Stark County Player of the Year

With the softball season mid way thru the season, who appears to standout amongst her peers?

Looking at the stats in the Canton Repsository, North Canton Hoover Alex Marcantonio leads most of these. With Hoover in contention for the league title, she has my vote thru this part of the season.

Alex for sure. She hit a homer today for Hoover. She has single-handedly been their offense a few times this year and is a true leader on and off the field.

Bittinger girl from EC should be in the running. Great pitching and batting.
I would agree. This girl is the best pitcher in the county. She also is one of the top hitters. tops in RBI, stolen bases and slugging percentage. RYLINSY21, To leave this girl out of consideration would only mean that you must not have any brians

I think there are girls at Perry, North Canton, Fairless, & Louisville that may disagree with this comment. Competition may be a little bit of a factor. No disrespect intended!

Excuse me but I have no idea of who Bittinger is, yet alone know anything about East Canton. To make a comment about not having any brains (which by the way you misspelled) is uncalled for. Being a avid Hoover fan & parent who's daughter played on 2 State championship teams 2006 & 2008 respectively I was voicing my opinion on a subject that I do have quite a bit of knowledge about. Alex Marcantonio is a class act both on & off the field. Her numbers speak for themselves.

rylins21 - don't give us Hoover fans a bad name. You can't claim to be an expert on the subject and then not even have heard of one of the best pitchers in the county. You may be a Hoover expert but we're talking about Stark County Player of the Year and not just North Canton player of the year.

I also think Alex is clearly the class of the county and will win the award, but let's not act like she is the only player in the county with a chance.

I'm not saying Marcantonio is not deserving, just thought there might be some conversation rather than a foregone conclusion. Bittinger is a top-rate pitcher and hitter every single game.

Gurusome: Flanigan is having a good year, but she can be better.

There's a difference between being "on the list" and being THE choice for POY. The Louisville and EC kids obviously deserve mention along with a number of other kids.

There is a "boat load" of girls that play in the Fed that would tear up those other leagues and have huge numbers both hitting and pitching.

Bottom line is the stats are all relative to the level of competition you're playing.

Coaching against her for four years, She is not only a phenom but elevates the level of play of her team. You never know but she is for sure a front-runner.

Hint: Before you go off on someone, make sure you're going off on the right person. ;)

GoBlue7 didn't make that "brians" comment. Jovs did.

Sorry GoBlue7---Was directed at Jovs--every fan /parent has an opinion.Haven't posted anything on this site for the same reasons that I haven't posted on OFC. Good luck to all the girls no matter what school or division who have played their hearts out & are deserving to being mentioned to be in the running for player of the year.

I am not an expert nor did I say I was one. Stated that I had knowledge of the game. Would love to see the best of the best county teams play each other. Good luck to all the girls no matter what school or division who have played their hearts out this season. I hope in your eyes I'm not giving Hoover fans a bad name-just being honest, voicing my opinion that's all.

Bittinger has 215 strikeouts in 114 innings plus is a great hitter. That at least has to put her on the very short list with Marcantonio.

So who does she play against? Does she play against the federal league teams?? East Canton is D4? Thats a lot of strikeouts, and its a great job, but what is your schedule.

one reason it is hard to make a judge of player of the year is just that. there are so many different divisions playing. a DI player playing against DII and DIII could have great stats.

It might be misleading. But just because someone is playing DIV, does that mean they can't be player of the year? Maybe they are playing all DII and DIII teams and the stats are right up there with or ahead of other DI teams playing the same DII and DIII teams?

What makes the player of the year? Stats only? Is it also the success of the team? An example would be Glenoak, notthe best team, but maybe a player on that team has good stats? Or maybe the opposite? If there is no one in the lineup to protect them, maybe the kid gets walked or pitched around all the time?

In other words if she hasn't played against the Fed, she doesn't deserve recognition. I'd actually like to see what she would do against Perry or NC. The EC team certainly doesn't have the depth of teams in the Fed, and the Fed IMO is the toughest league in the state.

Is the award biased toward 'big schools' or should it be based in relation to the size of the schools?

Again, Bittinger isn't just a great pitcher, she's also a great hitter and fielder and leader. That should count for a lot.

And again, I'm just throwing her into the fray to have someone else to consider besides Marcantonio - if anyone should be a contender besides Marcantonio, it's her IMO.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe EC split a DH with Tusky Central, who is ranked above them in the state in DIV, and Bittinger pitched very well.

Not necessarily playing against the Fed, but playing consistently against D1 competition and excelling!

Not saying she isn't an outstanding player, but Marcantonio is doing it against tougher competition.

So the question again - What is the criteria for naming the Stark Co. Player of the Year, by those awarding the 'prize'?

While Stark County is filled with talented players, Marcantonio and Bittinger are representing themselves well for consideration.

east canton is still in it. and bittinger hits a 2 run hr......

don't count her out for player of the year.

True enough... pitching and hitting her team to the state tournament sure should garner a number of votes

Not trying to downplay anything Bittinger has done.

Some teams do not get to go as far in the tournament as others do.

For example, Lebron James was the MVP and the Cavs are already done for the season.

I think we might have something similar.

Marcantonio is the hands down "Player of the Year". She is the leader in most of the stats posted weekly in the Repository and plays the tougher D1 competition.

Bittinger is definitely outstanding in her own manner.

Like the NBA voting Lebron the MVP after the regular season, I think we would have to follow a similar path with Marcantonio.

I think even Ice Dad would agree..:)!
