St. Xavier Football 2021

I saw in another thread that X is broadcasting the game on Boxcast. I see the JV game listed at 12 but no link for the varsity. Anyone have more direct knowledge of this is happening?

I absolutely love that X is hosting Trinity KY and Eagle's Landing GA. Coach Specht recognizes the advantages of playing quality, out of state competition. Can't wait for those games!

Anyone know much about Manny Keeling at CB? Looks like he picked up an offer from Hanover?

Curious as to where Nolan has been lining up so far this year.
How can you have an “offer” at a Division III school? They are not allowed to offer athletic scholarships.

Likely see the top player's in tomorrow's 2pm scrimmage vs. Massillon.

Offense (17): McCaughey, Kellom, Klare, Vrsansky, Eary, Wassler, Houston, McFarlin, Napier, Sharp, Collins, Parker, Koch, Fogler, Fleetwood, Uhl, Rohmiller

Defense (15): Kemper, Nolan, Bareswilt, Devine, Kirk, Anderson, Bonner, Keeling, Lyons, Reilly, Buerkle, Dollenmeyer, Cummings, Adams and Trimble

Anyone missing?

Haven't seen the Tigers since the 2005 state finals (only time these 2 teams have played)

Houston plays on defense. Keep an eye out for Farrar (#17) at WR. He has looked pretty good in some of the 7v7's I would expect to see Nolan at WR and QB as well as DB and of course LS. Kemper at WR as well.

Adams is playing on Offense this year, look for him to get reps at RG. Ted Hammond (So #47?) may get some reps at DE as well. Andrew Monzel at LB (Sr #41).

Go Bombers!

Massillon Scrimmage stopped about quarter of the way in because temperature on turf exceeded temperature limits set my OHSAA

long way to bus for Massillon for 20 snaps

X doesn't have to worry about LW seeing too much

Any chance the Tigers stick around to scrimmage tonight under the lights?

Roster is up on the GCL website (missing a lot of ht/wt)

Back in the Buckeye State: ESPN's Kirk Herbstreit living again in Ohio for youngest son's high school

Forever a student of the game, ESPN’s College GameDay institution Kirk Herbstreit has been keeping his eye on Cincinnati St. Xavier High School head coach Steve Specht's squads and the passing offense of coordinator Andrew Coverdale..............

Last edited:
Is he living with family members in town? I was wondering how that situation worked out? I know he has kids that are in college. Did Kirk get an appt here in Cincy?
Sounds like the family is renting a house in the Cinci area while still maintaining residence in Nashville. His one son transfered from Clemson to OSU so he is closer to Columbus and Cinci by being in Ohio.

Looking like Uhl at Center, Parker at RT, and Adams at RG tonight, no Koch. Didn't miss a beat on that first drive, some serious bulk.

I like it....more balanced.....270-285-212-270-270.
Also some serious bulk on the sidelines: Koch 6'2" 255lb Sr., Rob Fogler 6'7" 308lb Jr., JJ Dollenmeyer 6'3" 269lb Jr.

How does this look for next season OLine...

LT #66 Robert Fogler Sr. 6'7" 308lb
LG #66 Evan Fleetwood Sr. 6’3” 280lb
C #60 Joe Dollenmeyer Sr. 6’3” 270lb
RG #79 Braylon Adams Sr. 6'1" 285lb
RT #70 Drake Ross Sr. 6’3” 286lb / Jackson Kattus So.

Looked like Koch was not dressed bit on the sideline. Hopefully not a serious injury, though Adams filled in very capably, and good to get some experience for him with the first team.

That line for next year could be massive. Relatively inexperienced, unless this trend of blowouts continues, but absolutely massive.

Heck since another blowout is scheduled for this Friday, let's look at the rest of next year's offense

2022 Bomber Offense
QB #12 Kyle Tressler Sr. 6'0" 177lb / #9 Kyle Fitzgerald Sr. 6'3” 190lb / Jack O’Malley Jr. / Ben Soloria So. / Chase Herbstreit So. / Michael McColgan So.
RB #40 Steve Napier Jr. 5’10” 190lb / Gage Patrick Jr. / Tre Dean Jr. / #22 Tyler Rivers Sr. 5’8” 143lb / PJ Roberson So. / Lucas Bishop So.
TE #88 Joey Wassler Sr. 6’4” 200lb / #89 Frank Scheurmann 6’3” 193lb / #48 Doran Mason Sr. 6’2” 195lb / Luke Klare Jr. / Jackson Kattus So. / Jake Wassler So.
WR #82 Jamal Sharp Sr. 5'8” 159lb / Magnus Violet So. / Hayden Shamsi So.
WR #80 Tyler Nicholson Sr. 5’9” 167lb / Jack McClatchey Jr. / Christian Parker-Rowe So.
Slot Receiver #19 Robert Houston Sr. 5'10" 165lb
PK #6 Liam Miller Sr. 5’11” 164lb

Coach T's off season regimen will add 20lbs of muscle to an already massive OLine.

Establishing a starting QB early will be key. Recall the 2018 season (pre-Coverdale) when X had not decided between Hudepohl and Kreimer and it haunted them all season. Next year's seniors, Tressler and Fitzgerald, have been splitting varsity 2nd halves, O'Malley has looked solid this year on JV and Soloria and Herbstreit have been splitting halves on the frosh level. Will be interesting to see how these 5 QBs develop and trust Coverdale to find his guy early.

At RB Napier has 21 varsity carries thus far and gets Saturday morning JV carries along with Patrick and Dean.

As usual Coverdale will have an excess of D1 talent at the TE position with Wassler, Kattus and Klare (Luke).

Robert Houston could be the next prolific Bomber WR as he's shown breakaway speed this varsity season with a 48 yard pick up on a 1st quarter jet sweep vs Penn and a 68 yard 3rd quarter kickoff return vs Colerain.

With the pending 2nd half turbo-clock game this coming Friday not worth discussing, let's look at the 2022 defense.

2022 Bomber Defense
LE #98 Antony Morris Sr. 6’2” 257lb / #91 Evan Hoynes Sr. 6’1” 230lb / Justin Kattus Jr. / AJ Saunders So. / Ben Boerger
NG #97 Ted Hammond Jr. 6'5” 250lb / #93 Micah Holder Sr. 5’9” 250lb / Nate Brice Jr. / Elijah Dubois So.
RE #44 Dijon Harris Sr. 6'1” 225lb / #53 Isaiah Jackson 6’1” 220lb / Will Batton Jr. / Gordy Sulfsted So. / Ben Lehman So.
OLB (Will) Noah Beck Jr. / #44 Gavin Hang Sr. 5’9” 175lb
ILB (Sam) #14 Pete Rose III Sr 6’0” 200lb / AJ Golden Jr. / Matt Schulte So.
OLB (Jet) #7 Max Bonner Jr. 6’2” 208lb / AJ Seibel Jr. / Zach Hertzman So.
FS #50 Stephan Jackson Sr. 5’10” 170lb / Ty Wiesman Jr. / Shane Strayhorn So.
Adj #30 Alex Devine Sr. 5'11" 190lb / Ty Stegbauer Jr. / Caron Seymour So.
SS Gus Folke Jr. 6'0" 180lb / Joshua Dennis Jr.
CB Cole Harris Jr. / Breylin Horton So.
CB Mason Hall Jr. / Caleb Dennis Jr.
P #96 Mathias Clark Sr. 6’3” 180lb

Commentary: The front 6 will be the strength of next years defense. Plenty of size on the line with an experienced NG. Bonner, the team's leading tackler this season returns at LB and will likely be joined by Rose, Beck (JV leading tackler) Alex Devine and Gus Folke are the likely safeties while the corners are uncertain. The kicking tandem of Rohmiller and Klare will be tough to replace but Miller and Clark will give it a shot.

Michael McColgan has actually been tearing it up on the freshman squad at QB. He's outshined the other 2 and is an all around better athlete. Also Macen Hall should be in the mix for one of the CB spots, and Ty Wiseman should also be in the mix for the secondary. Either way X shouldn't experience any drop-off in talent for the foreseeable future.

Coach T is the key for all of them. Get on the grind in the weight room in the off season and good things tend to happen.

St X almost never has a drop off in talent. There are certainly some exceptionally talented teams, like '07 but overall St X simply reloads. Usually the differentiator in an excellent team and an average team comes down to QB play. The last few years have had excellent QB play (along with a great offensive coordinaor) and great success. The '18 team had a lot of talent on both sides of the ball but a QB who turned it over a couple of times a game betwen fumbles and INT's. The state title team of 2016 was 5-5 but ultimately won the state title on the back of Sean Cliffords hot play throughout the playoffs.

As for freshmen performance my 25 years of following St X football says don't put too much stock in freshmen performance correlating to success at the varsity level. I find there is still a big disparity in size and strength at the freshmen level which often evens out by the time players are juniors and seniors. Sometimes a stud freshmen is a second string player by varsity while a guy who didn't see the field is not a starter. I am not implying that the best players as freshmen are not the best players as seniors, however you would be surprised at how often the freshmen success does not always transfer over to the varsity.

Which freshman QB played the 1st half against Lakota West? That guy is a true dual threat QB

Keeping Uhl at center, Koch back in at right guard and Parker at right tackle. Left side Collins and Fleetwood.

McColgan is a special talent, likely a 3 year varsity starter, possibly at the QB position.

The first few games he played receiver full-time but has split QB duties with Soloria the past couple games.
He's elusive and quick on his feet and accurate with his arm.

Last Wednesday, X trailed Moe 7-0 at the half when he switched from WR to QB and directed 2 scoring drives.
At 14-13 with just seconds remaining he hit the receiver for the 2 pt conversion and win.

The QB competition will be crowded headed into next season with seniors Kyle Tressler and Kyle Fitzgerald, junior Jack O’Malley and sophomores Ben Soloria, Chase Herbstreit and McColgan.

Several players enter their freshman year at StX having been the starting QB on their grade school team.

The one's who don't win the starting role on varsity are usually transitioned to another position.

Consider this year's team who have 3 former QB's in varsity starting roles: Brennan Bareswilt at safety, Ryan Nolan at corner and Max Klare at tight end.

In the recent past Liam Clifford was moved to WR his sophomore year, Drew Britt was moved to safety his junior year and Wiles Dolle was moved to corner his junior year.
