Stark County Player of the Year

No, it's just some on-going tiff/pettiness between those two from last year's jackson-hoover battles

She won't win, and isn't even the best player on her team, but Ashley Hall's 19-1 record was pretty impressive this year for Hoover. She should certainly be at the top of the list next year...

Bittinger is good and good pitching is good pitching...but....D4 is still d4. I'd liek to see her shut down Perry, Boardman, Hoover, Jackson all twice each over the season.

mje, while I agree that there is a difference, I don't think that it's as big as you think. Just as an example, Poland's pitcher (d-3) has in fact shut down some very good bigger division teams, Greenville played with D-1 programs, etc.

This reminds me of a similar situation.

Mount Union is a perennial national champion in NCAA D3 Football.

Their best players are outstanding, but do not compete against the day in and day out competition a D1 player does for the player of the year in D1 "The Heisman Trophy".

If there was a Stark county player of the year for each division, then Bittinger is in hands down.

If there is only one for all divisions, then Marcantonio is the winner.

I'm still of the opinion it should be regardless of division; still haven't heard the 'official' criteria from those presenting such awards. And I'd like to see Bittinger pitch vs some Fed teams also. Maybe there should be an All Star game of Stark Co. teams.

You made my point. Greenville is perhaps the best D2 team in the state, and they lost to Hoover. Just like East Canton would. I know Hoover lost to Walsh but they were a very different team early in the season. The point is a school with 900 girls to choose from is more than likely going to have more talent than schools with 150. And the level of competion that federal league teams play versus East Canton's schedule isn't even comparable.

These so called awards are all bogus. It's all in who knows who and who gets the loyalty votes. For example, in the PAC, Fairless' pitcher Brittany Larch went 10-0 with something like a .56 ERA and batted over 500 against the league. Her team went 13-1 in the league losing thier last game of league play pitching a freshman due to Larch throwing something like 320 pitches the previous two nights at districts. One would think she would get MVP of the league, right? No, this award was given to the young lady from Tuslaw that got hurt midway through the year. Now nothing against this young lady and congrats to her, but how can you put up the numbers like Larch and get snubbed.

Now for Stark County Player of the Year I would like to throw Larch's name in there. She went toe to toe with some of the counties big names(Hoover, Perry, Jackson, Glenoak), yet her name is not mentioned anywhere in this thread. Her only bad game against the big schools was early in the year at Hoover. The other three games were all one run games usually decided because of a fielding error behind her somewhere. Oh, and she also pitched her team to the regional final game in DII at akron.

Did Garcon win the Heisman Trophy as the best college player?

This is the point trying to be made.

Bittinger is outstanding, but does not face the D1 competition day in and day out that Marcantonio has.

I think her selection as Federal League Player of the year and D1 1st team all State backs up her choice.

Apples to oranges CC... the difference between D-I and D-III in college athletics is HUGE. The difference between D-I and D-III in high school softball while it exists is small at best. The players can't control who they play/what division their school is. The award should go to the kid who had the biggest impact on their team's season. Any of the kids mentioned would have been a great choice.

Who exactly gives out this "award" anyways?
I don't seem to recall it in years past...

As MC said, all the mentioned girls are wonderful players and would be very deserving of any award.

I wonder if mje and ccrunner would be arguing so vehemently for Alex if she played for, hmmm, let's say Jackson? ;)

I wouldn't be "arguing" as much probably but the arguement is still the same. Of course I am biased toward Hoover but there is a reason why no one from a MAC school will ever win the Heisman despite how great their stats are - it's level of competition. East Canton doesn't play the calibur of teams Hoover, Perry, Boardman, Jackson, etc play. Putting up great numbers against bad teams isn't nearly as impressive as putting up similar numbers against great teams.

Let's stop saying everyone deserves the award. It goes to the best player in the county. That player is clearly Alex Marcantonio.

Alright MJE, testing your bias here... who was clearly the best player in the county last year?

Alex. :) The year before that Jessica Simpson. And the year before that. And the year before that. How's that for biased?

lol are you serious you have a few standouts in the smaller divisions but the depth is not even close, maybe in bowling but that is it

by the way any thoughts of any of the panthers who by the way are representing stark county pretty well right now

Said it weeks ago... will say it again. Can't have this conversation without mentioning Cassie Rohr. Her arm has carried Perry to where they are.

Not saying she is more worthy that Alex Marcantonio (Alex gets my vote) but, if you want to throw any pitchers in the mix, she definitely deserves to be in the conversation. She was tops in the FL this year.

Ok Mudcat - - lets throw out some numbers.

Ashley Hall was 19-1.
A 9 inning shutout against Jackson.
A no hitter against Garfield.
A one hitter against Glen Oak.
A two hitter against Massillon.
A nine inning shutout against Jackson.
9 shutouts.
1-1 record against Perry.

Cassie Rohr may be as good - but hard to be better than those numbers...
How she wasn't first team is beyond belief.

Let's just make it easier in the future

(Just to make mje and ccrunner happy)

*Only Hoover players can be considered for any award.

*The entire All Federal League team must be made up of Hoover players.

*No one can even consider that any other player from any other team, be it DI, DII, DIII, or DIV, could be as deserving as Hoover players.

*Anyone who disagrees with mje or ccrunner will be tarred and feathered since they are obviously right.

That should about cover it

Buckeye,

I think your showing your jealousy here.

Hoover has had a run on MVP's and outstanding teams for several years now.

With that brings the recognition for their top players.

I mentioned yesterday that Wright from Jackson had my vote as co-mvp last year.

Is there more than one pitcher on first team? I haven't seen these lists either (like many). If Dido made it, then it's a case of 'been there before' plus a great end to the year when she finally did get to throw again.

Here are some of Rohr's numbers from the Rep today:

22-2 record
0.77 ERA
198 strikeouts in 154 2/3 innings
only 31 walks
Shut out Green and Hoover in district semi and final

I'm sure Perry fans can add on to that, but it seems to me that she's very deserving of her placement even without the fact that she and her team are playing this weekend.
