2025 Cincinnati Reds Thread

Mostly b/c I'm tired of reading about the lost 2024 season, and looking forward to next year.

1. I hope all the youngsters come back healthy.
2. Get a lock down closer
3. A power hitting outfielder

Will the Owner go out and spend some money on quality? He never did that for Bell and it ultimately got him fired. Will those clowns spend for Tito, or will it be the same old story. Buy cheap and hope to catch lightning in a bottle and when it doesn't work fire the manager.

This seems like the correct thought process for 2025.

Key is spending WISELY. Montas did not work out, but that was remedied. What about these guys at the top of the Reds payroll?
- Candelario - $15M - trade or we have him 2 more years. He needs to hit!
- Martinez - $12M - he has a player option - kinda hope he stays
- Pagan - $8M - he has a player option - really hope he opts out, but who would have him at this point?
- Junis - $8M - mutual options - let him go
- Maile and Suter - $3.5M each - both club options - bye-bye

With all the saved money, go get a power right fielder that can mash. Shoot for the stars - just add Soto to the young group that we have and do not spend on anyone else. I know that is almost a zero chance of that happening, but hey, I can dream for a couple of months...

All of the former hitting coaches have been fired which is a plus. I’ve never seen a team with a lack of plate discipline. Correction, I have but it’s always the Reds. Seems like the franchise doesn’t care about accumulating quality hitters

It's really hard to tell what the impact of hitting coaches are. Most of these players have individual instructors they have had since the minors or college, and anytime guys hit good, we applaud the player, not the coach. We only hear about the coach when the team's bad offensively.
I hope the MINDSET changes offensively. The Reds made a push to be more aggressive on the bases in 2024 and that paid off. Much like that, I'd like to see our collective approach change to more of a contact team, see more pitches.
Were the Reds hitters bad this season because of the approach, or because they're just bad hitters? Time will tell.
The thing that's always impressed me with Francona is he's been able to "coach up" teams, make them better than their talent shows.

Crazy idea, but what's the one thing that we complain about the Reds the most the last several years? Injuries, right. Is there some way to get a consultant who has anything to do with LeBron James conditioning and find out what he does to stay healthy? There has to be some way that the Reds can do a better job training their players.

Don’t think most players have a few extra million to spend solely on their health. LeBron reportedly spent over $2m/year on maintaining his health for availability back when he was with the Heat in his mid 20s. I’d imagine that cost has ramped up significantly between inflation, his age, etc.

And good luck convincing that cheap asz of an owner to invest in player health beyond the bare minimum of trainers.

Cleveland doesn’t have that much different talent from the Reds and their hitting stats suck. This guy is supposed to come here and fix the offense? I doubt it
Maybe not fix, but tweek. I look at a guy like Stephen Kwan, if we can cut the strikouts down, it will be great.

Reds don’t have a Steven Kwan on their roster. The offense also doesn’t need tweaked, it needs a total overhaul in players and coaching

Laughable. The Reds have been doing this rebuild for 2 years and you want them to blow it up and start over?

^^ I agree with you. Everything Sparty posts needs several grains of salt - he always wants things blown up and people fired.

However, the Reds only have 4-5 guys I consider to be better than average MLB players: Elly at SS, Steer in LF, Stephenson at C, Greene and Abbott in the rotation. It is a little early to include Lowder in this group, but he looks really good also.

Everyone else is average or a question mark due to performance or injury history. The Reds need to find out for certain one way or another about these question marks players: Marte, McLain, Encarnacion-Strand, Lodolo and Ashcraft.

These guys have their moments but are just average MLB guys: Friedl, Fraley, Candelario, Martinez, Diaz (and the rest of the bullpen).

So we really do not know much more now than we did at the start of 2024, except that Elly and Greene are indeed elite players, Steer is for real, and Stephenson can produce when healthy.

Yes. The roster is either trash or injury prone up and down the entire thing. It’s not like they’ve won anything with these guys. Go out and SPEND MONEY to get real MLB level players

I love it when people love to spend other's money. The Reds did spend some money last year, but it's never enough for some. This franchise made a commitment to drafting and developing players and that's what's happening. Let's let Dr. Francona wave his magic wand and see what we have. Aaron Judge will likely win the MVP this season, has stunk in the world series. Should the Yankees get rid of him and start over? Of course not. It's baseball. It's a marathon, not a sprint.

What do you mean “spend other peoples money?” I don’t see anyone with access to the Castellinis money that I’m aware of and if they do they are committing theft.

Have you been watching the playoffs? The teams who spend the money win. Yes, there are exceptions but they don’t come around often.

Everyone was sucking off the Indians this season but they lost in 5 games to a team that’s about to be swept in the WS. They really weren’t all that close to a WS title with such a low payroll

You are demanding that your favorite sports teams spend infinite amounts of money to buy players and that's not a proven way to win. We talk about this ad nauseum on here. Of the top 15 teams in payroll this season, 8 missed the playoffs (Rangers, Cubs, Giants, Cardinals, D-backs, Blue Jays, Red Sox and Angels). And that's with expanded playoffs. Meanwhile, 5 of the lowest 10 in payroll, Baltimore, Detroit, Kansas City, Milwaukee and Cleveland all made the playoffs. In 2023, the top 3 teams in baseball all missed the playoffs.

And if you watched the Cleveland / NY Yankees series that was hardly a walk.

It's easy for fans to just say go buy more players, but we see this not work out as much or more than it works. This season the Reds committed significant money to 3 guys, Jamier Candelario $13 mill, Nick Martinez $14 mill and Frankie Montas $14 mill. You happy with those decisions?

What are the goals here? I would like for the Reds to win a World Series again before I die. In the last 10 years only 1 time did a team not win it who was in the top 10 of active payrolls and it was the Braves at #11. Even Kansas City had a high payroll when they won. You get into the top 8 for payrolls and then it’s a crapshoot in the playoffs but YOU MUST SPEND MONEY TO WIN. That is COMMON SENSE.

The Reds have had two times since 2011 payrolls in the top 15.

This team just doesn’t spend enough to contend. Maybe we’ll get lucky and Elon Musk will purchase the team

Two comments.

The owners get their money from you and me, the fans. Whether we buy tickets & merchandise, or just pay our subscription fees to watch on TV, it is OUR MONEY. We have a right to expect them to spend a little to improve their product. As I have shown you before, the Reds are near the bottom in terms of "Revenue Percentage spent of player salaries". That is not acceptable.

Yes, the Reds did spend some last year. Candelario, Pagan, Martinez, Montas. However:
- They still spent less in 2024 than 2023, since Votto and Moose came off the payroll.
- They spent money on players that were largely ineffective. This speaks to the poor quality of the GM's team.

The Mets are annually one of the highest spending teams in baseball?? When did they win the world series last? My focus is and always will be the players on the field, not how much money they make.
