2024 Federal League

Just wanted to give a shout out to a great young man from Perry; Carson Basham. This past weekend he broke the school record in the 100 meters at 10.89. It’s been a long road for him after fracturing his hip in the first football scrimmage last August. He didn’t play a full game until week 7. Then he was mainly used at a WR, not a WB anymore. Not to mention after being the leading scorer as a sophomore on the Panther JV basketball team several years ago, his junior year he suffered an appendectomy right after the holidays and he really never got back to his old self again till the end of the season. He decided to forgo his senior basketball season and do more rehab & train for track. I wish him the best in his future endeavors.
Best of luck to the young man!

Panthers have a great kicker coming back in Brock Huggins who is consistently putting kickoffs in the end zone and today at Walsh College’s field hit two 55 yard field goals between college uprights.

Wow. Props to that young man. That’s a lot to go through as a high school kid.

As expected the Federal League teams dominated the D1 Hoover District in Track & Field. Glen Oak won the Boys and Girls Championships. Jackson was Runnerup for both.

Here’s the Top 5.
Boys:
1. Glen Oak 111
2. Jackson 88.5
3. Perry 71
4. Hoover 54
4. Dover 54

Girls:
1. Glen Oak 121
2. Jackson 103.5
3. Hoover 83.5
4. Perry 70.5
5. Louisville 58.5

Glen Oak boys were almost perfect in the sprints yesterday at the Hoover District meet.
They swept the Top 2 places in the 100 and 200 and also won the 4x100 and 4x200 relays.

In case anyone was wondering, all the Fed teams and all the other Stark County D1 teams except Alliance were here.

I thought Alliance was D3?

Perry is having some camp days coming up, one this Saturday, then again late next week on Thursday and Friday. Due to OHSSA regulations, some members of the team who are involved in track will not be able to do camp drills, just watch. No times were listed, so I’m not sure what time of day these will take place. Hope to be looking at numbers if I can find a time this starts.

Don’t shoot the messenger folks. Just reporting what was posted. I guess the proof will be in the pudding come August.
I get it your just posting what is on line but I don't think some of these dumb-es realize what it takes to bench 350 let alone 405 as a high school athlete but yet Perry seems to have 3 or 4 guys every year that can allegedly lift this amount of weight lol! to bad it doesn't translate into W's when it counts

While lifting a lot of weight is a good thing, it doesn’t automatically make one a great player. Like I said in a previous post, the proof will be in the pudding come this season.
I did hear from a player two move ins are on the team, one from Akron, a RB and a lineman from east of Perry.

Athletes from Federal League schools did quite well at the OHSAA D1 State Track Championships this weekend.
Green senior Caden McClure won the Pole Vault. Hoover junior Isaiah Barker won the Long Jump, narrowly beating Glen Oak junior Skylan King.
Jackson boys 4x800 relay came in 2nd in 7:40.02. This was a school and Stark County record and is also #8 All Time in OHSAA history.
Glen Oak boys finished 10th in the team race with 16 points.

As far as the other schools in Stark County, Marlington's Colin Cernansky won the D2 1600 and 3200. He concludes his HS career with 3 1600 championships, 1 3200 title and was a member of 2 4x800 relay winners. Marlington boys finished 5th in D2 with 28 points.

^^^
Cernansky's winning 1600 time of 4:07.53 was a new Stark County record, beating the old record of 4:09.54 which was jointly held by Josh Tormasi (Perry '09) and Noah Johnson (Hoover '23). Cernansky broke Stark's 3200 record earlier this year at the Wayne Invitational and became the 1st Stark County runner to break the 9:00 barrier in that event. The previous record of 9:00.88 was set by Nathan Moore of Lake en route to his 2021 state championship in the event.

That's just 1 of many great stories that the county's athletes created in track and field this spring.

Stark County athletes have now produced 119 instances of individual/relay state titles in boys track and field and 58 such instances in girls track and field. Additionally, 8 boys (Alliance 3x, East Canton 3x, McKinley 1x, St. Thomas Aquinas 1x) and 3 girls team championships (St. Thomas Aquinas 3x) have been won by Stark County teams. Stark boys have combined to win state in every event except the 4x100m relay. Stark girls have combined to win every event except either of the 2 hurdle races. Which event has Stark athletes won most often? Boys long jump. Barker's victory marks the 16th for Stark in that event.

How are the various teams looking in terms of returning starters? For Green, there should be three for sure on offense (Tyson Hunka, Mike Schaal, Nolan McKendry) and six on defense (Schaal, Evan Reed, Rhon Bruce, Anthony Fortunato, AJ Fortunato, Anthony McMichael). Also, if he is healthy when the season starts, Antonio Martin will certainly be a starter on both sides of the ball.

Guys who I expect to see step into starting rolls are linemen Cohen Lynch (listed at 285!), Dario Lombardi, who missed most of last year with an injury, as well as Kaden Gregory and Evan Georgiou at WR. Looking at the roster on MaxPreps, there is a fourth Schaal brother, Luke, who will be a sophomore and is listed as a linebacker. If he's as good as his brothers, he might get some varsity playing time.

Lastly, there are 32 incoming freshmen listed on the roster, which is very, very encouraging.

I’m not up on the names at this point in time, but the Panthers have 8 starters back on both sides of the ball. They lost a backup to the club high school rugby team. Another, who was a wrestler moved to Jackson, mainly because he wouldn’t crack the starting lineup at his weight and feels wrestling is his bigger ticket than football. I know of at least one wrestler who didn’t play last year, but did as a freshman, is back out as a junior. Again an open enrollment lineman from Canton and a move in RB from Akron have appeared. I think they are sophomores, but could be juniors. I haven’t been to any camp days yet, so I haven’t seen the team with my eyes yet.
The Panthers lost their DC to Dalton, where he is now the AD. With that said there is a very hot rumor a familiar face may be roaming the sidelines this season as the DC. Stayed tuned!

There’s only 4 Schaal brothers. Luke is the youngest.

There’s a certain poster from west of me, who I constantly crack up. 🤣 I’m glad he enjoys my posts and I bring some laughter to his day. 😂

Is this all sports, boys and girls?

Is this all sports, boys and girls?
Yes, for all sports, both boys and girls.

I also forgot to mention that Canton Lehman (closed in 1976) and Canal Fulton (merged with another school in 1953 to form Northwest High School) both have 1 OHSAA Team State Championship to equal Massillon and Lake. Both schools ironically won titles in Boys Basketball.
