Ironton Vs. Marion Local In Week 1...Not So Fast

Talking big school's vs small schools, this might come as a surprise to some yappi posters but football is not the end all at small schools like Marion Local (MAC schools). Economics do matter (diesel fuel plus other economic considerations). AD's are going to do what is best for their school not what some yappi posters want. Hoban, St. Eds do not have 8 game league schedules either. Marion Local will try to fill the fill the non league schedule with closest available than go from there and as a taxpayer that is what schools should do. St. EDs, Hoban. Glenville are all private schools.
Great points but Glenville is a public school.

ML sure is dominant for a school that doesn't place much importance on it, lol. Sorry I have to call BS here. I mentioned several publics including small school Dalton - they were not afraid of being too rusty for Kirtland. I am sure there are plenty other examples. Would be nice to get Wapakoneta back, but there are others.

You mean you don't like the grain elevator backdrop lol
I can appreciate it, for sure. I get a kick out of some of the rural areas. For example, I can remember watching a Marion Elgin playoff game in the late 90s. There was a field (or maybe a treeline) at one of the endzones and a local had started a campfire to sit by and watch the game.

I've gone to a few games at Pemberville Eastwood and just outside of the stadium at one of the endzones is a large tree line with a field behind it. Someone built a pretty large deerstand like structure up in the trees to watch the games from.

I spent a good bit of my career out west and found myself in Nucla, Colorado for a game. Each team had like 20 kids and most of the fans just sat on the side of the hill. In the background were the San Juan Mountains. Such a beautiful spot.

Another one from out west that sticks out is Deadwood, SD. The field was at a rodeo ground and historic mining museum in the mountains.

Grain elevators are pretty cool too lol.

I think the point wasn't that it isn't very important but the schools do have a fiduciary duty to the taxpayers of the district. We just gifted the school a bond levy that instituted an income tax for the first time and hiked our property taxes. The boosters help but often they have to solicit local businesses to make these longer trips happen. I think that's the missing thing when all these "fans" say go play Kirtland, Ironton, etc. Taking 4 hr trips every year might start to wane support for the local businesses. Yeah it would be nice to get Wapak back but that ship has sailed unfortunately. I want to reach out to a Piqua, Troy, Tipp, etc that are closer and are bigger schools. I think those would be good matchups.

Fair enough. I just don't see the significant fiduciary constraint of what we are talking about. You traveled 4 hrs to Indiana didn't you? I actually think it would potentially more lucrative than costly (or wash at worst) with the additional gate. And like I said I would definitely try to add pay per view.

Did not say that but the AD has to do what is in the best interest of the school district not just what is in the best interest for the football team. Having a 3 hr. -4hr. road trip for a football game is down the list. And ML dominance has to do with Tim Goodwin not how much importance the Flyers put on football, it is important but not the end all yappi posters believe it is.

Correct, we did. The last time we did a trip of that nature during the regular season was 2014. The long trips are often funded by local businesses so you don't want to overstep your boundaries. I'm not sure what Indiana does with the gate and if ML received any of that money. I'm sure they did but even with a game like Ironton, the crowd is definitely still going to be a lot smaller for the ML side compared to if the game was more local. So the gate may help to a degree with travel and pay per view may help a little but the deficit will have to be made up somewhere. Like someone else mentioned, contrary to popular belief, ML is not a rich district and we don't really have Uber wealthy alumni.

Had no choice but keep trolling, ML will do what is in the best interest of ML school district not what yappi posters want. Again the AD will try and fill the non league schedule with the closest teams just as he does with bball and that is what he should do. No matter what you think.

I don't think it happens; the X account that tweeted that it isn't affiliated with ML

This would be a Godzilla vs. King Kong match-up!

Marion Local last year had 6 road games and in the 2 non-league games ML probably traveled a farther distance than the bball team traveled in 11 road games. The AD does have to stay within budget. In 19 ML traveled to Watterson but Watty did not make the return trip it was a one-year deal only, Wapak did not make a return trip in 24 and the Flyers obviously could not find anyone to come to Marion Local thus 6 road games. Any deal that ML makes has to be a 2-year deal no more 4 game home schedules.

Trolling? Ok I'll bow out snowflake. By all means do what's in your best interests. (I'll have to remember that one). Not like they are the only school in Ohio whose schedules and potential matchups are discussed, did not mean to offend.

I would think the large gate that ML brings would be attractive for Sidney, Piqua, Troy, etc.

Money talks.
Overall this would be unlikely but here's my quick speculation on the northern MVL teams. (Geographic location, not how the league is actually split.)

They only have week 1 available for non-conference. Sidney likely wouldn't ever give up their Bellefontaine game that's been played for well over 100 years now. Piqua and Troy could be more likely, but they usually schedule Dayton City League type teams for their games. Butler I think is playing Northmont consistently again which is a rivalry game for them. Tipp seems to play average to above average same size schools that probably bring decent gates. Greenville would get murdered worse than Hillsdale did so they're out.

So overall Piqua and Troy might be the only ones swayed if they were seeking better gates.

Are you insinuating Dayton Public would be a better gate than Marion Local?

Its hard to say they're a true public when talking football. GHS only had 11 boys graduate from the class of 2024. All of their football players go straight to GA.
Marion, alot like us, will play whomever will sign the contract. No reason a home and home can't be figured out. Hell the Flyers went 4.5 hours to Linton last year. Travel is not an issue.
In the last 10 years, ML has gone 17-1 against non-conference opponents (all weeks 1 and 2).

0-1 vs. D3 Watterson, 100 miles

4-0 vs. D7 McComb, 75 miles 2x

3-0 vs. D3 Wapakoneta, 25 miles 2x

*2-0 vs. D6 Patrick Henry, 80 miles 1x

2-0 vs. D4 Woodlan (IN), 65 miles 1x

2-0 vs. D3 Franklin, 77 miles 1x

2-0 vs. D3/D4 Chaminade Julienne, 60 miles 1x

1-0 vs. D6 Linton-Stockton (IN), 215 miles 1x

1-0 vs. D7 Beallsville

7 out of ML's 8 conference games are all under 18-mile one-way trips.
Where do you find 2025 Ohio HS schedules?

I would like to see a Tipp City game. Would not have been close this year, but many years it would be a fairly competitive one, with cultures that are not too dissimilar. One thing for sure, you can not take this year and apply that level going forward. This was a special team and it will likely be awhile before that repeats.

I think you're missing Patrick Henry in there somewhere

Front stretch at Eldora. Plenty of seating and a nice video board

Do you think ML will put that win streak on the line in week 1 against a even opponent. Let's see if they back up their tough talk or will they avoid a schedule a cupcake.
