Playoffs thread

Celtics live to game 5.

If I'm them, I'm having some serious doubts about Jaylen Brown and carrying him as max contract tandem with Tatum going forward. Brown has not been good this series, and has regressed in scoring and efficiency as the playoffs have progressed: 27 ppg in round 1 against the Hawks, 23 ppg against the Sixers, and a measly 17 ppg on less than 40% shooting from the field this series. Going into a contract year and will command a massive payday next summer.
Celtics are in a tough spot. Brown may not be their guy, but he'll have someone give him max money. Sixers were in the same spot with Tobias Harris years ago. Good enough to command a high salary but maybe not an overall difference maker. So what do you do? Brown is a guy that can carry you in stretches, and he does defend fairly well. Honestly, I'd think about taking him over Tatum. I like Tatum, but very inconsistent and just not a leader.

Celtics ready to be the first to win a series down 3-0? Looks like they figured something out in game 4.
If they are able to win Game 6, which will be tough IMO, the odds swing heavily their direction to win Game 7 and complete a monumental comeback.

To quote Joe Tait way back in 1981 when Boston played at Philly in game 6 after trailing 3-1 in the series and winning game 5 at home "If the Celtics win tonight they will win it all." He was correct on that one. I don't know if they can win tonight but if they do it could well be a repeat. We shall soon see.

Probably long past due, but IMO tonight will be the night a team completes a series comeback from a 3-0 deficit. The Celtics are more talented than the Heat, they have the momentum in the series, and they are in Boston for game 7. I'd be shocked if Miami wins tonight.

Regardless of what happens in the finals, there is little doubt Spoelstra is the best coach in the NBA today. If the Heat wins the championship it would be fair to put him somewhere in the top ten of the best ever to do it.

Both you and I (and most of America) is shocked. Miami went right after a Celtic team that simply collapsed tonight. It is bewildering to me how up and down the Celtics are.
Is it time the NBA starts looking more at "glue" guys instead of picking out stars before they are stars? Jayson Tatum is a very good player, but he seems to be one of those guys who's great when times are good, and fades when it gets tough. Jalen Brown? Where was he at tonight? Marcus Smart?
Now it's going to be easy to count out the Heat in the finals against the much more talented Nuggets, but it just seems like the Heat may be on one of these "team of destiny" moments.

Anyone watch last night???

Sadly, the watching public has been TV brainwashed over time that only certain teams are promoted, and when we get a finals where it's two teams that don't get alot of promotion from the national networks, few watch. Now the die hard fans will watch, and we know of Jokic, and Jamal Murray, Jimmy Butler and Bam, but outside of that, there are few sports fans that can even name who's who. The Miami Heat need to be lifted up to a different level for pro basketball franchises. Pat Riley, who really was Laker basketball as a player and then coach, won there but has kind of quietly moved to Miami and built a really good franchise, and Greg Spoelstra may be the best coach in all sports you've never heard of. These guys just grind, don't seek attention and it's very refreshing.

No major suprises last night. I thought Miam's defense would be able to slow down Murray but it kind of looked like business as usual for the Nuggets. Their front line is just alot to contend with. And very un-NBA like, the Nuggets just exposed Miami's lack of size by posting Aaron Gordon. Bam was pulled away from the hoop by point center Jokic and that just set the stage for the Nuggets. Heat are going to have to go bigger to have any chance in this series.

Joker had double digit assists in the first half. His passing and playmaking as a stretch center are a nightmare to defend with some of the other pieces that team has.

Nuggets in a sweep.
This lasted all of one game. Nuggets are a strange team, they look like they can be really good at times, but Porter and Gordon can be very up and down and it really makes Jokic and Murry have to be great every game. Miami's just gritty and digs down and makes you earn every single point.

LOL - You are right, I've never heard of him.

Erik Spoelstra is a great coach for the Heat, everyone has heard of him if they follow the NBA even a little. He's been there almost 15 years and coached the LeBron/DWade championship teams...

Rubber hitting the road tonight. Going back to the ECF Miami has lost 5 of their last 7 games, including 3 in a row at home. Down 2-1 in the series...this is a must win game at home for them. With how negative their momentum has been, it seems far more likely they'd get closed out in Denver in game 5 as opposed to extending the series.

How many times have we written the obit for the Heat, just in the last month? Look, they are playing with house money. They are an 8 seed, They were not even supposed to get to the 2nd round, let alone the eastern conference finals or finals. So who knows? The Nuggets have had a tendency to slack off and not go for the kill. I wouldn't be shocked if the Heat grind out a win somehow tonight.

First time since the 70s a WC team won that is not located in TX or CA.
A couple years ago I posted that for the first time in decades elite talent was spread around the league and there were no super teams, which I felt would open a great era for the NBA with stars and teams winning big in places we aren’t used to seeing. It’s happening. I think it’s good, but the last time we really had that dynamic in the NBA was probably the mid 1970s to the rise of Bird and Magic. That half decade in the NBA was wide open, but is historically not regarded as a good time for the NBA, which even had playoff games on tape delay. Could the current NBA actually lose popularity even though more teams have realistic championship hopes and more cities have star players than probably since that pre-Bird/Magic window?

I think there are possibly two bigger issues at play for the NBA’s home grown popularity: the lack of American stars. Argument could be made the 4 best players are foreign and that more than half of the current top 10 is foreign. In addition: the next, young crop of superstars are closer to being out of the league than they are the face of the league. If Zion can’t stop eating and banging pornstars long enough to finally get healthy or if Ja can’t learn to put the pistol down, the league’s popularity takes a big hit. While neither IMO have top 3 player in the league potential they are exciting ultra athletic players.
