The Official 2024 Reds season thread

I'm sure teams will be lining up to offer the Reds a "proven Outfield bat" in exchange for what you call "damaged goods". You do understand how trades work, right? The other side has to agree...

If the Reds trade Lodolo in the off-season, they would get either a very low prospect or a draft pick. He is inexpensive. The Reds need to keep him and hope his health holds up. We have seen the upside, in short spurts.
All I'm saying is don't count on him in '25. He's brittle. The Reds will likely have to go the free agent market for the bat.

What a disappointment this season has been. Lodolo, McLain, Ashcraft and Greene just can’t stay healthy. Marte and CES with a lost season. Connor Phillips and Chase Petty taking a major step back. As excited as I was for the future of this team I am now doubting any of those guys panning out. Seems like they are all made of glass

Considering all those guys together have less than a year of major league time, don't you have to give them a chance to prove themselves? I'm not calling them reliable, I'm just saying you don't know what you have yet. Remember McLain came up first last year and really started the upswing.
Oh there's no doubt you give them a chance but you can't oversell it. Everyone thought when Marte came back after his suspension that here we go. Big time THUD!
I'm afraid McClain is Nick Senzel. All of these dudes are using PEDs in some form. They make a body very susceptible to muscle injuries.

Oh my goodness please don't say that!!! Sadly I think Senzel's issues was as much physical as it was emotional / behavioral. I recall one game early in his career he left a game in Milwaukee due to vertigo. Or that what was reported. Senzel was later on Jim Day podcast and talked about some of the emotional issues he had as a young athlete. I think his issues was as much anxiety and things of that nature. Of course today that's never discussed openly because of HIPPA.

At this point I think we need to give these guys the benefit of the doubt. Heck Lodolo was pretty healthy at TCU. It's just with the major league workload, he may not be able to handle that. For that I blame more the way pitchers are trained today . We have too many pitch counts for guys all the way up to college.

But overall I agree, the Reds need to have a plan B, but even so, I mean you have to give these guys at least 100 games to see what you have. I just want this franchise to pick a strategy and stick with it. Because of GABP, many think we need to be a home run hitting team. We don't have home run hitters, just simple it down. Get on base, go to the plate NOT to make an out. This team ranks in the lower third in baseball in about every offensive category. They are now 2nd in the league in stolen bases, and near the middle in triples. Need more contact in '25.

Calling Greene a disappointment is just wrong. He took a major step forward and is truly an ace at this point. Check the numbers. He simply got a minor tweak and the Reds have smartly shut him down instead of having him throw meaningless innings in September. And the Reds rarely do smart things, so I am celebrating this.

I didn’t call him disappointing in any way other than him not being able to stay on the field

Great game yesterday! Red's are not out of this yet, but they need to make a big move. Problem is Chicago has made it difficult by going 9-1 in the last 10. They also do not have David . Still to steal one from the Brewers is a real accomplishment. As the saying goes, you can't win a playoff spot until September so here we go! The next 15 games will determine if they will get back in it, or if we flip the page to next year, again. It will take something like 19-7 from here on out in September, very tough but not impossible.
You trippin'.....:ROFLMAO:

Gonna leave this here in case anyone wants to bookmark it for the next time 14Red says it doesn’t matter whether anyone goes to games.
During an age of TV contract wars between providers it’s impressive multiple MLB teams found a way to strike a deal with an inept provider. No other leave is better at killing themselves than the MLB and their members.

Rhett Lowder, start #2 today.

Major league baseball does a terrible job of making it's product available to most people.

Not exactly what we thought we'd be talking about in September this year. Hopefully next September it's different. Since the NFL football season starts tonight, do you think football players kind of smirk at some of these baseball injuries?

How goofy of a Reds season has this been??

Atlanta 2-0
NY Yankees 3-0
Philadelphia 4-3
LA Dodgers 4-3
Houston 3-0
10 over 500 not bad for that group. I think if they a finish September out the way they have started it they could get to those 84 wins, perhaps more.

4 "W" in a row. Who would have guessed? Next 10 days are 10 road games. 3 with the scorching hot Mets, one makeup game in ATL, 3 in St Looey, 3 with the Twins. All teams in the hunt. With this pitching staff, a painful stretch.

As much as we want to look at this no name pitching staff now, the pitching has been good, and it has been good most of the season. The offense has been the real drag of this team all season long. Friday, bullpen game, you cobble together 9 innings and 4 runs give up with Cruz, Williamson, Farmer, Pagan Santilan and Diaz and you lose in extras on a 2 run homer off Wilson. Saturday, Junis gives you 5 innings of 1 hit, 0 run ball, Moll gives it up, but you don't score so you lose 4-0. Today you get 4 2/3 innings of 2 hit no run ball from Aguiar, Santillan gives up one and Wilson, Farmer and Diaz gives up 0 and you win. Over 3 games, you give up only 11 runs with a bunch of guys you really had no plans for using for alot of those innings. Meanwhile, offensively you score 7 runs in 3 games.

Compete? Ok, I'll backup.
In January of 2024, this was the Reds projected lineup, this what we THOUGHT we'd have for 2024.

1B - CES/ Candelario
2B - McLain
SS - Elly
3B - Marte
Utility - India
RF - Fraley/ Benson
CF - Friedl
LF - Steer
Util - Fairchild
C - Stephenson / Maile
Starters
Montas
Greene
Ashcraft
Lodolo
Abbott
Martinez

Bullpen
Diaz
Farmer
Sims
Suter
Moll
Wilson

Give or take a few, this is what we thought we had. Now you take that team, subtract McLain, Marte, Friedl, after 30 games CES. I'd have a hard time saying this team has not competed. This team still owns series wins over Atlanta, Philadelphia, the LA Dodgers and the Yankees.

To me the foundation is there. I think at this point for 2025, tweaking only needs to be done. Obviously for this team to accomplish anything, the health of the players has to improve dramatically. With that said, the Reds go into the offseason needing a power bat or two and resign or address the bullpen holes and it's go time. I know none of you like to hear this but the job of the front office is to build the roster.
Another tweak is that I feel our offensive philosophy has to get much better. Too many strikeouts, poor contact plays. The teams on base percentage needs to improve. The baserunning needs to improve. I do think with a young team you would expect some of these things to take care of themselves.
Yawn.
Keep sniffong those Jocks and drinking the castellin juice.

I don’t think anyone will disagree with this assessment. Unfortunately as we head in to 2025 none of the offense issues have been addressed. I would imagine the front office will expect MCClain and company on the band aid list will provide all we need.
Nothing in the present lineup provides much hope as well. ELDC, India and Stephenson have contributed all season. I look for another second tier outfield signee to bolster that light hitting outfield contingent. lol.
How long does it take to recover from a bruised elbow btw? We are at a month and counting.
