The Official 2024 Reds season thread

Tonight could be official elimination night. A Mets win plus a Reds loss would mathematically eliminate the Reds.

Reds win! Steer with a 2 run homer to put the Reds up. Brandon Williamson starts and comes out with elbow pain. Put a fork in him, he's done. This is about his 3rd injury this season and 5-6 over the last few years.

AEW has a countdown for the day the Reds are eliminated???
A countdown? No. But I pay attention to the standings pretty closely, so I’m aware of when the Reds are facing elimination, the same as I’m aware of what remaining record would put the Sox into the books as the worst team in modern MLB history.

Results matter and are noteworthy. Especially when the alleged trade deadline strategy was “giving this team every chance to win.” Nick Krall should not remain employed after totally botching the past two trade deadlines.

Well, this team is in the 2nd year of a rebuild. The rebuild part is over and now it's the development process. They are not, with good reason, going up young resources to "go for it" in a season where they likely could not make a deep playoff run anyway. I don't understand this fantasy football mentality where you think GM's can just purge players and add others with not consequences. The big rallying cry going into the offseason is that the Reds need a power bat in the outfield, and I agree with that. But looking at the FA list, it's thin and the ability for the Reds to "outbid" other teams is difficult. So if the Reds don't get a power bat or two for the outfield, it may not be because Krall wasn't trying.

I think you need to take the phrase "giving this team every chance to win" with a grain of salt. I'd add to that "within reason" and "we're not giving up high level prospects". So when you bake that all in, the "giving this team every chance to win" can be a pretty hollow statement.

A rebuild insinuates there was already something there to be rebuilt.

This franchise has not won more than 83 games or make the postseason, and the fake 2020 'season' doent count, since 2013.

If you want to say a rebuild, its more like 11th year of a rebuild, but go ahead and keep drinking Castellini's koolaid

How many players on the current team was on the team just 3 years ago in 2021? Tyler Stephenson, TJ Friedl, Spencer Steer, Hunter Greene, Nick Lododo, Luis Castillo, Buck Farmer, Tony Santillan and Fernando Cruz. That's it, 9. And all but Buck Farmer and Tyler Stephenson were anywhere close to being a full time player. You can't keep punishing the current team for the sins of the past. 11 years ago, Elly was 11 years old. Many of these guys weren't even in high school.

Tonight is exactly why Bell will be fired after this year. Junis, 1 run, 2 hits thru 6. Takes him out for no reason, reliever immediately gives up a moon shot and loads the bases. This is about the thirtieth time Bell has snatched defeat from the jaws of victory this season!

Steer wasn’t traded for until the mid-2022 Mahle trade. He debuted shortly thereafter. Greene and Lodolo debuted to start the 2022 season. Those three were not on the major-league club in 2021. Buck Farmer wasn’t a Red in 2021.

And obviously Luis Castillo is no longer a Red.

So you’re down to 4 guys: India, Stephenson, Friedl, Santillan.

This post takes the cake. You always try to act like a Reds expert, but this is embarrassing.

- No mention of India, the 2019 rookie of the year
- Luis Castillo has not been on the Reds for 2 years
- Greene, Lodolo and Steer were not in the MLB in 2021
- Farmer was on Detroit in 2021

Either lay off the drugs, or do a quick lookup before posting something 90% wrong.

It was reported last evening that the Brewers have clinched the division and qualified for the playoffs for the 6th time in 7 years. Our always rebuilding Cincy Redlegs have qualified for the playoffs 6 times in the past 44 years in comparison, including the joke 2020 season.
Williamson needing TJ surgery just adds to the fun. I've not heard how my guy's live BP session went yesterday, 10 games left?

That sucks. Cleveland has made the postseason 7 times since 2013 and their owners don’t even spend any money. At least the Brewers spend money. 6 times in 44 years would be frustrating.

6 times in 44 years is INCREDIBLY frustrating.

Interesting the teams that you mention...
- The Reds are 25th in the MLB in team salary. Candelario and Martinez are the big salaries.
- Cleveland is 24th. Their team salary is only $2M higher than the Reds this year. Ramirez and Bieber are their big salaries.
- Milwaukee is 23rd. Their team salary is only $9M higher than the Reds this year. Yelich, Adames and Hoskins are their big salaries.

So in addition to having cheapskate ownership, the Reds front office has been, and remains, totally incompetent. Other than the Hunter Greene extension, all the money spent is spent poorly. Cleveland and Milwaukee deserve a ton of credit for being well run organizations, in spite of their penny pinching owners. When they spend, they spend wisely.

Krall and everyone in the Reds front office should be out of work. But the owners just don't care, obviously.

Yeah, if the Reds owners want to pinch pennies they should hire someone from the Guardians, Rays or Brewers who have experience and success operating under cheap ownership.

That even supports my claim better. This is a completely different organization.

This is even better. This is a rebuild!!!

Did you know that out of the top 20 teams in baseball payroll wise, only 9 are playoff teams?

Just because you spend money does not guarantee winning.

I'm sure your post is wrong, because, well, you posted it. Only 2 teams are in the playoffs as of today. Brewers and Yankees.

But no one said winning was guaranteed. You missed the point of my post this morning. Cleveland and Milwaukee have very nearly the same team salary total as the Reds. The Reds front office is incompetent. That is what my post said.

Well there is alot of front offices that are incompetent. The team the Reds are playing today, the Atlanta Braves, by most of you guys thinking, they should clean house. $236 million and they may not make the playoffs. Incompetent fools, right? 😂

They won the World Series in 2021 and are in the playoffs every year. I believe they’ve won several NL East titles in a row.

The Reds’ front office has done jack sh**.

The Reds, White Sox and Angels consistently have the worst decision making in the sport.

Baseball is truly a funny game. Blake Dunn, who's struggled miserably all season with the Reds, was 2 for 21 coming into today, is 2 for 2 off Chris Sale, a 17-3 record and Cy Young candidate this season. Dunn's first major league home run.

Check their record. Recent World Series win, playoffs almost every year. Slammed by injuries this year (Acuna, Strider, Albies, etc, etc.) Only a dope would blame their front office.

Reds on the other hand, 6 playoff appearances in 44 years. No player depth in the organization. Incompetent for sure. Why do you defend them? Don't you care about winning?

I don’t believe in being frustrated by something I cannot control. 14red blaming this season on youth and injuries shows precisely how far the Reds are from being an annual contender. The Brewers lost their two top SP to free agency and injury and still win the division going away. Not to mention a 65 yr old first time manager.
The front office will never invest in the type of players to make a difference. We can all just dream.

He’s just happy they field a team. Castellinis’ wet dream of what a fan should be.

After that 15-3 thumping the Reds season long +/- is now down to +5. You may recall at one point the Reds were very much in the positive territory despite being under .500. They are in the process of getting that +/- back to negative territory where it belongs for a team under .500. They remain the only team under .500 with a positive +/-.

Interestingly, the Cards are the only team above .500 with a negative +/-, they are somehow -57 yet they are 1 game over .500

But it’s year 11 of the rebuild so that’s not bad at all in fact it’s a good thing it’s barely above 0 this late into the season in year 11 of a rebuild! - 14Red, probably
