General NFL Chat

The full NFL schedule comes out tomorrow. I predict that the New York Jets will overtake the perennially over-hyped and over-exposed Dallas Cowboys as having the most nationally televised games this year. That was once sacrilege, as the Cowboys are revered by the national media along with the Yankees/ Red Sox and Lakers. But, Aaron Rodgers and the New York-centric media will make the difference.

I look for the Jets to be a big flop this season. Rodgers isn't what he once was, and he likely had a better team in GB last year than what he has now. Salah will have intense pressure and it's not going to go well, and I for one will laugh at it.

I don't expect the Jets to take over the AFC, but they won 7 games last year and had five losses by less than one score. They did that without any semblance of QB play. With just average play they'd have been a plus .500 team and now they've improved the roster and will have back Bryce Hall, one of the better young RBs in the league. No reason they can't win 9 or 10 games.

One of those wins will be over the Browns on national tv.

Schedules come out tonight. Reveal party on ESPN at 8pm.

I need to know when the Las Vegas vs Pittsburgh game is. We are planning to go that game. Its in Vegas. Also going to play Wolf Creek GC.

Not only will the Jets be on plenty of national windows but don't forget about the Giants, look for both their Divisional games against the Cowboys and Eagles to be nationally televised. Also as a general statement the AFC East will see plenty of games nationally televised, the Dolphins do well and are being marketed as the AFC team for Latin America. ,

Can’t beat Vegas for a Saturday/Sunday football weekend - enjoy!

Per Andrew Fillipponi @ThePoniExpress

Week 3 (Sept 24) - Steelers AT Raiders. Steeler Nation 1st trip to Vegas comes early in 2023 season.

This I know, the Titans will play 17 games next season. One I hear is in London with the Ravens (hate the non USA games). They'll play home/ home vs. Colts/ Texans / Jags. Outside of that, I really do not care when/ where / who the Titans play. It's a week by week league based on health and how your team is playing. Just some good ole NFL marketing.

It started with the " America's Team" nonsense
Did this begin before there were teams in the South? An attempt to garner those fans?

We moved to NC in 1970 and soon found out folks were either Redskins fans (the bad guys) or Cowboys fans.

I joined a bus load of Redskin fans on a trip to Baltimore in the early 70's. Secretly, I rooted for the Colts. 🤫

How are teams compensated for the European games? Ticket sales, concessions, parking, travel etc. NFL cities lose a lot of revenue from tourists, hotels, meals. Anyone know?

I don’t know, that’s an interesting question. Not all teams want to lose a ‘home’ game to Europe or Mexico. I know Jacksonville has volunteered to give up a home game for a London game for the last 4 or so years. Their owner also owns oe did own a soccer team & stadium in London. He &!the Hags we’re trying to build a presence/following there with Jacksonville being the 31st smallest metro area of the 32 NFL teams there has been talk in the past they could someday ‘move’ to London.

The Steelers have a big following in Mexico, I could see them volunteering to play an away game there.

The Jags schedule release video was hysterical although thought the ending was pretty meh.

The Chargers had a lot of funny hidden Easter eggs throughout theirs. Some of the better references were:
- the Jets where rhe Chargers social media team reference cougar hunting with Zach Wilson, Sam Darnold’s out with mono meme, and a now deleted TikTok where the Jets social media team made it appear a football flew out of a teenage girls butt
- the Lions being one giant gambling addiction get help ad
- the Raiders having a casino cash out ticket with a QR code leading to a website that appears to buy tickets for Raiders fans and it’s a link to a google search on how to get a job.

well Biden just let a WHOLE bunch of new fans in over the southern border for your steelers....

Last season there was some discussion of allowing NFL teams to dress an emergency third QB for games. I haven’t seen or heard any more about this possibility. I think it’s a good idea. Anyone have a clue as to why the league wouldn’t consider this?

3rd Emergency QB was approved today

Steelers have a big following in Mexico? Never heard that before. It’s always been the Raiders and Cowboys that have been Mexico’s main teams.

Yeah they do. Not sure it’s as big as the Cowboys (geographically makes more sense) but it’s rather large.

A couple of snippets I found:

Believe it or not, there are more Steelers fans in Mexico than Rams fans in the US, earning the Acereros the unofficial title of “Mexico's team.” It is easy to understand why teams from California and Texas have many Mexican fans since those states host sizable Mexican populations, but Pittsburgh's case is odd.

Also:

The Pittsburgh Steelers long have been one of the most popular teams in Mexico. Now, the NFL has made it official that the Steelers’ turf, in part, extends south of the border.

Mexico was designated as an “International Home Marketing Area” of the Steelers for a five-year term beginning in 2022.

The Steelers have had current & former players attend Draft Parties in Mexico for the last 4 years.

Per a 2019 Forbes article:
The NFL football has become Mexico’s 2nd most watched sport. “The New England Patriots are the most popular team in Mexico — followed by the Dallas Cowboys, Pittsburgh Steelers, Raiders and Green Bay Packers — and played there in 2017.”

Yeah, afterward, I read the stuff about the Steelers and Mexico. I never had heard that before, so it's interesting that the Steelers and Cowboys were the dominant teams when American football was starting to be marketed in Mexico and they have remained hugely popular since.

I believe a teams success and marketing go hand in hand. In the Columbus/Central Ohio area during the 80’s & 90’s the Browns were the most watched team followed by the Bengals, Steelers and Cowboys. Now, when I pick my kids up from middle & elementary school I see far more Joe Burrow Bengal jerseys than any other team. I’d guess the average Browns fan is a bit older than most, Cleveland has mostly been a wreck since 1964.

I wouldn't say since 1964. They were in the playoffs in 1965, 1967, 1968, 1969, 1971, 1972...then the slippage began. Playoffs in 1980...not again until 1985...but then 1986, 1987, 1988, 1989...that's when the real cratering began. Up until 1990, the Browns only had seven losing seasons from 1946-1989, with no real prolonged losing stretch. Belichick came aboard in 1991 and took three years to implement his roster and finally produce a winning record and playoff team in 1994. They were likely headed that way again in 1995 and Art pulled the plug on the franchise and that was it. Since the return of the faux Browns in 1999, it's largely been a trainwreck and they are possibly the worst franchise in the NFL.

Ok, maybe not a train wreck in the 70’s but they were a distance 3rd in the AFC Central behind the Steelers and Bengals and then the Oilers w/ Earl Campbell. There never was any realistic hope for a Super Bowl. The 80’s, the Browns had a nice run that ended with a couple of gut wrenching loses to a one man Broncos team & John Elway. I don’t think any of those Browns teams would have been a favorite in the Super Bowl but the losses to Elway just left a negative vibe than continues to this day.

Since 1999, the Browns & Lions have been two of the worse franchises in all of North American sports (football, baseball, basketball, hockey & soccer) and as long as the current owner(s) remain, it is difficult to see anything changing.

New NFL rule on kickoffs:
A fair catch off a free kick (safety or kickoff) behind the team's 25-yard line results in a ball to be placed at the 25.
