The Official 2024 Reds season thread

The 10 teams fortunate enough to have the Reds on their remaining schedule have to be licking their chops.

The Reds currently have a 3-man rotation (Martinez, Spiers, Aguiar) with 10 relievers. They’re rostering AAA players (Legumina, Kelly, Aguiar, Hinds, Benson, Maile) and DFA pickups (France, Rosario, Dom Smith).

The Reds aren’t catching enough heat for the horrible botching of the past two trade deadlines. This year’s was even worse than last year.
Yup. It is barely an MLB roster at this point.

Replace the manager?
Ownership.that GAF about putting a product on the field to compete.

They've ran the numbers....they know spending a lot more won't guarantee wins or more revenue and since they have so many fans who will.fork over money for a shoddy product so why bother?

Get prepared for a long-winded lecture from another poster about how the Castellini family doesn’t throw any pitches or strike out or get picked off on the bases or make errors in the field.

It's ok. I don't read then anyways.
Jock sniffers are gonna sniff jock and will support anything this POS owner will put onto the field.

Compete? Ok, I'll backup.
In January of 2024, this was the Reds projected lineup, this what we THOUGHT we'd have for 2024.

1B - CES/ Candelario
2B - McLain
SS - Elly
3B - Marte
Utility - India
RF - Fraley/ Benson
CF - Friedl
LF - Steer
Util - Fairchild
C - Stephenson / Maile
Starters
Montas
Greene
Ashcraft
Lodolo
Abbott
Martinez

Bullpen
Diaz
Farmer
Sims
Suter
Moll
Wilson

Give or take a few, this is what we thought we had. Now you take that team, subtract McLain, Marte, Friedl, after 30 games CES. I'd have a hard time saying this team has not competed. This team still owns series wins over Atlanta, Philadelphia, the LA Dodgers and the Yankees.

To me the foundation is there. I think at this point for 2025, tweaking only needs to be done. Obviously for this team to accomplish anything, the health of the players has to improve dramatically. With that said, the Reds go into the offseason needing a power bat or two and resign or address the bullpen holes and it's go time. I know none of you like to hear this but the job of the front office is to build the roster.
Another tweak is that I feel our offensive philosophy has to get much better. Too many strikeouts, poor contact plays. The teams on base percentage needs to improve. The baserunning needs to improve. I do think with a young team you would expect some of these things to take care of themselves.

I'm pretty sure we have been telling you all summer that the roster is the front office's responsibility. Maybe you were saying that "tongue-in-cheek".
Injuries happen to all ball clubs. That's why it it so important that a front office acts to counter those injuries. Once McClain was lost for the year, Marte was suspended and CES hurt, nothing was done.

Well, before every one of our starting pitchers decided they've had enough baseball for this season our roster was always much better than our record....Even missing McLain, CES, and them guys our roster was as good or better than Kansas City, Arizona, Giants, Cubs, and Detroit.....Regardless, of roster composition I just don't believe David Bell is a winning baseball manager.
It is beyond time to move on. This bunch needs a dude with a bit of an edge running the team, and David Bell ain't that guy. Plus, he looks like he's aged another ten years every time I see him interviewed. He's only 51, looks like he's 71. I think he's run out of ideas on how to make it work, and is ready for it to be over......

Agreed. I think Bell will mutually agree to move to another role in the organization after the season.

While I suppose I can feel a certain amount of sympathy for the bullpen guys, overall I really have no sympathy for the players that they’re in the spot they’re in. These guys have slept through almost every weekday afternoon and Sunday afternoon game all season long — which is a big factor in why they’re out of the race. Then you have delusional comments from India about being a playoff team, Maile yesterday saying they’re right there and grinding, etc. My main takeaway is “Screw you, go die on the vine for another month in front of an empty stadium.”

The stadium wasn't empty yesterday. There was a solid 1100 to 1200 people there. Where else are they gonna go?

But Thomas Rhett is playing after tonight's game, so it will be packed. As I've said many, many times, attendance isn't a big factor anymore. There are many teams in baseball with less attendance than the Reds and no one is moving (other than the A's, but it's taken them 25 years to move, Oakland just proved they didn't want them anymore).

This team....wow. Down 5-0, comes back, Will Benson of all people put us up 6-5, and Emillo Pagan looks like a BP pitcher. I'll tell you what, and we've seen this from the Reds this season, the A's look pretty impressive the last two days. They got some sluggers on that team.

Baseball is a funny game.

So when/if the Reds get swept by Oakland, that should be the end for David Bell. The question is should they fire him now or wait till the end of the season? I believe they'll finish 15-20 games under .500. Who should be their next manager? I think they'll bring up Kelly from Louisville. Thoughts?

If Bell is gone, my money is on D. Johnson. Can get him fairly cheap, jmo. No way they go outside of the organization.

They wouldn't, Kelly is the manager for the AAA team, players love him and he'd probably cheaper than Johnson. If Johnson's the manager it may be more of the same especially with the pitching.

Time for serious culture change. It has to be someone from outside the organization.

I'm just waiting for the day when the Reds ask for guys in an hour and a half radius of Great American Ballpark who have thrown in college baseball the last 3 years to show up at the stadium for an open tryout. You've got 13 pitches on the active roster, and yet they act like no one can pitch? It is perfectly permittable to have a grown man throw a few innings everyday if necessary. A professional, well conditioned athlete should be able to handle that workload.

At some point you just have to tip your hat to the Brewers. They did about as much to cut their own throats going into the season, have had multiple guys out with injuries and yet here they are, dominating the NL Central. I'm not sure if you took them, man for man you'd be overly impressed from a talent standpoint, but they have a bunch of guys who get on base, they are 7th in batting average and 3rd in ERA. It's just a bunch of solid baseball players.

Pat Murphy would have been a great hire by the Reds. Unfortunately he has the Brewers playing even better than in the past

Phenomenal job by Bell tonight. Earned a well deserved win . Probably buys him a week reprieve from being fired.

Saw the White Sox are only 12 games shy of setting a new record for number of losses in a season.

But is it the manager? I mean Craig Counsell won with the Brewers too? You have to credit the players who do the work. The Brewers seem to find a way to replace players who either are traded or injured and the just keep winning.
