December 7th, 1941: The Japaneese (or was it the Germans...IYKYK) attacked Pearl Harbor.

For over 80 years the day was defined by that one singular moment.

Until 2024.

The OSU/Michigan game Was simply the under card to kick off the week and we are mere days away from the matchup of the century.

When we look back on a season there are definIng moments that foreshadow what we were about to see.

Kirtland, the defending DVI champs vs Perry, the DefeNding D5 Champs (who this year moved up to D4 and narrowly lost to Ted Ginn football factory).
The Hornets outlasted Perry in 3OT.

CW vs a D7 Marion Local: A 35-0 loss but hey the fiddy-fiddy was over 24K.....

Kirtland does what they do. Hornet Fans are saying this is their best OL ever, and that says a lot.

Coldwater threw a wrinkle out in week 1 by taking some snaps under center, and anOther wrinkle in week 11 with the wildcat.

It is no secRet, but CW has had issues with power running attacks and Kirtland is the definition of said attack. The Cavs have seen some success running the ball against most teams not named Marion Local.

HAs CW improved 35 points since week 10 because that is what we will see Saturday morning during our travel baseball pool play start time.

The key is first down. If the Hornets routinely have 2nd and 6 or less then they hoist the gold, and CW knows that so i expect Kirtland to use a little play action that could result in game clinching long pass plays. CW must find a way to keep them at 2nd and 7+ but not sell out to stop the run that they pop some big pass plays. A previous Kirtland/MSML game showed the type of kahunas that Tiger has by being aggressive when most coaches become passive.

In the past when Coldwate gives up long TD drives they seemed to think they needed to get it all back immediately and seemed to panic and rush the offense. Will CW's newfound run game be able to methodically matriculate the ball down the field which in turn gives the defense a rest?

All signs, to include the yappi-shere poll of 65%, point to Kirtland.

Team A's bread and butter is Team B's weakness.
Team B's strength has evolved to improve their weakness but it is a work in progress.

But the game is not always what it seems.

Luck is the residue to design and we may need a miracle to pull this one off. Miracles happen every day, but don't expect a miracle unless you help make it be. CW will need those bounces, tipped balls, to go their way but that cannot happen unless the players fly to the ball and are in the right place yet still keep track of their assignments because of Kirtland's ability to throw when need be.

Coach REed (God Bless His Soul),is the Father of Modern Day Coldwater football and his words still resonate throughout the community.

'Never forget, Never give in'
'Respect all, fearn none'
''f you do not believe in yourself then no one will'

For those of you who have a title (or 2 cough cough), you win it for your teammates you have been friends with your whole life, your school, your town, your community, your coaches, the past and future of the program.and of course.......yourself.

This one is different. Let's win this one for big #70. Just days prior to game 1 the program suffered a loss that no mother, father, brother, sister, friend, teammate, coach should ever have to experience. I did not know this young man, but the sight of the 70 flag slowly passing by each week in pregame brings a chill to even the most callous soul. The game will be the game, and slowly drift away in memories, but what those young men had to deal with this season will last them a lifetime.

May God Bless the USA.
May God Bless MAC
May God Bless #70
...and May God Bless The Coldwater Cavaliers.

The Hornets are being forced to relocate their practices this week to a different school due to the significant amount of snow in Northeast Ohio. Second year in a row that’s happened…

It may have happened a few other times but off the top of my head 1999 Girard comes to mind. The Indians finished 10-2. They lost to Poland in the regular season and Sandusky Perkins in the playoffs. Poland and Perkins both finished 15-0 and won the D3 and D4 state championships respectively. Poland was the 1st team in Ohio football history to finish 15-0.
Thanks for the reply. How about losing in the state championship game as their other loss?

Coldwater has a good passing attack maybe the best of any team outside Moeller at state this weekend. But the weather and Kirtland's defense will make throwing the football difficult.
Avon has a very dynamic passing attack with Good as the posing man. Cinci Anderson runs a 5 wide Kenton/Medina system and has the best passing attack at state…. Moeller can do whatever they want…. Loaded with talent everywhere

The same happened to Perry a year ago as well if I remember correctly.

A part of me misses the snow out that way. If my wife wasn’t from the west side I’d still live in Lake County 😂

2 thoughts:
1. Fantastic story. MAC even does journalism better.
2. Can someone shoot this to that random jabroni from Northmor who thinks all of Kirtland success is due to officials not calling them for holding? 🤣

Not to my knowledge as the 99 Girard team I mentioned is the only one I can think of that had only two losses and both came to undefeated state champions. I can think of a few other teams that lost to two undefeated state champions in the same season but those teams all had at least 3 losses. Coldwater almost lost to 3 undefeated state champions in 1995 but Lisbon had other ideas and beat Cincinnati Mariemont in 2OT in the D5 championship game. The Cavaliers had two losses in the regular season, to Versailles and St. Henry. Those two were undefeated state champs in D4 and D6 respectively. However, Coldwater then lost to undefeated Mariemont in the D5 semifinals to finish 10-3 but Lisbon beat Mariemont in the title game.

Of course neither has happened this year yet. MSML has to win and Coldwater has to lose. We shall soon see.

As Thavoice said above, if the Hornets routinely have 2nd and 6 or less, they hoist the gold. As I've stated in other threads, Marion Local has never trailed Kirtland by double digits in any of their meetings. It's very difficult to sustain a long drive and score on Marion Local defenses simply by running. At some point in the drive, they find a way to put you in a must pass situation. Coldwater needs to get them in 3rd and long just enough times to make this a contest in the 4th quarter. My heart says they will do it. My head says Kirtland grinds them down and wins by three scores.
Also, hearkening back to that 2012 game which the Cavs won 10-9, I remember LaVerde in the press conference talking about that touchdown where they lined up to go for two and lined up in the wrong formation. In a razor thin game, those seemingly minor things can cost you. Hoping for a great game. No surprises when you play Kirtland. You got to be able to take a beating for 4 quarters and keep dishing it back to them.

That 1995 CW Mariemont game was a cold one. CWs QB was a do it all type of player and top defender as well. Suffered an injury in the first half, shoulder/collarbone if I recall, and missed the rest of the game and that was all.she wrote as we had no experience after that. Coach Reed vowed to never again have no backup plan at QB.

Well degenerates, the appetizer starts tonite!

Last comments/thoughts/conerns/predictions/bags of sand to stack?

My final thoughts:
Week 2 Coldwater picked up Clinton Massie when Bellefountaine decided they did not want to renew and in all honesty that was a better test for Coldwater to face a style they have the most issues with.

Week 2: The Buzzard's passed the pretest.
Week 10: Buzzard's bombed the midterm.
Week 16: Final Exam vs Kirtland.

Usually by now i have some sort of feeling either way. I think the talk that Kirtland's OL is the best they ever had has really tempered the excitement and I fear we see a repeat of the Carey/tUYU/LC/MSML games.......

Goodluck Cavs and as i sign out for the last time prior to post game analysis....

May God Bless the USA.

Question - how many of the Coldwater specialists play defense? Thinking back to the year they played Carey remember the QB & a WR (i think) playing in the secondary making tackle after tackle and you could see it wear on them.

Will be interested to see what CW does to get a quick score/steal a possession to make Kirtland play left handed. Not to insult anyone else on their schedule, but Kirtland hasn't played a this well coached of a team since week 3 at Perry.
Cavaliers have just 5 two-way players. Far fewer than recent years.
#78 OT / DE
#24 & 25 RB/LB
#14 & 7 WR/DB
Each of these has a backup that can sub-in at-will unless Coach says no.

I think the Hornets will have about the same # of two-way starters. Though anything can happen in a state title lineup/matchup-wise.

In 21, Kirtland had to get out of their game plan...they lost.
In 22, Kirtland stayed in their game plan but lost to ML.
In 23, Versailles was forced to get out their game plan and Kirtland won.
In 24 I see Kirtland staying in their run 1st offensive plan and Coldwater staying in a balanced offensive plan. This could create a great game. Both Qb's are special players.
What does the football God want?
Does the muffled punt bounce back to you or away from you?
Does the fumbled ball bounce out of bounds in the endzone or get recovered by offensive team? And then there are special teams!
Good Luck
Cavs

I doubt if CW can score more than 17pts. on Kirtland they (K) play really good defense. Cavs have to stop the run to be able to win but even than it will still be close. ML shut Kirtland's running game down in 22 and still only won 14 - 6. This assuming Kirtland's defense is similar to 22, you know what happens when you assume.
