Three teams drop out to avoid playing Marion Local in playoffs…

Ok so if they don’t make money, then it can’t be a money grab.
Enough home team fans will show up. Few visiting fans.

Not sure if I'm thinking through this correctly but...

$10 tickets, even if 100 people show up, that's only $1000. But spread that across 28 regions... $28,000 to the almighty OHSAA and that's being very very conservative. Add in #2 vs #15, #3 vs #14, and #4 vs #13, that's an EASY $100K, most likely a LOT more than that.. They want these game for the $$$, plain and simple.

Maybe Ohio should add an open division, a division that would include these teams that continually win their division year after year. Other states do it, and the Division 1&2 teams do not own it.

Not a big deal. The expense for the other programs to play at ML probably just not worth it. Fort Recovery is close and many of those kids probably know each other or have relatives on the other side.
I thought the rationale behind expanding the playoffs was to give more kids the opportunity to compete...now we are saying only if it fits on a bottom line somewhere?

You have made me reconsider my stance as well. At first thought it seems cowardly. But your take on the teams simply trying to keep a 24 man roster alive is valid. And I agree that it was the OHSAA’s greed that created the problem. They are putting kids at risk by allowing 16 teams from each region. I don’t see anything wrong with implementing “in D6 & D7 only 8 teams will Qualify.
There's nothing wrong with in all divisions only 8 will qualify per region.

#7 NB -51
#10 Lockland - 0

12 people made the trip from Lockland.
To be fair, I think lockland had a similar crowd for a basketball district championship game at UD many years ago. I just don't think they travel well for any game.

What expenses does OHSAA have to cover? It's a money grab. They make money...put out very little if any $$
They pay the officials. In the later round games I know they pay a fee to the host site as well, but I’m not sure if they do that in the opening rounds. Costs are certainly minimal at this stage.

Any risk of losing money? No. Nada.

Money Grab.

They are just promoters...middle men.

No.

Hilarious.

Kind of on a different subject-

Why is Marion Local’s non-conference schedule so bad? Clown schedule if you ask me, great, you beat a handful of teams that has girls on it.

More football is always better

I mean one was a D3 team and the other is a state qualifier in Indiana. Not sure if either of them have girls on their teams.

Last year we had Wapak on our schedule and I wouldn't call them bad.

So what we’re teaching our kids is,when the odds are against you just quit. SMH
No we're not teaching that.

When a team has struggled through a disappointing regular season (perhaps multiple rough seasons in a row), it is a realistic response for both the adult coaching staff and the teen athletes to not want to put in another week of hard work simply to get trounced in an embarrassing way and possibly suffer injuries that could impact future seasons (like basketball).

If the teams who are dodging Marion were pitted against other schools that they were at least close to competing with they'd likely be all in.

It doesn't seem like it's helpful to a struggling program to end the season with a significantly deflating loss.

To allow these opt-out schools to be "off the hook" is simply an acknowledgment of reality.

Wapak is certainly not bad. That said, they could really really REALLY use an upgrade, esp. now that Wapak is off. Hope they figure out a way. No offense I say the same thing to my Kirtland friends. At the very least I wish I could convince both teams to schedule each other every year. I don't care who thinks who or what is the holdup.

Yes, very well stated. Football isn't basketball or baseball. It's unique. There is absolutely no reason to have 16 vs 1 seed in football....in any division, unless it's the top 16 in a much lesser populated group of teams. It's useless and potentially dangerous.

Week 2 is still open. Maybe Perry has an opening. Coach Gecewich if you're reading this (which you are not) ML would like to remind you of what you left 😉

If Fort Recovery played Lockland’s schedule they would be 7-3 at the absolute worst. Lockland had to cancel a game mid season due to number issues. Great call on Lockland’s end to not play ML… plus it gives the kids at FR, who are more physically prepared, to make a memory!
Make a memory??? Lol how they already played Marion local and lost 63-0

An example here or there, especially an example from the MAC who has a league filled with high quality championship caliber teams, doesn’t change the fact that some of these teams struggle to simply put a squad of 20 on the field. How many are on the Marional Local roster. I have no idea but I’d bet they are dressing 80 kids. I bet they have a roster larger than many D1 and D2 schools.
Marion Local's published roster has 67 players (Freshman thru Senior)

It looks weak, but I almost don't blame them and think it takes some guts....and makes a point to the OHSAA....Traveling hours to play a game that'll end as a shutout would be tough. This is 100% the fault of the OHSAA
