2023 College Football Playoff

I’m done with this committee! How is Notre Dame any lower than #9??? Do these guys actually watch football?

Do they really think Penn State or Ole Miss would win at Clemson?

Did they see ND play Ohio State tougher than Penn State did?

Did they see ND beat the F out of USC while Utah and Washington barely beat them?

The rankings are laughably poor.

Does it really matter? Now next year you can start to complain, when they have to get 12.

Yeah, you’re right, let’s just turn a blind eye to utter incompetence that completely goes against what we’re seeing on the field.

Btw, when Ohio State gets turned into East Palestine in Ann Arbor later this month, it might well matter to the Buckeyes how Notre Dame is regarded.

What specifically do you disagree with?
I can make a case for any of the top five being ranked in any order. I can make a case that a few of the one loss teams are as good as most of the unbeaten teams. There is no way I can make a case for ND in the top ten. They had OSU at home, with OSU breaking in a new QB, and they lost. USC is going to lose two or three more times. Dabo is fighting for his life at Clemson. ND is lucky to still be in the Top 25, though I do believe they are one of the 25 best teams in the nation.

If you aren't in the top 4 it simply doesn't matter. I don't think NDs ranking is going to matter much to OSU given who the other 1 loss teams will have to beat, to remain 1 loss teams. Everyone's sos is going to level up to as the season finishes out.

Committee has, at least the last few years, routinely stressed who you beat matters. ND has 0 wins against ranked teams, 0-2 against the 2 teams they have played that are ranked, and just lost to a team that was .500 through 8 games. And someone’s shocked ND is only ranked 20th?!

OSU really bought themselves some margin for error being #1 in the first poll. Could lose to Michigan and still sneak in at #3 or #4 as long as they don’t get blown out again.
I know you posted this last week, so little behind the 8 ball, but as they mentioned on the show tonight, all 5 Power Conferences have teams in the top 10 and are alive for the a spot in the top 4.

If you end up with the following Champs, the question becomes who gets in:
ACC - undefeated Florida St or 1-loss Louisville
B1G - undefeated OSU or Michigan
Big 12 - 1-loss Texas
SEC - undefeated Georgia or 1-loss Alabama
Pac 12 - undefeated Washington or 1-loss Oregon

Plus in some of these scenarios you also have the potential for:
1-loss Florida State
1-loss OSU or Michigan
1-loss Georgia
1-loss Washington
1-loss Ole Miss

Now, odds are it won't end up this way, still plenty of more time for chaos. But in regards to your post last week, at this point in time, the Ohio State-Michigan loser would likely be on on the outside looking in, and they should be.

I would argue for Washington at least 2 or 3. If they run the table it will be hard to find a team with more quality wins.

My rankings:

1. Georgia
2. Oregon
3. Alabama
4. Michigan
5. Ohio State
6. Washington
7. Florida State
8. Texas
9. Notre Dame
10. Missouri

11. Oregon State
12. Oklahoma
13. Utah
14. Ole Miss
15. Tennessee
16. Clemson
17. USC
18. LSU
19. North Carolina
20. Louisville

21. Penn State
22. Kansas State
23. Duke
24. James Madison
25. Miami

Who do you think will be in the Top 4 by season's end?

I think we are gonna see the Top 4 shake out like this:

Scenario 1:
B10 Champion (OSU or UM only)
SEC Champion (UGA)
ACC Champion (FSU)
P12 Champion (Oregon or Wash)

Left out Texas, Conference Champion losers

Scenario 2:
ACC Champion (FSU)
B10 Champion (OSU or UM)
SEC Champion (Bama)
At-Large (UGA)

Left out Texas, P12 Champion

I dont see any scenario UGA gets left out. They are better than Texas and more well rounded than Wash & Oregon. If Oregon wins the P12, while UGA loses the SEC, I think it'll come down to defensive play. Both team play good Offense.

As long as they don’t repeat the farcical blunder of taking two Big Ten teams, I probably won’t have too many complaints. If there’s a path where UGA, Bama and Oregon all make the playoff, that’s what I’d like to see play out because those appear to be the three best teams in the country to my eyes.

If Penn St isn't a top 20 team, then neither is Notre Dame or Tennessee. I don't care how anemic they've looked against the two top 5 teams from your own rankings.

Notre Dame got blasted by Louisville (who you ranked 20, joke). and Clemson. Tennessee got blasted by Missouri yesterday and also lost to Florida. Sure they played Bama tough for a half.

Penn State hasn’t beaten anybody. Their best win is a home win over anemic Iowa. Notre Dame smoked USC, won at Duke, and was one yard from beating the committee’s #1 team, Ohio State. Drew Allar stinks — hasn’t lived up to the hype whatsoever. Their offense doesn’t break off any big plays. Frankly, keeping Penn State in the Top 25 is as much charity as that team deserves.

Tennessee doesn’t have any big-time wins, but aside from the egg they laid yesterday at a Top 10 team, they look much more dangerous to me than Penn State. It wouldn’t surprise me at all if Tennessee is neck and neck with UGA next Saturday.

Have a grudge with the B10?
I have a disrespect for the quality of the Big Ten. For many years, it’s been at best a two-team league, and at times a one-team league, with Ohio State carrying the flag for a bunch of fat and lazy coattail-riding programs who are content to get their pockets filled to job annually to the big two.

The Big Ten is 1-6 in the CFP from the 2015 season forward. Think about that. Big Ten fans love to look down on every non-SEC conference, but where are the results to allow that kind of attitude?

Unranked 7-4 USC
Unranked 6-4 Duke
Almost is still a loss. And I don't think Ohio State is a top 4 team. They're ranked #1 because of a resume, that keeps getting worse as the season goes on.

You're right, they don't.
Penn St hasn't laid an egg in either of their two losses.
Look more dangerous based on what?

They have a functional offense with a competent QB who can move the ball, and although they played poorly in the second half, looked fine in Tuscaloosa for the first half. Which is more than can be said for Penn State against their two relevant opponents.

Can’t wait to see what the horse’s a-ses on the committee do with Penn State on Tuesday night. Will they admit what any real observer knows? Or will they stay in La-La Land and pretend they’re good?

Tennessee should be in the 20s. Penn St should be 12-15 range.

4. Michigan
5. Ohio State
6. Washington
7. Florida State

This seems right to me, I may flip Michigan and Ohio State, just because the Buckeye win over Notre Dame is better than Michigan's 2nd best win. And honestly, even winning Saturday at Penn State, Michigan not that impressive. I really thought they'd beat Penn State by 2-3 touchdowns. I like that you give Oregon props with one loss. All we hear is that schedule matters and you look at resume over record and this looks good. I'd have Washington ahead of Ohio State and Michigan because I just feel their body of work is better. To me Florida State's win over LSU is as good as the Ohio State/ Notre Dame win.

PSU is a good team, certainly not great though. It’s not like they had their doors blown off in their 2 losses to 2 of the top teams in the country.

Penn State has as good a defense as anyone in college football. Problem is their offense has been very inconsistent and downright horrid in some games. The OC may need to be terminated immediately, aka USC DC. Franklin is a good recruiter but a poor game day coach. PSU needs to offer big money to an OC. I think Diaz is doing well as the DC.

They actually did terminate their OC.
