2025 Cincinnati Reds Thread

Sampling of free agent pitcher deals:

Luis Severino, A’s: 3 yrs, $67M (A’s largest contract ever)
Yusei Kikuchi, Angels: 3 yrs, $63M
Frankie Montas, Mets: 2 yrs, $34M
Matthew Boyd, Cubs: 2 yrs, $29M

Maybe the one-year, $21M deal for Nick Martinez wasn’t so bad. It looks in line with — or better than, given the lack of risk — what the market is bearing.
Wow. None of these guys are great, that's for sure. Kikuchi is the one guy on there who may be worth the price paid.

That is a weird way for the A's to finally spend. They have let so many decent young guys go rather than pay them, and now they overpay a middling pitcher who is almost always hurt. He was really good in 2017 and 18. hurt every year until 2024. A's must have been drunk to sign Severino to this deal.

So now that the baseball season is officially over, the Reds can now begin to hone in on roster construction for 2025. A big time name that's out there that would be right down the teams need list is Juan Soto.
The Good, a guy like Soto with solidify the lineup in the #3, #4 hole as that outfield power bat. He's durable, doesn't miss games, hits for average, power and has an on base percentage like Votto.
The Bad, not a great outfielder. He's going to be uber expensive and there will be alot of bidders for him.

Could the Reds make a serious push for him? This is his first run and free agency, he's going to command as big of contract as there may be in baseball, why would the Reds be of any interest to him?
I heard the Reds were a few bags of broccoli short from winning the bidding war.

Juan Soto (Mets), Michael Conforto (Dodgers) and Tyler O’Neill (Orioles) are off the table.

The Reds better get down to business signing or trading for an outfielder before the shelf empties.

Being reported that the Reds are kicking the tires on Guardian first baseman Josh Naylor and outfielder Lane Thomas.

Reds again sitting around with their thumbs up their a**, doing nothing while the Cubs get Kyle Tucker. Useless regarded front office.

Not aggressively going after a title during the 2025 to 2027 window while this team is relatively cheap and capable of winning would be the final nail in the coffin for this ownership group and their puppet, Nick Krall.

F’n limp losers. Jesus Christ, they’re pathetic. F**k Reece Hinds, he can’t hit a breaking ball. Get a real OF bat. Tito should resign if they do nothing. No Reds fan was expecting to be a player for Soto but to do nothing? That’s f’n terrible and shameful.

This is why I was shocked Francona took the job to begin with. Why come out of retirement to manage a franchise that is never going to seriously try to win a title?

And these p**sy media members talking about Reece Hinds, f**k you and f**k Reece Hinds.

Given the Soto and Ohtani contracts raised the bar for FA dollars, the Reds reported $20 million to spend won't go far. Maybe Winker. Else they looking at trades.

Looking around the division, the Brewers have lost Adamas and closer Devin Williams, the Cubs picked up Kyle Tucker from the Astros.

Apparently Jameir Candelario hurt himself in a Dominican league game recently. Do the major league teams have any control over these guys during the off season? I mean the Reds are going to pay him alot of money the next season or two, wouldn't it had made sense that he NOT play baseball this winter? He's not 21 years old.

Hard for us to know what is in that contract, but I have heard of contracts that restrict behavior, like "no pickup basketball games" for NFL guys, and such.

Honestly, the Reds may have asked him to play winter ball to try to find his batting stroke again.

This trade is interesting mainly because the Reds don’t seem to be as deep in bullpen bodies anymore. Over the past year, they’ve lost:

Buck Farmer
Justin Wilson
Lucas Sims
Jakob Junis
Fernando Cruz
Alex Young (due to awful trade)

Who’s left:
Alexis Diaz
Emilio Pagan
Yosver Zulueta
Sam Moll
Brent Suter
Nick Martinez (if bullpen)
Tony Santillan
Roansy Contreras (waiver pickup)

We keep hearing about this Zach Maxwell kid in the minors as a candidate. Could Ashcraft become a reliever?

C'mon Reds - give yourself a big ole' power hitting RF for Christmas. We all know you need one. You deserve it. Splurge on yourself.

They probably do have some stipulations for some players.

Kid I used to Coach who made MLB was select3d to pitch for team USA in some overseas games. His team didn't want him to do it so they paid him the $$ he was to make to NOT go...

Funny seeing the Reds linked to nearly every big name out there while not seriously being in contention to land any of them. Seems a like an ownership ploy to appear interested in winning at this point.

Agreed. But it ain't funny.

"Linked'....is a loose term.

Usually thrown out there by Said players agent or the team trying to prove to their fans they are trying to get better but in reality they know it won't happen.

I'd advise to not pay attention to any of it.

My favorite is when it leaks a tram is targeting or interesd in XYZ player.

Hell..I'm targeting Jessica Alba as my next wife......and these rumors are about as valid as my targeting of alba....ain't. Never. Happening.

I think you may see a past starter or two move to the bullpen. That's the typical evolution of pitching. Once you show or it's determined your not starting material, then you become a bullpen arm and some flourish that way. All these guys come up as starters because that's where the money is at.

All these guys came up as starters because of money? Lol.

It is as simple as this. In middle school, high school and college the best pitchers are in the rotation. Pretty much everyone with MLB level talent is a starter their whole life. They start getting reallocated to the pen in the minors. It is not a choice they make based on money.
