The first College Football Playoff poll will be issued Tuesday, October 31, 2023. Thus the start of the who is out, who is in debate.

For week one, the undefeated: Georgia 8-0 Michigan 8-0, Ohio State 8-0, Florida State 8-0,
Washington 8-0, Air Force 8-0, Liberty 8-0. (James Madison 8-0 ineligible)

The one loss contenders: Louisville 7-1, Oklahoma 7-1, Texas 7-1, Penn St 7-1, Fresno St 7-1, Oregon 7-1, Missouri 7-1, Alabama 7-1, Ole Miss 7-1, Tulane 7-1, and Toledo 7-1.

The CFP committee selection process is somewhat mystifying. Conference championshipships, strength of schedule, and comparative wins. Plus anything involving humans, the eyeball test undoubtedly figures in somewhere .

So to start discussion, my top 6 would be
1.) Georgia 2.) Michigan 3.) Florida St
4.) Washington 5.) Ohio State 6.) Oregon

What Say You?

A couple of things.

I saw at least one talking head leave Georgia out of the final 4 yesterday. I get this sort of behavior is attention seeking but give me a break.

What makes UM so worthy? They steal signs and play tomato cans. Have done so for three years now.

Georgia, OSU, Florida State, Washington.

Georgia, Michigan, Ohio State, Washington

Florida State and Oregon first two out.

All six of these teams control their own destiny to the playoff at this juncture IMO. CFP field should end up being Georgia, Ohio State/Michigan winner, Washington/Oregon PAC championship rematch winner, and Florida State.

Edit: I would also consider Alabama to be a "control their own destiny" team, although right now I can't see them beating Georgia, who seems to be starting to peak.

Yeah, Georgia is starting to look the part of a number one seed and Michigan's situation presents a quandary for the Committee. Depending on your point of view, Michigan is innocent until convicted and if you are honest, UM level of play is so impressive an undefeated season is well within its grasp without any scouting advantages. The Committee's mission is to pick the four best teams, not the four most deserving.

My thought, Michigan is only out if they lose, or their school administration acts against Harbaugh's program .

As things currently stand:

UGA
Ohio St
Washington
FSU
Michigan
Oregon

I think the final 4 at season end will be:
UGA
Michigan
FSU
Oregon

Here’s what I’d go with:

1. Georgia
2. Michigan
3. Oregon
4. Notre Dame

Next up:

5. Ohio State
6. Washington
7. Florida State
8. Texas
9. Alabama
10. Tennessee
11. Ole Miss
12. LSU
13. Oklahoma
14. Louisville
15. Penn State

10. Tennessee
11. Ole Miss
12. LSU
13. Oklahoma
14. Louisville
15. Penn State
Notre Dame???

I'd go
1. Georgia
2. Washington
3. Michigan
4. Ohio State

5. Florida State
6. Oregon

Georgia is the obvious #1. They may only have 1 ranked win, but they have won the previous 2 national titles. Even though its a new year, those still count towards perspective.

Washington is #2. Even though Arizona & Stanford gave them a game, the Oregon win carries a lot of weight.

Michigan is #3. They may not have beat a ranked opponent, but they can't control that. Again, there is some carry over from last year. Previous Big 10 Champ, previous playoff contender counts towards something. Theyve also averaged giving up less than a touchdown and averaged scoring 40 points. Sign stealing or not, thats hard to do.

The Ohio State & Florida State discussion for the #4 spot comes down to this: ranked opponent wins. Ohio State may play ugly, but they have 2 top 10 ranked opponent victories. It can be argued either way about who has the most "down" conference, the ACC or B10, but when Duke is one of the most competetive teams in your conference, its hard to make an argument that the ACC is better.

#6 Oregon- Oregon is good. If Wsshington slips up, possibly against USC, I would put them in before Florida State. The winner of the OSU-UM game will most likely lock theirselves in.

A lot of variables the rest of the way.

If Alabama beats UGA in the national title the commitee might put both in. So long as UM goes undefeated prior to OSU game, then one of those teams wins the B10, they should be in. I would take UW over FSU, and Oregon too.

My prediction:

1. Michigan (wins B10)
2. Alabama (wins SEC)
3. Washington (wins P12)
4. Georgia (at Large)

5. Oregon
6. Ohio State

Here’s what I’d go with:

1. Georgia
2. Michigan
3. Oregon
4. Notre Dame

14. Louisville
15. Penn State
Notre Dame? 3 day weekend over your way? And hitting the bar breakfast?

My prediction for tonight:
  1. UGA
  2. Ohio State
  3. FSU
  4. Michigan
  5. Washington
Recency bias of poor performances the past few weeks keeps Washington out of the top 4.

How the 1 loss teams will be ranked:
  1. Oregon
  2. Oklahoma
  3. Texas
  4. 'Bama
  5. Ole Miss
  6. Mizzou
  7. Louisville
  8. Penn State
If Oregon would have been more focused and finished the job in Seattle they would have a good case for #1. Either way they win a rematch in Las Vegas I think they are in over a 1 loss Big 12 team or loser of Ohio State v UM.

Ohio St #1 in first CFP poll.

OSU really bought themselves some margin for error being #1 in the first poll. Could lose to Michigan and still sneak in at #3 or #4 as long as they don’t get blown out again.

I think this is called the SOS for a couple playoff contenders (looking at you, Georgia and Michigan) being absolute doodoo so far.

Eye test those teams are clearly better to me. SOS both of those teams are currently outside of the top-100. Florida State is barely top-50. Ohio State is 15th.

Well, it looks like the only real consensus is that the top 6 teams are the top 6 teams. What order is all across the board. I think many, even Buckeye fans are a little surprised they are in the #1 spot. By Buckeye standards the eye test is poor this season. Notre Dame had them beat and needed to make one play and to Ohio State's credit, they won the game. But add to that Notre Dame got beat by handily by Louisville. Many say that Michigan is not being punished by the sign scandal but yes they are. If not for this, they'd likely be #1 or at least #2. Georgia, who's won back to back titles, and not lost this year. They've had some near misses, but if we're only going to worry in the end about wins and losses, then why worry about them now?
Here's my top 4, which mean nothing...

1. Georgia
2. Michigan
3. Florida State
4. Ohio State

I think they would had been #1 or #2 without the investigation. An impact, but a small one.
No. The committee was consistent all the way thru. Where records are the same, close wins against quality opponents are better than blowouts against nobodies.

Apparently Michigan's NCAA investigation had no bearing with the committee.

Agree. Which means that the committee lacks integrity. They should have placed them at 5. No rational person can view the evidence and say they are innocent. So they certainly shouldn’t be in the playoffs.

Prepare to be disappointed, because as long as they run the table, which they very well could, they will be in the playoff. Since when has integrity meant anything anymore. This is a show, cooked up by the TV networks and media. And when you consider the ratings and the interest the last decade, you can't blame them. The leagues get all this money, not just the teams in the playoffs, so it's beneficial to the Purdues' and the Indianas to take the poundings. It funds these schools entire athletic departments.

I feel like Washington deserves to be in the top 4. They have the best win according to the current rankings over #5 Oregon. The chairman mentioned them playing two teams close the last two weeks. I think I would rank teams based off resume as follows
1. Ohio State
2. Washington
3. Florida State
4. Georgia
They showed Georgia’s strength of schedule thus far as #100 and Michigan’s at #115. Of course the remaining schedule for both will be much tougher the next 4 weeks.

Well you will quickly see fan interest diminish if cheating is allowed.

Agree with your Top 4 and the order.
