Ohio State Football 2024

I grew up at a time when we didn't play Ohio teams. Lots of games against the Pac 8/10, Southwest Conference with a smattering of Big 8, ACC, SEC and Independents. Never played MAC or MAC level opposition.
Back in the day they only played 10 or 11 regular season games … now they play 12 … and I also remember in the 1990’s the state senate members making a stink about OSU not playing any Ohio schools … and ever since then they have played at least one in state school … but I also remember going to an OSU vs Rice game and OSU vs Wyoming game when I was young.

I disagree. You play an opponent, you have real game film to analyze, see what isn't ideal and where there is work to be done. You may see a position or two where your starter isn't performing as well as the guy behind him. All kinds of good info.

Some day what or whoever controls CFB will allow spring and/or fall scrimmages and practicing together among teams. CFB is looking more and more like the NFL (for better and worse) and if that is the reality, they will move toward an off and pre-season that helps get teams ready to play at a higher level. As it is, Akron, W Mich, and the Thundering Turds are the de facto pre-season schedule for 2024 OSU.
I like seeing the backups getting playing time. Keep them engaged and seeing what the future may look like.

I'm so old, I remember when the reg season was 10 games. Started in mid-Sep and was done the week before Tgiving. Then they added one game to make it an 11 game regular season and now it's 12 - and the season runs from late Aug to Tgiving weekend. With a conference championship game and now potentially 3-4 playoff games for the best programs.

The Times, they are a changing. But you get these MAC and other non-Power 4 games because the season has been greatly extended. A potential playoff team can't wear itself out and take a couple of losses early in the season. FWIW

I can agree with that
I wish you and everyone who thinks like you would give teams time to work their kinks out and grow.

There are some knowns with Oregon. Their QB will probably end up being the all time passing yards leader in CFB history. He didnt/couldnt stretch the field like we expected in game 1. Their overall roster is top 5 in the nation on paper. Their skill players are exceptional. They are supposed to be 10-12 deep on the DL. Their OL didn't do very well against Idaho in pass pro or run blocking. The back 7 of their defense got exposed at times.

But if they get better OL play (sounds like Ohio St) and fix the back 7 issues of their defense, they will be what they were expected to be. They better be better this week because the Smurfs are no joke.

The point is that drawing firm conclusions about what teams are this early in the year almost always ends up in gross miscalculation.

I remember Rice in 1993 and 1996? Wyoming in 97? I remember the state senate thing too. I think it was wrong. Things change, not always for the best.

I guess I never should have realized that Oregon is the standard in college football? What have they accomplished in the last few seasons outside of beating a Ryan Day led Ohio State team?

OSU isn't going to get the benefit of the doubt as long as Ryan Day is the coach, that man is lucky he's still employed by Ohio State.

Yep, Ohio State should only play Georgia, or Alabama every game. Nothing else really matters.

No one said they were "the standard of college football". That kind of dishonest rhetoric is one reason why people have a problem with you.

Oregon had expectations coming into this year based on the roster they had and the QB they brought in. They did not meet those expectations in their first game. What does that mean? Well, there are multiple reasonable explanations. For some reason, you are inclined to go to the most extreme negative option. Why is that? Is it a "hot take" itch you have to scratch or perhaps it's a lens you generally look at the world through? IDK, but it's irritating and you would do yourself and us a favor if you could mitigate that habit.

Let me ask you this - is the past, recent or far, determinant of the future of a football team? If it is determinant, to what degree? Do you recognize that x team can look bad and lose by 2 scores to a decent team in their 2nd game of the season, but go on and win the national championship? Is that possible? If so, shouldn't that make you cautious about making firm proclamations about teams before week 2 is played?

I have many more questions I could ask, but I will stop there.

Depends on the program we are talking about.

They are ranked 7th. Somebody thinks they are a worthy opponent.

Only UGa and Alabama are worthy, apparently. And you have to beat them every time. Basically Ohio State can never lose a game for ole Sparty to be satisfied. I hope he holds himself to the same high standard.
I work in sales, either I perform well or I get fired. So yes I do hold myself to high standard

Well, when we are talking about a program that is considered to have the talent and basic elements to be a playoff contender, I would posit that all they need to do is get in - and then they have an opportunity to come together and play their best ball in their last 4 or 5 games (possible conference championship and 3 or 4 playoff matchups) and be national champions.

Oregon is definitely one of those teams. A 10 point win in game 1 certainly does not ruin their chances to achieve the big prize. It just means they have some things to work on and improve. Implying it means anything other than that is just silly.
