Water Polo 2011

Awards

Yes, in looking over the list again, 60% is a pretty high number for the state teams, maybe my protest was unwarranted. Perhaps huge adjustments to the voting process are not in order, but as Mukisa suggested, some tweaks could be made to make the process fairer. There does seem to be some strange things going on with the voting. I believe some coaches purposely left some players off their list to allow their own player to benefit. I also believe there should be a separate voting for player of the year for both boys and girls, rather than relying on the top vote getter for all state teams. On the coaches polls taken throughout the season also, some coaches were voting for the worst teams as number one or abstaining. This may represent some strategy to skew the poll or maybe just disinterest, I am not sure. However, when voting for post-season awards, the utmost care should be taken to ensure the right players are getting the awards or there should be no awards. Politics should be left out, period (BTW, I know I am dreaming on that statement).

I must watch more polo than the normal fan. If I'm there I watch almost all the games. Maybe I need to get a life or something but I figure I'm there and it beats trying to find other stuff to occupy myself with, love the game. I still believe the list is pretty solid from watching and making mental notes on who plays well for their team and needs to be defended the most to stop that team. Plus who is doing the most defending and scoring for their teams.

The question would then become who nominates players for the "All- Ohio" team and how? Do only the coaches vote or are the refs involved like the tournament teams? Are the voters being objective or do they have there own agenda? Is it possible that some athlete got passed over for nomination by the folks in charge of nominating for some reason? Are there restrictions on the number of players from each team that can be nominated? Is it possible that some of the athletes are getting noticed by the voters for what they have done over their entire High School career or it strictly just one season?

Unless all of the requierments to make the "Team" are documented and released those of us on the outside looking in may never know, maybe we shouldn't know. Be happy for the players getting recognition after all it is special for them. If someone did not make the "Team" and thinks they should have be understanding of their disappointment. If they get another chance maybe it will motivate them to work harder, that's a good thing.

I wish they could all be recognized for what they are accomplishing but it just is not possible. In life not everyone gets to be rated the best, some end up getting more than others and some rise from disappointment to out shine everyone else. Life lessons isn't that really why they are here?

While it may not be a perfect system over the past few years it does seem that the better players are getting recognized.

I'm not sure when the fans vote for professional team "All-Stars" that it is always the best players that get recognized.

Just my own humble opinion and I don't have water polo to watch right now so I had a couple of extra minutes. Hope you all don't mind.

GREAT! Love fans that watch other teams play.

Each coach nominates their kids for spots. You can nominate all of your kids on your team for 1st team if you want. There is no limit on where you nominate kids.

Head Coaches then vote. Being an assistant, I do not get a vote. I might confer with with the head coach, but I do not get a vote. Each team gets 1 ballot, and they rank their players. (That said - the worthington coaches get 2 votes...because TW boys coach is also the WK boys coach. So they get 2 ballots, and the same person can fill them out). You have coaches voting for players they may not have seen much of except a tourney or 2. But, coaches can talk to other coaches about their players as to where they should be ranked if there is a doubt.

Once they vote, I, along with any other asst. coach there will tally up the votes. Top 9 field players get 1st team. Top goalie gets 1st. 2nd goalie gets 2nd team.

All other field players nominated for 1st team that did not get selected, get bumped down to the 2nd team ballot.

Repeat the process. Except for goalies, as they are all decided on 1st team ballot.

Its not the most perfect way to do it, and it has some flaws, but I think year after year its a pretty solid list. Every now and then you get some spots where you scratch your head, but that will happen anywhere.

What would be neat is a "media" poll, if you will. You see college all-conference teams have a coaches poll and media poll. Would be fun to set up a non-coaches poll.
