EC just doesn’t have any talent right now. Combine that with low numbers and it will be a while before they emerge. Youth participation is a problem.
It is unfortunately hard to find games those weeks. All of the schools I listed (except Dayton Christian, forgot about the SWBL move) are MVC schools who have weeks 4-5 open and Manchester is independent. Hillsboro will 100% want to keep the game its a free win every year at this point. But if EC can find a new opponent for that week, they should consider it. But again as you said, a trip to Hillsboro is a fast and easy one so maybe that’s enough for EC to keep it. But EC did finally get away from playing CM/Wilmington and I’m glad, because I saw a lot of those games and they just were doing nobody involved any good, and the Hillsboro/Greenfield game is Starting to get that way for them too.For EC, scheduling for weeks 4/5 is difficult. Dayton Christian just joined the SWBL so they won't be an option. Not sure on the schedules of the teams you listed but there is a lot of travel involved there. Hillsboro will want to keep the game (it's a win for them), Greenfield will want to keep the game as well. I agree EC needs to schedule games you can win but you aren't going to win many when you lose to Huntington.
I would think that them having poor performance the last 10-15 years would drive down the interest of the youth program. I thought the move to the SBAAC national would put EC in a position to better compete and be at least middle of the pack in the division most years, but so far it’s only been a slight improvement over the SCOL.EC just doesn’t have any talent right now. Just a little history if anyone is interested... EC last won a league title in 2011, their last year in their previous stint in the SBAAC. They were quite successful back then, winning 5 titles, finishing 2nd five times and 3rd once, during their first 11 years in the league. Moving to the SCOL in 2012 to 2016 led to no finishes higher than 6th out of the 8 team league. A return to the SBAAC in 2017 has brought about four 4th place finishes, three 5th place finishes and one 6th place finish. It begs the question, where might they be today if they hadn't left for the SCOL in 2012 (where they did finish above Hillsboro two of those years).I would think that them having poor performance the last 10-15 years would drive down the interest of the youth program. I think they would be still winning the league some years, alternating between Williamsburg, BT and Blanchester! They would definitely be in a lot better spot. As said on this thread the move to the SCOL was more of a move because the community wanted it, but Maybe EC Athletics thought at the time in 2011 that they were able to compete in the SCOL?Just a little history if anyone is interested... If I remember right the AD and the varsity coaches of all sports were against the move, the community wanted the move and the board of education followed their move. We see how well that worked out. The community at the time thought EC was too good for the SBAAC..............now they finish in the bottom 2-3 in all male sports.I think they would be still winning the league some years, alternating between Williamsburg, BT and Blanchester! Also, I wonder if the SCOL schools who left to form the FAC invited EC to come with them as they really only wanted to get away from CM/Wilmington. Granted to say I’m glad that never happened, they would be in even worst of a position.

The AD at the time was Bill Bean. Marsh wouldn't be there for a few more years after that. I heard from one of the head coaches at EC at the time that every head coach in the district voted against going, with the exception of one, who was non-renewed within a year or two of them going. I think a lot of community members at that time saw most of the SCOL schools as traditional teams that EC had always played in the past and been competitive. The problem was those schools had grown up and EC's enrollment had not and actually had decreased. EC was D-IV for the 2012 season, the first in the league, but dropped to D-V the remaining years and eventually to D-VI. Plus, I think the travel in the SBAAC compared to the SCOL was a big selling point to many parents. Personally, I always thought that EC was, and is more similar to a lot of Scioto Valley Conference schools in enrollment and community make up than a lot of the SBAAC or former SCOL schools. The AD was Marsh at the time I believe, and he was a great AD who cared about the student-athletes and I think he was majorly against it. Unfortunately they should’ve never left, or if they did leave and wanted better competition they should’ve looked at the OHC or maybe even the SWBL small schools (but travel would be iffy for that).
Honestly, if the SHAC had football, I think EC would consider a move to that conference. They fit geographically and with their enrollment now In the low 300s they fit size wise too.
I think Bean and Hodge (football coach at the time) both left pretty close to each other. They let a group of parents make the decision based off of pee wee football success. They later pushed and got the pee wee coach hired and that didn't pan out too well. The AD at the time was Bill Bean. Marsh wouldn't be there for a few more years after that. Didn’t Matt Hodge coach at Hillsboro?I think Bean and Hodge (football coach at the time) both left pretty close to each other. They let a group of parents make the decision based off of pee wee football success. They later pushed and got the pee wee coach hired and that didn't pan out too well.
He left EC and went to Hillsboro for a couple of years.Didn’t Matt Hodge coach at Hillsboro?
I thought so. Knew that name was familiar. Started following football around 2014.He left EC and went to Hillsboro for a couple of years.
Agree with everything you said, I wonder at this point if anyone at EC has a plan to try and save sports or if they even care?Hodge was the last coach to win at EC. I think all of you hit the problem. When you let parents and community members run the show it is never good. I feel that there is value in their opinions and maybe a few should be included on a panel that makes decisions. This way both community members and coaches and ADs can hear each other. In ECs case, the coaches decided to vote against the SCOL but the community won. That was a set back. Community decided to push the peewee god as coach. Another set back. Youth levels and jr high levels have been decimated by the lack of support from the community. Another set back.
I got a feeling they really don’t care at this point, administration. They had that young coach for boy’s basketball (Phil I think?) and he had a great season with them, but he’s gone now too. But I think Coach Olds is doing the best with what talent he’s got. As I stated earlier, with how the district is declining in enrollment, I think it won’t be too long until they look at getting into the SHAC. Wonder if they are considering canning the football program? Would hate that, but interest and support just isn’t there.Agree with everything you said, I wonder at this point if anyone at EC has a plan to try and save sports or if they even care?
Why should their be interest from the students to play there? Their facilities are horrible. Lockerrooms havent been updated..ever. Weight room is laughable. It's like walking into the 1980's when you go to a game there on Friday nights. If you were a 14-18 yr old teen wanting to get hyped up to play a game, you definetly wont at EC. To create more excitement, maybe the community should pour some $$ into the Football program and watch what happens. Numbers will go up, excitement around the program will begin to grow and teens will want to be a part of it. Adapt or die. Raising money is by no means easy, but they need to find a way to make football exciting there again, and it starts with $. Olds does what he can with what he has. I agree those facilities could use an update but I don't think there is much money in that community any more. I hate it for those kids. Why should their be interest from the students to play there? There is. Someone has to be willing to go get it. CM is finding ways to come up with money. EC might not be able to do it as quickly as CM has, but over time there is no reason they cannot raise money to update facilities to create excitement around that program. Kids will rally.I agree those facilities could use an update but I don't think there is much money in that community any more. I hate it for those kids.
They should try to get local businesses and get sponsors. I think Wilmington did something like that to get their field at Alumni Field. Don’t quote me though. EC is getting a new gym. They desperately need the football facilities updated. There is. Someone has to be willing to go get it. CM is finding ways to come up with money. I think as of right now I’m taking Wilmington to beat Batavia. I think Wilmington will watch that Batavia/CM film. CM will take care of Roger Bacon by 3 TDs but Roger Bacon is actually a pretty good 16 seed. D4 Region 16 is solid. Burg and Maderia will be close and a great game.Wow, looks like Wilmington will be on their own version of a revenge tour. Especially after they handed away the last matchup between these two teams. Oh well, at least one sbaac team other than Massie will win a playoff game!!!!!
Madeira beat Finneytown by 2 and Deer Park by 6 the last 2 weeks. Unless they had injured players returning, this will not be close.I think as of right now I’m taking Wilmington to beat Batavia. Thanks for the insight. I know Maderia beat Batavia week 1 but after that I’m not sure what happened to them. So they are banged up? Williamsburg had a very close call to blanchester which in hindsight isn’t a great look. Also that loss to NR raises concerns for me.Madeira beat Finneytown by 2 and Deer Park by 6 the last 2 weeks. Madeira technically beat Batavia in wk #1, but only because Batavia gave away the game. I was there, and I know why they lost, but won't go into details. I repeat from an earlier post that the problem that existed in that game was quickly rectified going into week #2 and hasn't happened again since. The problem for Batavia right now is they are missing Max Mehlman due to injury for the rest of 2024. He was a major WR producer and doubled on defense as running down the offensive threats. Also, as was shown by C-M's powerful running game, their run defense while adequate against many, can be pounded. That said, however, I have a feeling that the coaching staff has well analyzed that game and has made changes to tighten that area up.Thanks for the insight. Batavia still does have Hughbanks. Wilmington held Batavia to limited rushing yards in their previous matchup, so I’m going to bet Batavia will be passing first this game. Wilmington played great defense against the bulldogs but just started to fall apart unfortunately. Wilmingtons QB has found his stride although, competition these last 3 weeks hasn’t been the highest. I think if Wilmington can limit the big plays and get the run game going, they should win. If Batavia can continue to exploit defenses for big gains, and if they can have even 100 yards of rushing, they will win. The Wilm/Bat re-match should be good. It was close all the way in their match-up with 21 pts scored by both offenses in the last minute of their initial match-up.
That’s Wilmingtons biggest issue, and they could be 8-2 or even 9-1 right now if they were more disciplined. TOs and stupid penalties cost them the CM game. Wilmington plays very physical, and if they can play physical against Batavia and not get 12 penalties they should win this game.I was at the CM/Batavia game. I knew CM would run the ball on them. What I thought the biggest key was that CM played very physical with the Batavia WRs. I know they were missing #5 but it wouldn’t have mattered with the way they were played. The WRs got jammed and could barely get into routes. Batavias run game is very weak.
Wilmington wins this one if they can play clean and eliminate TOs and penalties. That’s a big if though as they lack a tremendous amount of discipline.
