What I watched this week...

Visiting Hours (Canada-1982)

Canadian slasher film!!!! A woman survives an attack in her home but now the killer has followed her to the hospital. We have a William Shatner sighting here!!!! Also, Michael Ironside plays a pretty good psycho.... I'm a sucker for 80's slasher films.... 6.0/8

Rituals (Canada-1977)

5 doctors go on a trip in the middle of nowhere to do some fishing and what not. This is an yearly event in which one of the group decides their adventure. Things don't go so good as we throw in some "Deliverance" as they find themselves being hunted one by one.... 5.0/8

Twixt (US-2011)

A washed up horror writer (Val Kilmer) discovers a strange mystery in a small town during a book signing which he decides to make into his next novel. Very gothy and much deeper than the surface.... 5.5/8

Grandmother's House (US-1989)

David and his older sister have to move in with their Grandparents house after the death of their father. David suspects that there is something sinister about them.... 4.5/8

Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters (Germany-2013)

I am a fan of the Hansel and Gretel story and loved "Henjel Gwa Geurete" but what would this version bring. Well, I loved the first 5 minutes of it but that was it. They were hunting witches right? Well, what they called witches looked more like demons and the lead witch/demon looked like she was in a Scandinavian Black Metal Band. I wanted a more serious dark tone but got silliness.... 2.5/8

Before Sunrise (1995) - 8/8
Before Sunset (2004) - 7/8
Before Midnight (2013) - 6/8

Really awesome and unique trilogy. Never really seen anything like it. Excellent writing, Hawke and Delpy have awesome on-screen chemistry too. If you aren't someone who despises love stories, I'd watch these.

Cherry Tree Lane (UK-2010)

Too real home invasion flick about some UK kids looking to seek revenge on a couple's son. Pretty raw with most of the action taking place off camera.... 4.5/8

Blood Song (US-1982)

Yes, it is another 80's slasher film. I must have been a good boy this week. This time a psycho escapes from the nuthouse and axes up victims but with a bit of a twist... you see this girl has visions of this guy and his kills and thinks it is in her mind until she see's him..... 5.0/8

The Last Will and Testament of Rosalind Leigh (Canada-2012)

If I had to do it over again I would of paid more attention to this film early on. The problem was that it starts very slow and hardly any dialogue just a narrator that I must of dozed off a few times. Apparently the narration became extremely important later on as well as some other things that I did not pay much attention too. This was a very atmospheric film that got incredibly creepy at times later on. It ended up being a very intelligent film with multiple interpretations but I took it as a low budget bore and did not get the full impact of the film. Much better than the rating I will give it.... 3.5/8

Monuments Men getting mediocre reviews so far. On the flip side, Lego Movie getting pretty great reviews. Not sure what to see this weekend now.

When they announced Monuments Men was getting pushed back to February, I figured it'd be pretty average. I'm still finishing up 2013 movies before the Oscars, but I'll try to see this soon. I love the cast too much not to.

Growing Pains (UK-1980)

After a couples 10 year old son dies by accidental poisoning they adopt a boy. Soon after strange things start to occur.... 5.5/8

Stevie (Spain-2008)

A couple adopt a young girl who claims that her make believe friend is real and is the cause of all the strange events. This was an English speaking foreign film... why? ... 4.0/8

The Indestructible Man (US-1956)

The Butcher (Lon Chaney) who vows to seek revenge of those who wronged him is executed but is accidentally brought back to life by a scientist. So bad that it is good? ... I liked it, ... 4.0/8

Monuments Men

2/8

Very disappointing and meandering movie in which an excellent cast on paper sleep walks through the movie. As a WW2 history buff I had to see this in the theater and the movies topic is fascinating but there was almost no momentum generated in this film. One of the central themes is whether it's worth dying to save the art and the movie falls flat on what should be the most emotional part of the film. Compare this to how Saving Private Ryan so magnificently handled a similar theme which explored the morality of risking multiple lives to save one life.

At the risk of getting dumped in the "debate" forum I can't help but think if this casts lack of enthusiasm for what was in essence a "patriotic" story wasn't related to their politics which can be crudely distilled down to "the USA Sucks".

Now contrast this to the obvious love Spielberg and Hanks had for the Saving Private Ryan story. IMO, these two guys represent old school liberalism which started from a foundation of loving this country but disagreeing on what is best for it.

Maybe I'm reading to much into it but how else to explain such a listless and lazy performance by the stars????

Die Screaming Marianne (UK-1971)

We got tricked by the marketing on this one. Sold as a horror flick it really is not....

Marianne is about to turn 21 and is set to inherit some serious dough from the death of her mother as well as blackmail papers on her incestuous step father. Fearing for her safety she takes off. She hitchhikes with a guy named Sebastian and after a short time he convinces her to marry him. Strangely enough their is a mix up at the rushed wedding and she is accidentally married to Eli, Sebastian's best man. This all takes place in the first few minutes of the film..... lol, anyhow all 3 soon fear for their life as someone wants Marianne dead..... 5.0/8

That's because the movie industry is overwhelmingly "liberal" or "left wing" in the financing, producing, directing, acting, and writing areas.

So why do I care about the obvious left wing bias of the movie and television industries? I care because movies/TV are the 20th/21st centuries most popular forms of artistic expression and they dominate culture in ways that are historically unprecedented. Any slant or propaganda of these mediums needs to be recognized and called out.

Consider that in the two most odious and evil empires that ever existed - Nazi Germany and Stalinist Russia - movie making was entirely dedicated to supporting the regime. Check out Leni Riefenstahl's Nazi epic "Triumph of the Will" (0/8 for content/purpose and 8/8 for visual technique in Vamps ratings) if you have any doubts that movies can function as ART and the crassest propaganda. BTW, this women was one of the greatest directors of the 20th century who pioneered much of the technique employed in modern movie making.

The fact that these two vicious regimes employed the movies so skillfully should be a warning flag to everyone to be on the lookout for the subtle and not so subtle left wing propaganda that permeates todays Movie/TV industry.

You can argue that much of the pathology that exists in today's USA can be attributed to the relentless and one sided attack on society's foundations by an America hating, capitalist deriding, standards mocking left wing power structure.

BTW, I'm not saying all the ideas of the "left" are bad, but I believe that history has shown that about 75% of the lefts agenda is a nightmare. And before people say that Nazism was "right wing" I say balderdash! The Nazis practiced left wing politics almost exclusively with the exception of their warped ideas around "ethnic and racial nationalism". In a nutshell, Nazism was left wing ideology for Nordic peoples only.

Well that's it for my soap box lecture of today!

Curious to know his response on Snow White and the Seven Dwarves, and how the Dwarves were clearly part of a left wing labor union.

Recently, you're a movie buff so take a second and do this exercise. Think about all the movies that you have seen that were made in the last 40 years and segment them into the following buckets. I've seen thousands of films that cover this time and my answers are in bold font:

Overtly right wing (1%)
Subtly right wing (9%)
Neutral politics (20%)
Subtly left wing (50%)
Overtly left wing (20%)

My argument is that true balance in the movies/TV would make for a better America and IMO would make for much better and interesting movie and television programming!

PS: Snow White would fall into the "neutral" category!

Dallas Buyers Club: 6.5/8

Couldn't believe I was looking at Matthew McConaughey on numerous occasions throughout the movie. He and Christian Bale have shown an unbelievable ability to transform their bodies to master a role.

Not a fan of movies with multiple big names in it. Too many preconceived notions over their past roles to overcome.

Dont forget SPielberg and Hanks did Band of Brothers as well as The Pacific. Two very good series.

I was debating on seeing this movie, but for whatever reason I just cannot get into it and i love WWII subjects. Much of it has to do with the task and not seeing them being able to pull off the the roles they were meant to. Seems as if they were just counting on the big names to bring people in and just pee all over the story behind it.

100 Ghost Street (US-2012)

Found footage film about some ghost hunters evoking a serial killers ghost in an abandoned building. I'm a fan of the genre but this was the worse one I've seen so far.... oh look, it is an Asylum Film.... no wonder ..... 2.5/8

Pale Blood (Hong Kong-1990)

I knew this one was going to be bad, not sure why I watched it but it really wasn't as bad as I thought... OK, I guess it was. A woman is hired to investigate the killings of women who have their blood drained from their bodies.... 2.5/8
