PAC 2022

Fairless showed a complete lack of discipline tonight. Inexplicable, unprompted unsportsmanlike penalties coming out of timeouts coming back off the sideline. Not once. Not twice, but like four different times.

They were lucky it was close. CVCA stopped playing on the blocked field goal and gifted Fairless a touchdown to breathe life into them. And Fairless still couldn’t get it done.

But Brody Pomneo. Wow. What a player.

A great win for the Royals, who nonetheless earned it. Ran out to a two score lead and held on. Running out the clock on an opponent at home for the second time in three games.

Were there punches thrown or something? Unsportsmanlike out of timeouts?

Don't you think that if CVCA was operated like typical private they would have dominated the PAC? I mean we literally have had 1 basketball player in the history of the program that is considered a "national recruit". In football maybe 4 kids have went on the play in division 1 programs (Pettigrew, Tucker, Junko and a lineman from the 90's. Even the wrestling program hasn't produced that many division 1 wrestlers. What's funny is when CVCA was terrible in football from 13-17 no one really had much to say. When we got competitive again since 2017 they must have started recruiting better 😂😂.
CVCA does what’s being discussed way less than the schools i mentioned. But you can’t say, competitive balance only applies to the privates that really take advantage of being private. You have to apply it to all privates.

I heard some stuff recently about things that happen at another private in the area for football and basketball players…holy smokes…kids rarely show up to class, grades get changed, diplomas given for early graduation when teachers haven’t seen the student in months….there’s more, but I’m not about to be the one that opens Pandora’s box on a public forum

Enough with the ridiculous drivel. If you know something about another private school, and what you allege is going on, then that is disgraceful. But please stop trying to frame CVCA in that type of activity by association.

I personally love the PAC and am sorry to see CVCA on the way out. My posts here try to be fair to every single team. These kids put their bodies on the line for what amounts to our entertainment.

I have one son who graduated from CVCA. Not once was a grade changed, was he allowed to skip class or did any of the hideous activities you allege occur. I personally had him sit out early in his time at CVCA when he wasn’t getting it done in the classroom. I have another son who also is an athlete. I speak from first hand experience.

CVCA and Fairless played one of the all time great games in recent PAC memory tonight, and all you can push is your agenda. Be better. Please.

Let’s talk about the game.

Gonna have to agree with 'Cuse on this one. We fill up our weeks with "i heard this" and "someone said that" comments. But the reason we're here is for the games and last night was the 2022 PAC season's GOTY.

The Public-Private discussion runs it's course on this site in the offseason. Every year.

Cuse and I both have sons who were recent all state football players at CVCA. Who also excelled in other sports at CVCA. I can promise you and everyone on the forum I paid every cent of the 10k tuition for him to attend and I coached in the program for over 10 years. If anyone was going to go tuition free or get crazy perks for attending it probably would have been him. Maybe I was a bad negotiator?

Also, lost is the shadow of CVCA-Fairless, congrats to Tuslaw for the OT win. Manchester has a beat up Triway coming to New Franklin next week. After that they'll need a "shock the world" kind of win to keep from going winless

I’m not sure where this came from Cuse - it was meant as a compliment to CVCA for actually caring about something other than sports as compared to some of its counterparts. It was no slight on CVCA at all. I even sort of eluded to that in my last post about all CVCA doesn’t go after athletes like the other privates but unfortunately you have to put all privates under the same rules.

Tbh tho - I was replying to someone else, you’ll see that in my post. So excuse me if I don’t really care that it hurts your feelings, I wasn’t even talking to you boss. I have zero “agenda” against CVCA - I think it’s personally dumb that they’re leaving the PAC - and have even advocated that they’re next stop should be the Metro league because I think itd be great for them. Stop being so sensitive. And oh btw - you’re the one who posted the original post about competitive balance…I didn’t even bring it up.

No box scores available anywhere yet from the game last night and this is the only article online. I know there were multiple sports writers at the game, anyone find anything?

^^ That is inexcusable. Not sure whose fault; the schools' or the paper's. But that is inexcusable.
This is the beacon journal one, first game for anyone in the league I haven't been able to find any info on afterwards

Since you guys asked for it ... here you go. It's a novel. (Sorry!)

CVCA - Fairless Recap: Royals 22 Falcons 20

The game was billed as the top two teams in the league meeting for a chance to remain undefeated in conference. And it lived up to its billing.

CVCA received the opening kick and committed to the ground game early. Kyle Snider broke off a 27-yard carry on the second play of the game, and the Royals drove to the Fairless 21-yard line, before a holding penalty derailed the drive. Facing 4th and 14 from the 35, CVCA went for it, and Fairless held.

Carson Colucci then took the field and Fairless entered CVCA territory, but Colluci was hurried on a throw and CVCA freshman Charley Levak outjumped the intended receiver, who I believe was Gavin Conley, and recorded his his second interception in as many weeks. The Royals responded and drove down the field, with a drive that again saw the ground game working, but was also helped along by a 27-yard pass from Ryan Wiehe to Ricky Levak. Inside the red zone, Joey Kopec ran the ball down to the four. Snider followed with a run to the one, and Wiehe scored on a sneak to put the Royals up 7-0 late in the first quarter.

On the ensuing drive, the Falcons drove to the CVCA 26-yard line and faced a third down. That's when Fairless head coach A.J. Sarbaugh dialed up some trickeration. For the second time this season, he went to the Pumneo to Luke Yoder option pass off the jet sweep. It worked, and the Facons knotted the score. But unlike week 4, when a similar play set up the game winner against Northwest, it was interesting to see the Falcons resort to a trick play so early.

CVCA was determined to match the intensity of Fairless this year, after many of the same players were manhandled in Navarre a year ago. And the Falcons second quarter began to unravel on the very next play. People will remember the Kyle Snider 43-yard carry to the one. (Replay shows he actually stayed inbounds and scored.) But the unraveling started on the ensuring kickoff. The Facons kicked short, and Dreylin Price set out on a return, which ended as he was shoved out of bounds on the Falcons 44. What happened next may have been missed by many, but he was hit late, in the blue part of the turf on the Royals sideline. No call on the late hit, but it was the last time the Falcons got a break from the refs.

Snider's scamper down to the one was followed by Ryan Wiehe's second touchdown sneak. It was 14-7 Royals.

The next Fairless drive saw the Falcons again march into CVCA territory, where they called timeout on fourth and 4. Inexplicably, as the teams returned to the field, with the Falcons seemingly having momentum on their side, something was said by one of the Falcons players as he cruised past the referee. To the shock of every person in the stadium, a dead ball unsportsmanlike conduct penalty derailed another promising drive. The Falcons punted on fourth and 19.

CVCA went six plays for 27 yards, but the drive stalled, and Fairless had another chance before halftime. This time Colucci would be victimized by the stingy CVCA defense again. Colluci rolled right on a third down play, and launched a pass. But Joey Kopec skied and snatched the ball out of the air, before it could reach its intended target. He returned the pick to the 28 yard line, where he was shoved out of bounds as he tiptoed down the sideline. But the shove wasn't enough. The Falcons defender gave Kopec an extra shove. He fell and landed near the edge of the CVCA track. Late hit out of bounds. Half the distance to the goal. The Royals set up shop on the Falcons 14 yard line. Three plays later, Snider dove in from the one with less than a minute to go. The snap was muffed on the PAT, but Levak found freshman Dirk Geiger crossing in the end zone. The all-important 2-point conversion made it 22-7 at the break.

In all, the Falcons were flagged for three personal fouls and a sideline warning in the second quarter alone.

The third quarter began with Fairless moving the opening kickoff downfield on a 12-play drive, which took time off the clock. But it only covered 31 yards. Throughout the second half - and the game for that matter - whenever Fairless needed a big conversion, Colucci looked for his main threat, Brody Pomneo, who finished the game with 11 catches for 94 yards and a touchdown. But the Falcons could not get any big offensive plays all night. The initial 31-yard drive ended on downs when CVCA two-way lineman and two-sport athlete, Tony Collins, latched on to Colucci and used every bit of his heavyweight wrestling skills to bring the QB to the turf for a drive-ending sack.

The Royals appeared in command of the game at that point. Up two scores, CVCA drove into the red zone again, and set up a field goal try by Calvin Warren. It was the turning point of the second half. Warren's kick was low, and into the back of his line. It bounced into the left flat area, where Luke Yoder scooped it up. Most of the Royals thought the play was dead and stopped playing. Only holder Ricky Levak and kicker Warren gave chase. Yoder juked Levak at the 10-yard line and was of to the races with a convoy of Falcons. 94 yards and a PAT later, it was suddenly a 22-14 game heading into the fourth quarter.

The Royals next drive would start in good field position again, at the Falcons 45-yard line after Logan Scranton returned another short kick to near midfield. Most in the stands figured CVCA would benefit from another undisciplined Fairless personal foul penalty, as Scranton took a forearm to the helmet after the play was over. But this time, officials declared offsetting penalties, and Fairless was spared further damage from the laundry the littered the field all night. CVCA used up more clock over seven plays, getting down to the Falcons 20. The drive was extended by another unsportsmanlike call that negated a CVCA hold, as well as two encroachment calls, one that gave the Royals a first down. But by this time, Fairless was selling out to stop the run. It worked. CVCA eventually turned it over on downs. But it took up precious time.

The final Falcons drive of the evening - Fairless only possessed the ball twice in the second half - saw Colucci mostly keep to the air. It was the only thing working. Peter Killy was held in check all night (6 rushes for 20 yards). Pomneo and Gavin Conley carried a combined five times for 20 more yards on jet sweeps. And Colucci was the Falcons leading rusher (11 carriers for 36). But when the Falcons needed him most, Colucci delivered a pair of third and more than 10 conversions. The drive reached the Royals 10-yard line with just under four minutes left, where it was third and 4. Sarbaugh called time out. Both teams returned to the field. The Falcons must not have liked the play call. They called a second time out, leaving them just one remaining. Colucci hit Pomneo as he darted left for the Falcons first conventional touchdown of the night. That set up the game-deciding two-point play. Colucci rolled to his right. Pumneo was covered. So, he put is head down. The resulting collision with Logan Scranton at the one-yard line knocked the Falcons QB out of bounds and separated him from the ball.

CVCA recovered the onside kick. After Fairless used its final time out following the first play of the drive, the CVCA run game (50 carries for 259 yards; Snider 24 for 181) finished off the Falcons. Snider's final carry set up three straight kneel downs for Wiehe after the 2:00 minute mark. And all that remained was the handshake line.

Colucci finished 19 of 33 for 170 yards and a touchdown. But the two first half interceptions and the 13 penalties (most of their own doing) for 112 yards doomed any chances the Falcons had at a win on Friday night.

The victory sets up another big game next Friday night, as CVCA will travel to Northwest. After three straight weeks defending the most prolific passing attacks in the conference (Snyder from Canton South, Miller at Triway and Colucci), the Royals can expect a heavy dose of the run game backed by the Indians Kyler Miraglia. Fairless will look to rebound but has a tough test with a home date against Poochie Snyder and Canton South.

Thirteen penalities in a game of that magnitude is pretty crazy, watching the stream from last night it appears even the Fairless kicker was called for a personal foul after a kickoff. It's a shame what should have been a great game was derailed as often as that one was.

Switching to another PAC team, I think Orrville is the best bad team I've ever seen play. I know their results have not been good and final scores haven't exactly been close but they play really physical and have a great offensive scheme that just seems to be snakebitten. I could see them getting it turned around sooner rather than later

South came out with the win 56-36 vs Triway. Game looked over at half 42-8, but the Titans came out of the second half with zero quit in them. Played tough in the second. Poochie Snyder was just too much. 4 Tds through the air and 3 on the ground.

They didn't go for 2? I assumed they would. At 0-5, they had nothing to lose.
heard manchester crying because they got screwed by the officials again. bad spots but they fail to mention the inadvertant whistle that brought back a td by tuslaw early in the game. exactly how was the officiating if you were there. was it so one sided

Maybe he scored because the whistle blew and everyone stopped. Yes, it was terrible. 1st game I've seen this year and nothing has changed in the PAC when it comes to officiating.

The Weekly Power Rankings are ready. As the calendar moves toward October, change is in the air. You can feel it. Five weeks of warm weather game way to sweatshirts and jackets on Friday night. Autumn has arrived, and there's change at the top of the Power Rankings as well. Without further ado ...

As you could have easily surmised, these two teams remain atop the Power Rankings heading into Week 6

1. CVCA (5-1, 3-0) (+1) - What a four-week run for the Royals. Woodridge, Canton South, Triway and Fairless. A combined 16-4 in games against teams other than CVCA. 0-4 against the Royals. CVCA has run - literally - to the top of the Power Rankings and the top of the PAC standings. The rushing attack continues to rack up more than 300 yards a game. But perhaps lost in the five-game winning streak is the performance of the run defense. The 2007 Royals set the school record when the limited opponents to 112 yards a game. Through six weeks, this addition of the Royals is yielding 67 a contest. Having just defeated arguably the three best passing offenses in the conference, it will be a tall task for the remaining opponents of the Royals schedule. The immediate challenge for the CVCA coaching staff: ensuring the Royals maintain the focus and avoid a letdown against a very good Northwest team - one that will challenge the Royals run defense with the best run game they might see all season.

2. Fairless (5-1, 2-1) (-1) - The Falcons could be 6-0. But they came to CVCA and lost their minds. Unsportsmanlike conducts off dead ball time outs. Unsportsmanlike conducts on the coaching staff. Late hit penalties. Numerous pre-snap offsides penalties on defense, one which kept a CVCA drive alive on a fourth down. The Falcons are a very good football team - when they play football. The Falcons need to be a smarter football team - top to bottom - to reverse the disturbing trend of losing big games. Now 0-5 since Week 5 of 2020 in games with first place in the PAC on the line or in the playoffs. The reset needs to happen fast. Canton South visits Fairless on Friday night.

3. Canton South (4-2, 2-1) (unchanged) - Poochie Snyder continues to be electric. Four more touchdowns through the air on Friday night a. Three more on the ground. Snyder and Xavier WIlliams are easily the most dangerous QB-WR combo in the conference. The Wildcats are worth the price of admission. The PAC has had some dynamic players over the years. Make sure you make plans to see these guys in action. Your next chance? Friday night at Fairless.

4. Northwest (4-2, 2-1) (unchanged) - Don't look now, but the Indians are only a game out of first place in the conference, and they've got the league leaders coming to their house on Friday night in a game that will put strength against strength. Indians head coach John Demarco went 65-28 at Louisville with three playoff appearances in nine seasons. He had the undefeated regular season in 2020 at Northwest. But an argument could be made that he's in the midst of the best coaching job of his career. Kyler Miraglia has emerged as a real weapon in the run game. He ran for 254 on Friday against Orrville and tallied three touchdowns as Northwest ran for 332 as a team. If you like old school football, Canal Fulton is the place to be this week.

5. Triway (3-3, 2-1) (unchanged) - You want to talk about good coaching? Down 42-8 at the half with backup quarterback Cale Drown subbing for injured starter Zack Miller at quarterback, Titans coach Eric Brenner told the Canton Repository, "We challenged the boys at halftime to respond and after the game, we told them to make sure that their effort in the second half counts for something by keeping it going. If they do that, we will be back to our winning ways." And respond they did. Triway outscored South 28-14 in the second half, forcing South to keep the starters in. A trip to winless Manchester is up next before the Titans have Northwest at home, Fairless on the road and a home date with Orrville to close out the season.

6. Orrville (2-4, 1-2) (unchanged) - The young Red Riders might not have the results to show for it, but the growth continues. Orrville amassed 173 yards on the ground and quarterback Sawyer Hamsher passed for 185 yards against Northwest on Friday night, in a 27-7 loss. Mason Woodruff caught a 36-yard touchdown pass and led the team-with three catches for 87 yards, and Asiah Smith added 85 yards on 10 carries. The Riders get a chance to even their conference record on Friday when they host Tuslaw.

7. Tuslaw (3-3, 1-2) (unchanged) - If you did in fact bet the house last week, based on the unsolicited advice here, don't ever do that again! But yes, indeed. The streak is over. The Mustangs won their first PAC game in 18 tries dating back to 2019, a thrilling 27-26 OT victory against Manchester. But they needed a clutch fourth down 25-yard touchdown pass late in the fourth quarter from Troy Harbeitner to Tommy Snyder to tie the game. Overtime was required when the PAT failed. After Harbeitner and Snyder connected again from 30 yards in OT, the game was decided when Manchester had their own PAT troubles, failing to convert the tying kick after scoring their own OT touchdown. With a final three weeks that includes CVCA, Canton South and the Blue Cup game with Fairless, the best chance at getting a second PAC victory will come this week at Orrville.

8. Manchester (0-6, 0-3) (unchanged) - If the Panthers get the Week 6 first half Triway Titans this week, they might have a chance. Maybe. If they get the second half Week 6 Titans, it's going to be another long night in a long season.

Are we having fun yet?

Last point - putting it to bed.

When I said "CVCA does what’s being discussed way less than the schools i mentioned" I was referring to the previously mentioned recruiting or invitation of athletes strictly for athletic purposes. My very next sentence I even make a comment how unfortunately for CVCA we can't have some rules for privates who do it right, and some for the others, they all have to play under the same rules. Meaning, they get lumped in with the privates who are abusing the system for athletics.....but there's nothing we can do about it.

I have tons of respect for CVCA - it is IMO the classiest private in the area. Truly care about the students, do things the right way, care about the opponents, not willing to sell their souls for athletes.....it's the epitome of how a private school should be run.

My points about grade changing and shady happenings - well screw it, we'll call a spade a spade right?! I'm referencing Hoban and their football and basketball programs....The things I've heard about what goes on there are truly disgraceful.

Same. A few years ago our family was going to move if our district didn't pass the new school ballot item. The 2 school "districts" we were considering were (1) Wadsworth and (2) CVCA.

I'll get called a homer, but I think NW has a punchers chance against CVCA this week. These two always seem to play close games - I think both teams sell out to stop the run, it'll come down to who can find the big play here and there!

In the "it's Monday, so why not" category - Fairless loss had me thinking that means they'll probably be good & focused for Canton South this week. After that it's Manchester, Triway, Blue Cup to 9-1.

9-1 & possible 2nd place in PAC should set them up well, right? Especially since they dropped from D4 to D5 this year, right? Quick answer - nope. Fantastic50 shows them as 8 seed at 8-2. If they hit 9 wins then they jump all the way up to . . . #7.

That gives them a week 12 trip to South Range or Garaway. Ouch.

Don't want to pick the scab on this topic, but we all saw how they reacted against the best team they'll play in the regular season. Makes me wonder even more if the Falcons might have benefited from at least 1 "challenging" game in their first 3. I know it's a po-tay-toe, poh-tah-toe topic at this point, but not a great look for the league when one of the "best" teams in the league would have barely qualified for the D5 playoffs without expansion.

How is a team going 5-1 in conference and barely being an 8 seed a condemnation of that team and not the conference as a whole? Also, I personally think they'll end up 4-2 with losses to Canton South and CVCA who are both high quality teams
