The Jesuit Bowl will be played at Byers Field in Parma, Ohio this Saturday October 14th when the Bombers (4-4) and Wildcats (1-7) square off for the 31st time.

The Cats lone victory was in Week 2 at Mentor (5-3) in a 16-14 squeaker.
This gave 1st year head coach Ryan Franzinger ’02 his first victory since taking over for the legendary Chuck Kyle who had been Wildcat head coach since 1983.

They were in jeopardy of winning a 2nd game in Week 4 but snatched defeat from the jaws of victory in a 24-21 double overtime loss to Austintown Fitch (4-3)

St. I’s has lost their last 6 games, a streak not experienced since 1947

The Iggy offense has been anemic scoring 68 points on the year and only 14 points in the last 4 games.
Defensively it has not been much better as opponents have scored 264 points, for an average of 33 points per game.

The Jezzy Bowl which began in 1991 and includes 3 state championship games (1992, 2001 and 2016) is currently tied at 15 wins apiece.

Despite recent woes St. Ignatius has beaten the Bombers in tight games in their last 2 meetings 28-21 in 2021 and 24-21 in 2022

Coach Specht’s Bomber teams have beaten the Wildcats 11 of 20 games (2004-present)

The JV kickoff is at noon (StX 6-2 and Iggy 5-2) followed by varsity at 3pm.
Both games will be played at Byers Field and can be seen on ESPX

GO X!

The Bomber offense continues to evolve.

The sophomore duo of Vollmer and Britt is proving to be a lethal rushing combination.
Versus LaSalle the pair combined for 280 yards rushing and 2 TDs while Herbie completed 6 pass for another 67 yards and a TD.

Defensively the Bombers stayed fresh limiting the amount of double duty by the defensive front 6
A pair of sophomores (Clapper and Reilly) had timely interceptions and combined for 11 tackles

Harbin Watch

With the final 2 weeks of the season upon us the Bombers are positioned to finish 6-4 and secure first and second round home games.
X is favored in Weeks 9 and 10 over opponents that are a combined 2-12 (St. Ignatius 1-7 and Trinity Catholic 1-5).
Victories in the last 2 weeks by St. Edward, King, Sycamore, LaSalle, Chatard, Lakota West and Withrow will help X reach the goal of playing on Ballaban Field in Weeks 11 and 12

Watching Clapper through the year, with his size and athletic ability, combined with his ability to seemingly always be around the ball, he may turn into a massively recruited player. If he can put on an additional 30-40 pounds and maintain his quickness, the kid would be an absolute stud.

Could also see him maintaining current weight and transitioning to SS in that Sonny Styles mode. So much young potential with the underclassmen, hopefully they will have a few leaders step up to drive their potential.

Some corrections

QB Papesh is now a back-up. Ignatius is starting a sophomore QB now - Peyton Frontino
RB Sean Martin is playing pretty exclusively on defense
OL James Raynor is not playing football this season

The OLine consists of 4 sophomores and a junior
Of the starting WRs, 2 are sophomores
At FB is another sophomore

So, on offense - there typically are 8 sophomores playing.
Besides Merrimee, there is 1 other senior that gets extensive PT - #2 Max Ritt.

One correction - #12 Cody Haddad has not played a down this season - broke his arm in the McKinley scrimmage

Continuing the sophomore theme - Ignatius has played 3-4 sophomores on defense

In summary for this game, the Bomber varsity will face what would typically be the Ignatius JV team
The new coaching staff has elected to go young this season for the varsity.

The Bomber JVs will be facing a 5-2 Ignatius JV squad that has many of their fellow sophomores playing varsity

Ignatius' varsity has played in 5 running clock games this season. Expect the Bombers to do the same on the Wildcats this Saturday

This will be Ignatius worst season record since 1948 - in 75 years.

Sophomores as Juniors
Clapper and Reeder: does Specht use them as LBs or safeties/adjusters?
Will Brayden Reilly return to the offense next season as WR or TE where he played freshman year?
The Harvey brothers have grown and are being used both as corners and wide receivers and playing well.
I could see Strayhorn and one of the Harvey's at the corners and Reilly and the other Harvey as receivers.

Next Season
OLine
: TKattus, Hester, Abercrombie, Lynch, Carter, Sweeney, Blakeman's, Stineman
DLine: Sulfsted, Boerger, Hertzman, Roberson, Hoerst
QB: Herbie and DVollmer
RB: Britt, Stegbauer and McDonald
TE: Reilly and Wassler
WR: Betts, Taylor, Shamsi, Betz, Harvey, Paddock
LB: Clapper, Seymour, Lehman, Schulte, Brady, Bareswilt
DB: Bishop, Reeder, Soloria, Horton
CB: Strayhorn, Harvey Bros
P: Maxam

Losing Haddad and Spellacy hurts....both are difference makers.
This Jesuit Bowl will likely set a record for the most sophomores on the field: 19 (12 Wildcats and 7 Bombers)

Read that Ritt is a dangerous kick returner having returned at least 2 kickoffs 82 and 96 yards for TDs

Neither of the Harvey's have played WR. They've brought down Betts and Statterman to play WR and they wore 18 on JV thus the confusion. I think depending on how much weight Reeder puts on he's going to get bumped to LB or DL. He's not fast enough to cover some of these varsity speedsters. I think Betz will be a TE. I think there is at least one JV player that got moved to Defense for depth that will go back to WR next year that could compete for some time.

This is a good teaser. Lot of serious talent on that list. There might be a couple current freshmen that could be added to varsity. As a whole the freshmen class is not as deep as the sophomore class but there are some kids on that team that could show up next summer ready for varsity football.

If X can’t put a running clock on this awful Ignatius team, then wow.

The offense is completely inept for Ignatius, so X will have plenty of chances to score.

So, building for next year, eh? I'd imagine that early in his career, the current HC's predecessor chose to do likewise, at some point-- he wasn't winning state titles annually in his first ~10 years on the job, was he?

Conquistadors - Name your score, as long as it's over 40

Golden Tornado - 7
That was Ig's prior (original?) nickname? Why lose that one?-- MUCH more original and unique than "Wildcats"... only really competing with (University of) Tulsa for that moniker (and even then, it's the difference between a "dry" and a "wet" storm-- so it STILL woulda been pretty unique)...

...and badly coached.
But I thought the IG faithful were EXCITED about the "Zinger" taking over-- with many saying that it was LOOOOONG past due, with his predecessor having overstayed his "sell-by" date....???

It's the OC. And, as for me,I wanted an outsider for HC. Tired of the same old. Need new life and energy.

It might have been too long a name to get on a jersey or for the band to do script Golden Tornado.:) Likewise, Conquistadors is much more exotic and unique than Bombers.

Or they thought names of natural disasters and conquering marauders were images just too horrible for the kids and general public to handle
