decide to do when February rolls around.

This year is going to be much different than last year. 4-6 swimmers will probably not be tapered too much for the district meet and save their taper for the state meet. It all depends on the other swimmers in the district though. Last year, the big 4 swimmers for St. I were not tapered for the district meet. They performed much better in Canton than in Bowling Green. This year, St. Francis is swimming at the Big 8 meet and the Viking Invitational, so all are looking forward to comparing against all of the great other swimmers that will be at those meets.
