Week 9: St. Ignatius

I imagine Zepf was crying to Specht that he stole 7 of his sophomores and to compensate requested an equal number of juniors and Specht capitulated. Specht is getting soft as he ages
This is actually not that out of the ordinary. It's really the only way for varsity coaches to get a look on film of game action for juniors that don't see the field on friday's but will be potential contributors as seniors.

It might have been too long a name to get on a jersey or for the band to do script Golden Tornado.:) Likewise, Conquistadors is much more exotic and unique than Bombers.
Yeah-- I'd take back Conquistadors in a heartbeat...

Fun fact: the San Diego team in the old ABA was ALSO called the Conquistadors (or "Q's" as the locals liked to call them-- when they bothered to mention them at all)-- after making ABA playoffs in their first season (under head coach KC Jones--of earlier-- and later-- Celtics fame)- the Q's were about to introduce Wilt Chamberlain as their player-coach (a` la Bob Cousy with the NBA's old Cincinnati Royals) in 1973-- but then the Lakers sued to prevent Wilt from playing for "that team down south", and Wilt was restricted to coaching only that season-- and left the next season... here's the Q's mascot:

Anyway, I'd take the X Q's as a nickname over the (fairly generic) Bombers (it always sounded like a Roller Derby team nickname to me), even WITH all the negative baggage assigned to the Spanish Conquistador mythology in the modern era-- it's not as if X gets away scot-free without being criticized for using a "warmonger" nickname (adopted during WWII)-- and being called the Crusaders (with all the similar baggage that goes with that handle in the current era) hasn't seemed to be as big a stumbling block for Moeller or Holy Cross or others as being named after a Native American Indian image.

Whatever kinks X needs to work out, they can do it this Saturday at Byers.
This smells a lot like 2 years ago when a 7-1 Bomber team travelled to Strongsville to take on a 4-3 Ignatius team that was having QB woes.
And you posted this (post #25) in the game thread......

*Ignatius isn't a very good team. Defensively played well overall but no studs (Taliak might be the exception)

Offense is two steps below bad in the passing game. Lenihan runs with heart but has zero help. Offensive schemes do not fit the personnel trying to run it, and the playcalling/sticking with certain players at key positions has been awful.

Ignatius football has been on the downward trend for years.(And X beat some of the better teams before the trend)

X scored 60+ points last year on Ignatius. It would take 3 games for this Cats Offense to score 60.

X is very good on both sides, and again, Specht has owned Kyle head to head.

Facts."

Not falling for your tale of woes this time

1-7 isn't any indication? And the one victory was because the Mentor team couldn't get off a chip shot fg to win the game, despite Franzinger's attempt to call a timeout, thereby assuring the fg getting off in time.

Not out of the ordinary at other schools. That has NOT been the norm at X.

I don't see what the big deal is. What am i missing?
In the past juniors only play varsity and JV is for sophomores only (freshmen in special circumstances)
I watched a JV game recently and noticed a WR stand out amongst everyone else and according to the poster it was a junior wearing a different jersey number.
I had assumed all sophomores were playing in the JV games which made their performance and record pretty impressive given the fact that 7 sophomores were starting on the varsity.
Not sure how many juniors are playing "down" on JV, and with all the jersey swapping going on not sure that I want to figure it out.
I do know that the most productive WR in the varsity preseason was Betts (a junior) and according to the poster is now wearing #18 on JV (not the #82 he was wearing on varsity) and in the previous 2 JV games was sticking out like a sore thumb in a good way.
In the past I thought X always played sophs and frosh only on JV and I believe that to have been the case and often times the discussion was that they were constantly going up against JV teams that were playing a lot of juniors.

You may not be crying wolf this year but given the history of this rivalry I want the Bombers to enter the game thinking they are going up against the Ignatius juggernaut of old. It's been a rocky road for X the past season and a half and no game should be taken for granted. If a running clock is the result so be it.....but a loss would be 5 on the season and a probable loss of home field in week 12, if they survive week 11

Betts has only played 1 JV game ( Trinity ). This past Saturday against LaSalle the #18 was worn by Staderman who is a junior WR. Up until the Trinity game the only juniors that were playing down were a few OL i believe. You're correct in saying that most of the teams they play have had juniors playing. The fact that this X JV team is 6-2 with the amount of sophomore talent playing varsity is quite impressive. The next two years will be fun to watch.

Are you really that much of a loser that you dug out a post from years ago? I know you spend your days and nights studying X game films

why don’t you watch any one of the games Ignatius has been blown out in THIS year.

you really are a complete loser Reload

The two games they lost they brought Jr's down to JV, and last week thry brought down 2 players (that they didnt need too) on offense. Outside of that it's been only sophomores. That sophomore class is legit and they haven't relied on the Jr's. Their record is truly indicative of their talent.

No need to get so huffy-- he didn't call you any names (as he is WONT to do, in other instances)...

I understand, but wait until Saturday. You can see for yourself what has been to all Ignatius followers a shocking and unexpected total collapse of the program that Chuck Kyle built for so many years.

Thanks!......I think
I qualify as a loser for a lot of reasons but hardly for watching game film or taking a few minutes to quote a post.
I'm willing to cut PDC some slack....a long time Wildcat fan whose beloved successful legendary coach just retired and the program seems to be a dumpster fire

Forecast for Saturday is for periods of rain (90%) and a high of 59. But, it's just Mon., and up here you never know what will happen. Safe travels for those coming from Cincinnati.

Some corrections

QB Papesh is now a back-up. Ignatius is starting a sophomore QB now - Peyton Frontino
RB Sean Martin is playing pretty exclusively on defense
OL James Raynor is not playing football this season

The OLine consists of 4 sophomores and a junior
Of the starting WRs, 2 are sophomores
At FB is another sophomore

So, on offense - there typically are 8 sophomores playing.
Besides Merrimee, there is 1 other senior that gets extensive PT - #2 Max Ritt.
Word in Bomberville is that junior QB Quinn Woidke is back from an injury and may get the start

One correction - #12 Cody Haddad has not played a down this season - broke his arm in the McKinley scrimmage

Continuing the sophomore theme - Ignatius has played 3-4 sophomores on defense
Word in Bomberville is that Haddad will be back for the game this Saturday.

This is starting to look like the Trinity game from 2 years ago.
The Shamrocks entered the game with an 0-6 record.
Got some key players back and "upset" X 33-32.
Bomber fans be on alert

Remember going to the Jesuit Bowl at John Carroll University mid October in 2013 and the Cleveland area had just gotten pummeled by a winter storm and snowmen were a plenty in University Heights and the snow was piled up in the end zones of Don Shula stadium

You never know what to expect, so come prepared for anything. For those coming to the game: if you haven't been to Byers Field, it is a wind tunnel. The wind will make the temp seem much lower than it is, so be prepared to bundle up. Sometimes, it's brutal. The only good thing is that there is parking galore, as it is right next to a shopping center ( mall) complex.

Also the 2 schools put on a pretty good, combined tailgate (or tailcatting, as St. I's parents like to call it). Plenty of food and beverages (;) if you know who to see). Met plenty of nice people from Cincy at past tailgates.

Sounds like Dayton's Welcome Stadium... also with plenty of parking... Always wish that there was somewhere else better/closer/warmer that those games could be played.

Bomber offensive plays blueprint is inked
For a typical 60 plays from scrimmage game
Herbie pass 12 times
Vollmer pass twice
Britt carry 20 times
Vollmer carry 20 times
Napier carry 5 times
Bennett 3 catches
Klare 2 catches
McClatchey and Taylor 1 catch

It is out of the ordinary at St X. The coaching staff has a good feel for juniors at their ability to contribute as seniors without playing them in JV games

Only reason it was surprising to me is, because if they employed that strategy last year they may have been able to keep some guys they were planning on being contributors this year.

Would love to see my semi tongue and cheek suggestion of a Shotgun Split Back Formation utilized. Likley to late for the change. It would be fun to see this team do it.

I can't imagine being Steve. As the years have passed me by I have seen parents..... more likely to bitch and moan and offer suggestions on how to make things better. It has to be such a huge burden he doesn't need. Chuckle, that said, I am right on the Shotgun split back formation suggestion.

I hope tomorrow results in a win and allows them to find an identity they can improve upon before the playoffs.
